Only disobedient slaves were hung by their wrists in public. Laurel had tried to flee from Targa's slave pens the previous night and was now paying the price. Suspended from her wrists made it impossible for her to flee just as surely as a collar and chain would, but it made her suffer sorely for the attempt. Even after just five ehn her arms and hands ached. She was glad that Targa would not risk damaging her by keeping her thus for a whole ahn. He still wished to sell her at a good price and would soon let her down.

Even suspended as she was though, she was still required to call out to be purchased when a free man or woman came by or face a flogging when let down. So when the warrior strode past she called out as the others did, begging to be bought, though with pain in her voice and an earnestness the others did no feel. If he bought her she would be let down sooner, to be inspected. To her chagrin, he disappeared down the street, barely giving her a glance. With bitterness Laurel vowed to stay in the slave pen from then on.
