Harper was hot. She had been working for hours, pulling up and carrying the zucchinis. Her denim issued prison uniform was stuck to her, soaked in sweat during the first hour of her toil. After two or more hours, she felt like she was coated in salty, oily slime. Harper had many more hours to go. The guard was as comfortable as she could be, sipping her ice cold, refreshing lemonade in the shade of her umbrella, where in the shade it was one hundred degrees. Harper and her chain mates suffered under the hot and broiling sun, feeling their skin crisp up. They were not allowed sunscreen, deodorant or lotion, not even any aloe, nothing to protect their delicate flesh from the violent UV rays. Water breaks were often but it was impossible to drink enough water during the hot work day. The air was sticky, hot, hard to breathe, and the women in the fields endured it, hour after hour. By the end of the day, ten hours later, Harper was so happy to be done with work, ready to go back to her hot cell, where she could lay down and relax. The sweaty and exhausted girl was very looking forward to her shower the next day, as they were permitted two showers a week during the summer. The guard in the shade had a different idea: “Harper! You were the laziest bitch in the bunch today... and I don't expect you to be any kind of that lazy tomorrow! I saw you, not moving at all... you were walking, without any sense of urgency, carrying those buckets of zucchini... and when you were digging, you're mind was out in space! I've never seen a lazier convict in my life! I watched all of these other bitches sweat and work their asses off all day long! So you, Harper Littleton, will be spending all of tonight in the sweatbox! It's too bad for you... really... it's going to be a hot night. You will miss out on shower day tomorrow as well. No shower for you until later in the week! And you will work you're ass off tomorrow when I let you out, like the rest of these women. I saw you wiping you're brow all day! Ain't no comforts of home here! If you want to spend tomorrow night in the sweatbox, keep being lazy! You will work!”
