What exactly is lens flare? I never understood what it is.

I think it is a light diffusion, it was created because of the light scatter in lens. So if you shoot something really bright with your camera lens, it will create an effect of light burst. That light burst is called lens flare. cmiiw
It is somehow necessary for composition to make the scene or picture look beautiful. Hope this helps
