Description "Seems a little long, doesn't it?" Miko asked distractedly.
A little blunt, perhaps, but the friendship between Miko Nakadai and Lori Jiminez had never been based on mincing words and half truths.

"It's only the top part of the skirt," Lori grunted around a mouthful of pins. "There's going to be an underskirt, a layer of tulle, and then a slip."

Miko made a face and absent-mindedly took one of the pins Lori removed from the waistline of the dress and stuck it into her messy bun. "Why I let you talk me into tulle is beyond me," she complained.

"It's to fluff out the skirt. You're the one who said you didn't want a huge train on the gown, remember?" Lori stuck another pin in and reached for her pincushion.
She scowled upon realizing that it was mostly empty.

"Will you stop that?" she squawked, and popped upright to remove six straight pins from Miko's hair. "You're off-duty! You can stop hoarding everything that could conceivably be a weapon now."

Miko snorted dryly and traced her fingertips over a barely visible scar at the end of her right eyebrow. "Oh hon," she scoffed, "I'm a Wrecker. That doesn't ever stop."

A minute frown traced its way over Lori's lips for a moment, no doubt as she was remembering some of Major Nakadai's more dangerous missions over the last six years. But she huffed and returned to a semblance of a smile, even though Miko couldn't see her face at the moment.
"Jack doesn't hoard sharp weapons when he's off-duty," she said pointedly.

At the mention of her fiance, Miko's weary face broke into a broad smile. "Who, Captain Iacon? He is a weapon!"

"That's what they say about you, Nakadai."

There were only a handful of minutes left before Miko needed to return to her duties -- there was an unfortunate amount of paperwork to be filled out for a simple incident negotiating asylum on Earth for alien refugees. There hadn't even been an explosion this time! -- nevertheless, Miko rarely got a chance to spend one-on-one time with her former college roommate that wasn't directly related to work. The paperwork could wait just a little longer.

"Yeah?" she asked with a smirk, "Who says that?"

Lori finished pinning the skirt to the bodice and leaned back to examine her handiwork.
"All of Cyber Branch, really, but especially U.E.2 and U.E.4," she answered.

The U.E. teams were by far the only reason Unit E: Cyber Branch was keeping up with its sister division, the G.I. Joes in territory covered and disputes solved. The four teams had all been handpicked by Captain Darby and were involved in everything from espionage to extraterrestrial combat.
It was a diverse bunch.
They were also just a little bit wild, which was probably why Miko and Wheeljack liked them so much. "Stargate on caffeine", Raf had once called them. Which didn't do much for his "resident nerd" status.

"Buncha jokers, the lot of 'em," Miko said fondly. She stepped down from the footstool and let Lori help her out of the dress so that she could start sewing.
"You know those clowns were taking bets on how whether I'd be the one to propose first or Jack?"

"Oh that's what they were betting on!" Lori laughed. "Well, to be fair, the Autobots were making some kind of bet on you two too."

"Knew it!" Miko hissed, snapping her fingers. "Who was involved? I want names: they owe me credits."

I feel like Miko would pull that move from the Little Mermaid movie, throwing the pin through the air, and impaling a angel statue in the forehead XD

Captain Iacon. There were, Miko mused as she sifted through the paper work, downsides to your fiance being a symbol. Sure you got to bask in the reflected love (and hate) of the masses but a Wrecker was about the action not adulation. The increased attention, the betting pools on everything from your dating life to your future children's names they could be annoying but they didn't take random stabs at your heart. Miko sighed and pushed one completed form to the side. Captain Iacon she had called him. She wasn't sure when it had happened. At first Jack had been just another soldier (he still seemed to think he was). Just like Optimus. But at some point the young soldier had stepped out from the shadow of the Joes and people had noticed. People from several words. Few outside of their friends knew how deep the relationship had been between the Prime and Jack. But the mark Optimus had left on the boy ran deep and true and even if most Cybertronians didn't know where it originated from they could not help but see that Jack lived the ideals that Optimus had stood for. It didn't take long for Jack to become a hero, something larger than life. Miko couldn't be prouder of her fiance, but even a Wrecker wasn't happy to find a giant target painted on a loved ones back.Β

ArdentAspen In reply to Foxbear [2017-07-02 05:45:08 +0000 UTC]

Of course, it would hardly do to pretend that Jack didn't often worry about her in similar ways.
"Captain Iacon" (he was going to hunt down whoever gave R&D the okay to make him the Autobot insignia shield and either shake their hand or sock them in the jaw. He hadn't decided which yet) was a symbol on other worlds. Calm, clear-headed, a being you could trust with your children and yet at the same time a being you never, ever wanted to cross in battle.
Even on Cybertron the teasing he habitually received was flavored with undercurrents of respect (Or gruff and awkward affection in Director Magnus's case)

But on Earth, he was Captain Darby, the Man in Charge of the U.E. teams. Still a symbol, in a way, but one of authority and professionalism. It was exhausting.

Miko, on the other hand, was the Indefatigable Major Nakadai. The Angel of Na'Conda. The Hammer of Earth. She was brash and loud and charismatic and the recruits adored her. She made other worlds uneasy -- very uneasy-- but on Earth she was a hometown hero.

Perhaps because Earth did not understand the history of the Wreckers, nor the fact that Cyber Branch only sent Major Nakadai into a situation if things were going poorly and they needed the battle to end quickly.

Just as, Jack suspected, the other worlds he visited did not understand his tougher, drilling-the-new-recruits side. Or the fact that his commanding general was also his stepfather and had, in fact, seen enough of his embarrassing baby pictures to be able to talk him into most anything.

What was that old saying again? Something about prophets having no honor in their hometowns?

"Oh Jack dear."

Captain Darby flinched, sending his stylus skittering across the surface of his datapad. That tone, he had learned that tone over a decade ago. It never failed to manifest without some form of abject humiliation. He steeled his nerves and turned to face three grinning Wreckers. (Well he assumed Wheeljack was grinning. Facemask and all that.)Β
"It is good to have you back," Jack said cautiously as he eyed his fiance over for booby traps at the same time as he glanced about for random ninja bots and other sundry surprises.Β
"Oh it's good to be back," Bulkhead assured him from his position on Miko's right.Β
"Real good," Wheeljack said from her left. (oh yeah he was grinning under his mask.
"So how did the officer exchange go?" Jack asked, hoping desperately that he might keep this conversation professional.Β
"Oh it went great," Miko said waving her hand dismissively. "They are super eager to work with another organic species about their same level of tech development and they are willing to take the Cybertronians along with us."
"Yeah the formal negotiations went real well," Wheeljack said with a snigger. "So well in fact that we had time to do some after house cultural exchange."
Jack frowned. "How *are* the bars in that sector of space?" He asked dryly.Β
Bulkhead gasped dramatically and raised a hand to his spark. "You wound me! We went straight to the libraries!"Β
"Of you I believe that Bulkhead." Jack said.
"Seriously," Miko said with a giggle. She reached down to pull something out of her satchel. "I wanted to see what they had in the way of children's books, cuz you know they have that sort of thing-"
"Why children's books?" Jack asked, going over the missions parameters in his mind. They hadn't been looking into any general cultural issues...
Three sets of *seriously Jack?* looks locked onto him and he blushed as he grinned sheepishly at his fiance.Β
"Right, go on." He said.
"And we found this!" Miko held up a brightly colored book triumphantly.Β
Jack narrowed his eyes and walked forward to look at the red and blue themed cover. The styalized being on the front was from the wings clearly a member of the species Miko had been dealing with but the proportions were those of a human and there was no mistaking the round shield with the Autobot sigal in the center.Β
"Seriously?" Jack said, giving Miko a baleful glare.Β
Miko burst into laughter and Bulkhead joined her.Β
"Looks like you had all sorts of adventures you never told us about!" Wheeljack said gleefully. "And were seeing a pretty, winged alien girl as well you dog you!"
Jack goaned and flipped through the brightly colored pages until he came to an image of the hero of the story wooing a brilliant blue winged female.Β
"We are not showing this to our children." He said firmly.
"That's cool," Miko said gleefully. "I am sure there will be other by the time it comes to that."

Jack made a mental note to destroy the book, or at least put it in the gun safe so that none of his men -- or, Primus forbid, his stepfather -- could see it.
It occurred to him three hours later that Arcee knew the combination on his safe. And these days Arcee, Lori, and Miko made quite the terrifying Triad.

When he returned from briefings, giving reports, and a good hour in the gym, Jack found that the common room in the officer's section of the temporary base was occupied. Arcee sat in her customary place in the corner by the radiator, and Lilian sat in her customary spot on Arcee's lap. The seven year old "surprise baby" was thoroughly engrossed in the story Arcee was reading to her.
The story Jack had thought he'd locked securely away in his gun safe.

"Oh scrap no," he groaned. But the damage had been done. His partner delicately turned a page in the book, glanced up with an expression of fiendish glee, and continued to read to his half-sister.

"But the brave Captain Iacon was not afraid of energy weapons. He swooped down to face the evil Baron Silo and raised his mighty shield. 'With this shield I defend the innocent!' he cried," Arcee read, using a dramatic and very obviously Optimus-inspired voice, " 'The shield forged upon my father's world and tested by my mother's warriors; this is the shield that will end your senseless attacks!' And with that he stepped in front of La'ien'ka and caught the Baron's death-ray as easily as if it had been a concuss-ball."

"Whyyyyyy," Jack hissed under his breath. It was so dramatic, like something from an old superhero comic or one of the few animes Miko had convinced him to watch when they were teenagers. And what was that about a shield forged on his "father's world"? What father? Was he Kal-el now?

"Hey Jack, is this why Mom never talks about your dad?" Lilian piped up, half mischievous and half serious. "Because he's an alien?"

"Lil, I swear to the Allspark, you repeat this to anyoneΒ and I'll-"

"You'll what, Captain?" Arcee snorted, "Take her out for ice cream after school anymore? Yeah, we'll see how long that lasts. Now look, you made me lose my place. Where were we?"

Dramatically, Lil puffed out her chest and clenched a fist, booming, "This is the shield that will end your senseless attacks!"

"Nooooo," Jack put his head in his hands and resigned himself to unwanted infamy.

"So," Wheeljack said as they watched Jack pointedly ignoring Arcee as she read the outrageous tale to a rapt audience, "do we tell him about the Unit E special cultural appropriations request?"Β
Bulkhead snorted and took another swig of his energon. "If Fowler wants Jack to know about his big library of ballads, holos, and books on "Captain Iacon" he can tell him himself as far as I care."Β
"I wonder why he does collect those," Wheeljack mused idly.
"Well the official reason is to keep a servo on the pulse of the galaxy's opinion of the Cybertronian/Earth alliance," Bulkhead said. "Personally I think Fowler like to be able to pull out the safe ones to show June when she gets worried."Β
"Safe ones?" Wheeljack asked.Β
"Well the one the snake people of Argis made about him going down into the underworld to rescue the king and slay the Eggeater is a bit dark," Bulkhead said. "I don't think even Miko would like the images of him getting eaten and having to cut his way out of the Eggeater's belly. Not exactly YA friendly."Β
"Fair enough," Wheeljack said. "I might like it though. Did he actually get eaten on that mission?"
"Well he got those acid burns somewhere," Bulkhead said with a chuckle.Β

ArdentAspen In reply to Foxbear [2017-07-03 13:35:52 +0000 UTC]

"Yep."

Bulkhead suddenly realized that the subject of their conversation could, in fact, hear them.

Wheeljack had suspected all along.

"Miko gets something like sainthood on two planets and a monster movie about her on Kors'ira that she autographs for edgy alien teenagers and I am apparently a superhero. Worse things have happened. The Lithonians, for example, think that Raf is literally a gremlin."

"Because Wheeljack told them he was," Bulkhead pointed out.

"And I'm proud of that," the other Wrecker grinned. Then he blinked. "Hey how much of that did you hear, anyway?"

"I came in at the Argis discussion, thanks for the flashbacks," Jack rolled his eyes and made his way over to sit by Arcee and Lil.

"Told you," Bulkhead whispered.

"He has Wrecker potential, y'know? Not Miko level, nobody's got that, but not zero either," Wheeljack mused, optics dancing with unconcealed humor.

"You know that ain't his style," Bulkhead elbowed his friend.

"Yeah yeah, too much Optimus in him." Wheeljack grinned and shrugged. "Worth a shot though."

Across the room they could hear Jack sputtering indignantly about the book's ending -- presumably Captain Iacon flying off into the sunset with the alien girl -- and declaring that for safety and sanity purposes he needed to find out what the other books were like.

Bulkhead decided not to tell him about the one underground film made on Luna-1, where he was a Pretender, the secret minicon son of an Autobot. It was terribly made with a hilariously weird premise.
Jack would probably get as far as the part where the Autobot in question was Optimus Prime, and then he'd probably have a heart attack.
