Description So I was a bit bored and had these pictures laying around for ages so I though I would finally make a tutorial (a very basic little tutorial). It's my first one so don't be too hard on me! I'll try get a sculpting one up soon but not with this fellow, I've lost the inspiration to work on him

Any questions or suggestions, please do let me know!

I didn't finish that one, I kind of lost my way with it You do kind of have to make the armature a skinny version of what you want to end up with - it does take practice! Just stick with it

I apologize as this is an extremely late question, but may I ask what kind of wire you use? I want to make sure the wire/masking tape I plan on using won't burn in my oven D:

Thank you sooooooooooooo much for this tutorial!!!!!!! It is extremely helpful from such an inspiration like you!! I really look forward to trying this out (:

Oh, and one more question... I was told that when you bake it, it's possibly wise to wrap/bulk up the thinner pieces of the sculpture in more aluminum foil to ensure they don't crumble and crack.. Is this a wise decision?Β

Thank you so much again!!! (:

Hey! Sorry for the late answer! And no problem Always happy to help!

Umm I just use any old wire I can find really - aluminium, brass, steel. It's really not that easy to burn things at the temperature you should cook clay at. You can even go a bit lower and leave it in for longer.

I haven't had any problems with crumbling and cracking but I have seen many other artists who recommend doing this - so it can't hurt! You'll just have to experiment and see what works best for you.

Thank you for your lovely words, it means so much!

I love the paint job on your wolf's head - it looks really beautiful, you are very talented. And the sculpture of course is very good, I always wish I had the space/equipment to play around with ceramics

It is a time consuming art form!!! Good luck!!!

The last part is so clever Γ².Γ² I will definitely try!
Usually I make a the basic armature and then when I try to add clay I make a big mess with details... I bake the figure many time and gradually add details but it's still hard to sculpt small parts for me like eyes and paws' details! I'm still a beginner... Last Christmas I made a semi realistic baby bunny for a friend and I noticed that I'm improving, at least a little bit, also in colouring... But I still have much to learn XD Can't wait for next part

Wonderful! Good luck with it When you do compare, it is amazing how quickly you improve - just gotta keep at it!

Well I am glad someone finds it helpful! I'm not a fan of the armature stage of sculpting, I just want to dive right in. Unfortunately it is very important. Sigh.

Ah! That tip about the masking tape seems like a great idea! I always run into trouble with putting clay right on to the tin foil. Thanks for this!!

Hahaha, this is how I always think to make my sculpts but never do. XD I always take to friggin much wire, then I get tired of it not being okay in a spot and take it of. Basically I sculpt my pieces as they go, a little wire here and there, some tin foil and clay, and then some more wire and tin foil and dum di dum di dum. XDDD But Im such a "bored out of my wits person" to make things the same all the time so its nice for me not following a pattern. Also I couldnt since I never know what to sculpt before I begin (because planing is boring and if I do I end up not wanting to sculpt it XD) = I couldnt say if my creature would have 4 legs, 10 legs or no legs at all but a pair of wings instead, and a short neck could suddenly turn into a very long one etc, Β therefore I cant make a wire and tin foil skeleton.

Great tutorial though!!!

Im guessing the koi and unicorn hasnt arived. ;_______________;

Well that's just cos you're a natural and amazingly talented! Whatever works for you! I do agree that planning is boring and this is the worst stage of sculpting, really sucks! But I know that if I don't do this properly, nothing else will go well for me, unfortunately.

Hope you're OK Linda!

Escaron In reply to ApostacyArt [2014-03-25 22:49:10 +0000 UTC]

Nooooooo!!! Its because Im stupid and unpatient and therefore make sculptures that take double the time they could take if I only gritt my teeth and actually did plan beforehand! XD You wanna know how I put the wings on the Pidgeot sculpt? I KNEW I was making pidgeot but because it was boring I didnt make a wire skeleton for the wings noooooh, I screwed that and only made the body and sculpted on it, even the details an THEN I put in wire for the wings and had to glue them there, and then I used tape from the wingtips and built it into the clay on the back and build my clay wings onto the tape and after baked I had to cut lose the tape and continue sculpting. I had no clue the tape could take it in the oven or if the wings would fall apart BUT for some reason I love the thrill of making things that could fail. XDDD Talk about making it hard for me. Hahahhahahaha
But Id say you are totally doing it the right way! Ive had some sculpts fail misserably and Ive had to build them togheter again wich take even longer, so its really stupid. Also YOU are the amazingly talented here, not me!Β

Im all okay!!! Hope you are too! Β

Ha ha that's so funny Linda! I've done that a few times but never with such spectacular results! And that sounds like a good way to make wings anyway, I'm still scared of them lol.

I hate the sewing gods! I wish I could sew, but it's the one thing I just have absolutely no affinity for! It's just so bitty and you have to plan and prepare and blergh! Just not me.

But you just gotta stick with it! Your pine cone troll is going to look so adorable!!!
