Thats what bothers me too: the times when I want to give a comment but cannot.

Yeah, but this person closed the comments section only HOURS before I arrived with my new account.

Don't feel bad. There's no way you could have predicted that.

I also hate disabled comments.

I thought people disabled comments because they don't want people raging or something. They want to share their art but aren't really interested in feedback.
Well this is the reason I give myself when I see a disabled comments on someone's art

If they don't want people raging maybe its because they cannot handle it. If they don't want feedback, then why?

I don't know, I just assume they don't want to have their inbox full of messages. The way I see it if people favorite your work they approve or like your work. Maybe not everyone wants to hear opinions or receive accolades. Though I would love to comment on their work I guess, some people don't care about what we have to say or they just posted the work for the heck of it. Or maybe they just have waaaaay too many messages and don't want anymore.
Sometimes I just want to ask them why but I figure they might get mad, so I just assume and continue on my merry way.

This! Thank you.
What is it with DD's that have disabled comments too? Why would you suggest an image that the artist doesn't really care for feedback?
If you don't want to have any conversations at all with your viewers... why are you on DA? That's what I want to ask them. Heck most of the reason I like DA is having conversations with people about thier art, my art or a common subject. It's this attitude that we watchers should be greatful that they dare grace us with their work and precense that I can't stand. (I'm not for the entitled viewer who thinks people should draw them free art either mind you) but I think this is the main problem with "mainstream" art. Hollywood, Marvel, DC all of them don't want to hear anything from fans, just give them the money and move on.
I'm not for trolling, or masking rude unhelpful remarks as "critiques" and I don't think artists should have to "deal with it" (which is why there is the ban button) but to tune out everybody? Why create anything at all? Much less show it off.

anonymous-bot In reply to UrbanBanshee [2011-10-18 02:38:47 +0000 UTC]
Well the DD is mostly to show off a particular work (i.e. getting views), so having comments disabled won't conflict with that goal.
I do agree why bother posting artwork if you will just avoid feedback. I mean sharing is nice and all (icons, themes, wallpaper, etc) but whats the true motive for disabling comments?

That's what I'm saying....some artists I watch who are EXCELLENT have their comments disabled.
You don't want me to tell you how pretty your picture is???

And its funny cause I actually wanted to see some of the comments, just to see the response. Originally some of them did enable the comments, but disabled them due to the "stupidity" as they call it.

I especially hate them when I find disabled comments on something that I actually agree with and I want to tell them how right they are.

M-Haynes-Productions In reply to ??? [2011-06-04 13:53:58 +0000 UTC]
I do agree somewhat, though it all depends on the reasons for wanting to disable them.
If there are a few trolling comments, then there's nothing stopping the artist from just hiding those instead of completely preventing everyone's ability to comment at all. Personally I like receiving feedback on my pictures so I rarely if ever disable them.

Afaik the only person who can disable/enable comments is the person who uploaded the deviation and maybe the dA admins (Idk maybe).

It's weird - disabled comments (unless it's all of them) don't bother me much, yet storaged deviations and deactivated accounts really irritate me.
Probably because I've just seen too damn many people whose stuff I liked pack up and leave. Really irritating when you forget to save something/forget where it is, and it's... gone.

anonymous-bot In reply to skateboarder11 [2011-02-21 17:04:21 +0000 UTC]
Maybe I should make a stamp for those
Storaged deviations wouldn't bother me so much, if I could at least know the name and artist. Then I could maybe Google for it!

skateboarder11 In reply to anonymous-bot [2011-06-11 18:36:40 +0000 UTC]
...Argh.
It's getting WORSE.
I wish that deactivated accounts... would just wipe any trace of the account from existence. Pain in the ass stumbling into a disabled account on nearly every fucking trip to the site. (By wipe any traces... nuke all comments, submissions, etc.)
...Hell, I even went so far as to hide comments from said people on my page. That's how sick I've gotten of it. :/

anonymous-bot In reply to skateboarder11 [2011-06-11 23:31:04 +0000 UTC]
Its strange, with deactivated accounts you get that one page but banned accounts you just see an empty profile with the message "This person has been banned from deviantART permanently." And both accounts will have the same "!" before their name so you can't tell the difference until you try accessing their page.

I really don't like when people post agressive things (either art or stamps) with agressive description.
But I totally hate when they also disable comments on those things - so I can't express my rage

anonymous-bot In reply to Dark-Scratcher [2011-02-04 19:44:45 +0000 UTC]
Yeah that seems to make it one-sided. If the comments would bother you so much then don't post it to begin with

people would always credit me even when i specifically say in the artist comment "if you like it go to [link] because i did not draw this" if i DID draw it, then i wouldnt disable comments

Noxipie In reply to ??? [2010-12-05 15:14:30 +0000 UTC]
being an art site... why program disabled comments when art is all about criticism and people who make controversial art made it for a reason, so disabling comments contidicts that.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
anonymous-bot In reply to Noxipie [2010-12-05 15:42:18 +0000 UTC]
I don't know if I would say art is all about criticism. I mean you can make art before even understanding what criticism is (children for example).
As for controversial art, I suppose some people just like adding fuel to the fire without the risk of being burned.

Besides, half, if not most of the fun comes from reading comments.
