Description
GASP! Thank you `znow-white for the DD!All my charcoal works can be found here: [link]
I've had a bunch of people ask me to make a tutorial on how I go about my charcoal works. So here's a write up of how I make them.
If you've still got questions or think something isn't clear enough, just let me know. I consider this a 1.0 version and I'm sure I'll hack into the file to edit it at some point. And please check for typos. I checked a bunch of times, but I'm sure I missed something here or there.
If you're interested, you can see the finished artwork here: [link]
All charcoal works in my gallery were made using this technique. I have anime fanarts, cartoon fanarts, game fanarts, animals, realistic portraits, and still lifes. I have pieces that use only charcoal and pieces that incorporate a lot of pastels as well.
The fullsized 1000 pixel wide version is on download. So click download if you want that version.

I know this has been out for a while, but I just wanted to thank you for this tutorial! I'm trying to teach myself how to draw and I just used charcoal for the first time today and I based the technique completely off of this. It helped a lot!

Um...this is cool and all but wouldn't it be easier just to start with black paper?

White charcoal on black paper results in a very different look. They're two distinct styles.

I just recently came across this tutorial as I was looking into learning different techniques I could apply to pastel & charcoal [I just bought a couple sets of pastels and had no clue how to approach them] and I have to say this is a wonderful tutorial especially for a beginner exploring their options with the medium.
Great job

Awesome!
I have a few color charcoal pencils, but mostly I use the dry pastels. They are very similar in consistency.

Thank you!
I've never tried this method with oil pastels (I only use dry pastels). If you try it, tell me if it works or not.

Haha, this reminds me of the charcoal tutorial I made, only for subtractive methods. XD Kinda like yours, but I explain things differently, and I think I talk about light sources.
I've forgotten, but I know it was a MONSTER of a tutorial, and you couldn't see the whole thing on dA, you had to download it! XD
Awesome work though, Tina. =3

More people need to use charcoal. It's not as scary as they think.
I actually used the shrink function for this one, it was so long. Something like 10000 pixels at fullsize, which is on download. I can get talky sometimes.

indubitanter In reply to AreteEirene [2008-09-25 14:47:11 +0000 UTC]
I know! Charcoal is so relaxing and fun when you really know how to use it. =3 I wish people would use it a lot more, I don't see it on here enough. XD
OH! XD I would've, if dA didn't have a problem with the file size. I know mine was over 10000. I think. I'd have to check now. XD

AreteEirene In reply to indubitanter [2008-09-26 16:57:36 +0000 UTC]
I think dA rejects anything over 20M, so you have to shrink it down to less, unless it's a print source file and then you can use FTP for a file up to 80M. I guess it's to keep people from posting outrageously huge stuff.

XDD Probably. I put it into PNG compression, so it's pretty big. I wonder if I saved it for web, it'll cut down the size? Ah well, won't be able to tell for a while, that's for sure. XD
Thanks, Tina.

You could try it as a jpeg. They're much smaller than pngs, even at the utter lowest setting for compression.
