Unhappy with the flash lighting, I also tried some shots without. But that means having to use a bigger aperture, which in turn means shallower depth of field, making it even more difficult to get the focus right. Had to crank up the ISO to 1600, on top of that. Some of these shots could have been good, but the eyes of the bugs were always slightly out of focus, which ruins the shot for me. This is the only one with decent focus.Cantharis Rustica, a species of the Soldier Beetle family. Looks menacing enough to deserve the name! The real thing is tiny, though, about 1.5 cm long.

The high ISO number creates a bit of grain, but it doesn't look too bad. Nice angle and composition. That lush green looks great.

Thanks! It can be so frustrating when you look at your shots later, only to find that the focus is a bit off... happened to me countless times, but somehow I still don't get bored of it. Hunting down the bugs is the best part, if the shots come out nice, that's just an added bonus, I think.

Yup. When you're looking at the little tiny screen on the digital camera, you can't really tell exactly how good the focus is. XP
I dont get bored of photography either; I've always been into it. But my interest in insects is relatively new just because I had a bug project. ^^ I hunt down bugs just for the heck of it too, but I rarely go outside my backyard just due to time purposes. But if I ever had the opportunity to go to China or Malaysia or the Amazon to hunt for bugs, I'd definitely go. LOL

Yes, most of my photos are ruined due to focus being a bit off.

The calm background makes the Cantharis' wild colors stand out.
