Description
An illustration for a fic that was written as a gift for my dear friend HaganeNeko. The fic is by ibshafer and can be read on LJ at [link] .This derivative fan art is based on the work of Hiromu Arakawa and all rights are reserved to Fullmetal Alchemist (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi) © Hiromu Arakawa // Square/Enix.

Additional notes: Since putting up this piece, a lot has happened with it. First, it won first place in the FMABrotherhood group's FMA Day Contest ([link] ) and then it was chosen for the second volume of the dA Rangers Art Book Project ([link] ) - and it got a whole page to itself! - [link] What's even more amazing is that, when presented with the book at a convention in Hawaii, Vic Mignogna opened it up to this picture first! [link]
I couldn't be more pleased and it's all due to SpeedyAlchemist and the lovely folks over at the The-dA-Ranger-group.

Me too! It was my only disappointment with the series. And it would have been so easy to stick in there at the end. Oh, well, I guess that means we have to draw it.

Ooo! You noticed! Trust me to gravitate towards the art geek comments. LOL!
The trick is to create your outline using fills, not lines, that way they respond to the pressure of your stylus by getting thicker where you press down more. You can always go back and clean them up later if you goof something, but the resulting effect is really worth it, I think. Thank you for noticing them!

Amazing just how much colouring can change a picture. The effect is amazing! I love the light/shadow on the coat. It looks so soft (how did you manage to make it like that?). I also really like the background and the "rough" wall pattern. Really, really great!!

That coat... It was a serious pain, actually! Trying to find one online that was close with lighting etc, I finally had to have someone model it for me and even then the folds weren't quite right. It definitely didn't come out as well as the sheets in my 'banned' piece *rolleyes* but I'm glad you like the way it came out.
The background was a lot of work too, though I finally found the PERFECT pattern on a website that I go to every workday

Well, I liked it, but it was really hard to get as much emotion in Winry's face as I wanted. I was going for 'my knees aren't going to hold me up' and I think I got more 'I'm about to sneeze' - LOL!
I'm in the middle of doing research for the next piece, the one I am working on for you and hopefully it will be much better. I wasn't happy with how stiff he looks in the proofs I sent you and I picked up a couple of good closeups of kisses so that I can modify his body, hopefully so he actually looks into it. LOL!

Considering Winry's face is a bit obscured, it would be difficult to put much emotion on her face, but you did it. She has that dream-like, in the moment look, like she's concentrating on Ed and the kiss and nothing else!
If I find any references that might help you I'll send them your way. I should find the reference I used for "Puppy Love", my drawing of Ed and Winry laying side by side with him leaning in to kiss her and send that to you so you can see where I got inspiration for it. Now that I have a spiffy new program to play with, I might try my hand at drawing again!

Send it along if you can - I did find one that I liked of an anime kiss that gave me good detail and was appropriately sexy - but I'm open to other suggestions. I just didn't think the image I was originally using was good because he was actually leaning back and I think that comes across even though I changed the picture. The original body language still comes through.
