Just open the main page. It's obvious enough what I mean. Screenshots, drawings that anyone who has never learnt to draw could do in one minute, photos of mountains, cosplay or stuffed animals, tons of stamps that say pointless things, motivational posters. I think there isn't much doubt that they are not art. Your gallery is another example.

>>Screenshots
This could be questionable. Screenshots can be used to show off combinations of wallpapers, desktop widgets, docks, etc. Even if the individual items were made by other people, combining them together gives a different result.
OTOH if the screenshot is just to show off a wallpaper only, then I can understand the pointlessness of it.
>>drawings that anyone who has never learnt to draw could do in one minute
So because it is bad, its not art or it shouldn't be on the website? I don't understand that logic. First not everyone was born with an ungodly amounts of artistic skill but they may still enjoy drawing. Also some deviants may actually be children or young adults.
>>photos of mountains
Is it specifically photos of mountains or photography in general? Neither one bothers me really. Also I think photography is a fine hobby and some people (not all) can produce amazing works with a camera.
>>cosplay
Cosplayers can put different amount of money and/or effort into their costumes. Sure some of them might just be store-bought but there are also others that are much more detailed or realistic (relatively speaking).
>>stuffed animals
If they are handmade by the person who submitted photos of it, I don't really see a problem. They took effort and time to create a perhaps unique stuffed animal.
>>tons of stamps that say pointless things, motivational posters
Ok I'll give you this one. However I hope you didn't comment on my stamp just for this...

Me or the person who disabled comments? Or both?

I have every much of a right to voice my displeasure of disabled comments as the person who chose to disable comments. Also if a person initially had comments enabled but then disabled them, then he/she must have been butthurt too, nah?
Anyways this is just a personal pet peeve of sorts. Everyone has things that bother them. Big deal.

Some disable comments because of spam bots. Β

Although I have seen some spam here on dA, it is not so severe (frequent) that I would consider disabling comments for just that reason.

I disable comment just so I don't waste my time repeating, explaining whats already explained, useless drama, not being insulted and I don't get harassed for my points of views. Seriously, I have better things to do that are productive.

Thinker1988 In reply to Fellmekke [2013-11-23 09:06:47 +0000 UTC]
Maybe the comments are not only a discussion between you and the viewers, but mostly between the viewers, or simply comments that don't require a reply, it'sΒ simple as that.

Fellmekke In reply to Thinker1988 [2013-11-23 10:33:04 +0000 UTC]
It's rude not to answer a comment. You should know that.

I always answer my comments. It would be rude not to.
π: 0 β©: 2
anonymous-bot In reply to Fellmekke [2013-07-27 19:58:40 +0000 UTC]
Also some people may choose to ignore comments simply due the volume of comments. Very popular deviants may get hundreds or thousands of comments.

I agree with that however I think disabling comments just to avoid replying to the bad ones is the wrong approach. Throwing the baby out with the bath water and all that...

True. I've seen many disabling comments to avoid, but I don't do this. People can always send me a note orgo on my profile like they did before.

The question is why don't the artists want to hear peoples views? And is disabling comments so much more preferable than just ignoring them?

I can understand there are circumstances where a person doesn't want comments, but when somebody is posting something with a message or view being put across then proceeds to disable comments it looks like they can't take dissident opinions. For example a stamp that expresses a political view or something and the comments are disabled.

Not everyone disables comments just to "hide" from criticism. I personally disable comments on my some of my pictures if I feel they are not important, if they are practice drawings, or if I have changed a style of a character or series and I do not want people commenting on it. Also, I really do not care if someone hides comments on their pictures, it's their choice, that's why this is the internet, where people can have some freedom (while I hate to say that because some the freedom is being abused).

anonymous-bot In reply to FlintENT [2012-08-21 02:11:15 +0000 UTC]
What does it matter if people comment on your old work? If for whatever reason you don't like your older work, then why not just remove it or put it into storage? Just disallowing comments doesn't seem that effective.
As for freedom, the freedom for people to disallow comments interferes with another's freedom to comment. Deciding which is more important is debatable, much like the debate between GPL and BSD-style open source licensing.

If they don't want to read the same comment over and over
or don't want their inbox full of comments
That they don't even reply to
That's their choice
You should respect their wishes

I posted a comment on a deviation.
When I went back to it a few hours later, I found that the comments were disabled. My comment was the last to be posted before this happened.
I don't think she liked what I said.

Controversial works are the most likely one to have disabled comments.
But what REALLY bothers me is when I agree with it, but can't tell them how great they are.
Before I got a DA account, I saw a work that was only viewable by members, but the comments on it suggested that it was great. After getting an account, I looked at it. It was stunning, and I was about to tell the person how great it was, only to find that sometime between my last visit(before getting my account) and that moment, the comments had been disabled! I considered giving this person a long rant about just how pissed off I was, but decided not to. I'm new to DA, and I don't want to make any bad impressions(For now).
