Description When you step out of the parking lot at Zabriskie Point, you find yourself in a maze of absolutely barren and lifeless hills and ravines. The peak of Manly Beacon dominates this surreal place. This could well be somewhere on Mars.

Death Valley National Park.

Just out of curiosity, which lens did you use for this shot? It’s hard to get a sense of scale, so I’m not sure how close the foreground is.

It was moderate wide-angle Mamiya 45mm lens, which is equivalent to about 30mm in 35 mm format. There is a hiking trail visible in the distance, it can give you some sense of the scale.

Good to know. I have that one as well as the 35mm f/3.5, but I don’t get the chance to get out and do much landscape stuff.

Hauling Mamiya setup to landscape locations is not a trivial stuff! I wish I had that 35 mm lens, I often feel like I want more wide angle.

I know what you mean. I took an old 645-1000S on a hike along the coast of Newfoundland once. Got some great stuff, but man, was I tired afterwards.

Maybe it's just my digital back, but I find the 35mm gives me a great deal of vignetting at either end of the aperture spectrum. It seems to do best around f/8, which, on that lens, lets me hyperfocus starting at 6.5 feet if I put the focal plane at 13 feet.

That little road adds a very subtle bit of scale

Actually, it was your photo that triggered my spontaneous decision to go and see this place. I thought why not just go there? And I did! Thank you for your inspiration and support, Marianne!

I enjoyed it enormously! I wish the weather was more dynamic, the sky was too blue and empty all the time.
