Imagine that you were a factory worker living in a Midwestern town. Perhaps in Ohio or Michigan, maybe Wisconsin. You worked hard at your union job alongside people of several different races and backgrounds. It paid well. You judged people based on their deeds, not the color of their skin or any other external quality. If people were honest and hardworking, you liked them, and if not, no. You are a white man, but you don't judge people based on their race, creed, or origin.You and your wife made enough money for a house, two cars, and had plenty of cash left over to raise two children. You weren't rich, but you made ends meet and had some money to save. You were and still are religious, with roots in the US going back at least a century, perhaps more. You consider yourself to be patriotic, decent, and on the whole, those are words which describe you and your town pretty well.
Then things began to change. Your town's factory shut down. You had to take a job at a store which paid a fraction of your previous wages. Many people left your town, the tax base withered, and your infrastructure crumbled. The schools got worse. Crime went up. You legitimately feared for your children's safety and security. You were forced to send them to a school you didn't want them to go to because of actual fears about violence, but when you complained, they called you a racist. They called you a lot of things, in fact. When you complained about outsourcing, they called you a xenophobe. When you took offense to violent minority gangs, they called you a racist. When you bought a firearm for protection and continued to go to church, they mocked you, saying that you "clung to guns and religion."
"They" happened to be the democratic party. The same people whose economic policies helped close down your factory, ruin your schools, and insulted you for objecting to the abuse you suffered through. Calling mostly decent people "deplorable" only got them to hate the democrats. Pandering to immigrant communities while ignoring the plight of the population who was already there was sure to backfire sooner or later. It just did.

As a 68 year old who participated in his first civil rights protest while nine years old and who was a driving force in the civil rights, gender equality and free speech movement during the sixties and seventies, I say that you nailed it.
The Democrats have betrayed the liberal movement, turning it into exactly the type of organization that I have always opposed. Think of Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." The Democrats today are opposed to most of the Bill of Rights and create votes by promoting bigotry and fear. Exactly like wanna-be tyrants everywhere.

Well none of that's true. What happen is that republicans let your factory closed, then they blamed the unions and you believed them.
Republicans then began to target minorities and forced many into a life of crime, but then they blamed the victims of their policies and you believed them.
Republicans then started letting the LBGT community die from aids and then claimed it was God's wrath, and you believed them.
Republicans then started to claim that liberals and democrats where coming for your guns, and you believed them.
Republicans then strengthen immigration laws, forcing thousands of people to come into the country illegally to make a living, but then they blamed the immigrant and you believed them.
You believed republicans over and over because it was easy, because it was convenient, and because they feed your ego. Everything that happen wasn't Christian America's fault, it was the fault of the immigrant, the fault of the minority, the LBGT, the liberal, and the atheist. It was everyone else's fault, just not yours because you're a republican and it isn't republicans fault. Except it is the fault of the republican party. And it is your fault because you continue to support them over and over.

1] Over regulation closed factories bubba.... That's on the Democrat's hands. The layers of bureaucracy now required for plants to stay in operation is nuts. Democrats run cities like Detroit that used to be productive cities with major plants. Between the unions and the democrat policies, it's a wasteland of closed factories.
2] You may want to check history because apparently you've skipped a few classes. It was republicans that promoted and passed the equal rights amendment, freed the slaves, etc... with ZERO democrat votes. Facts don't lie, but democrats do it out of habit. 3] It was George Bush that boosted research and financial support for finding a cure for AIDS. Even rabid liberals had to admit that under a republican administration AIDS research skyrocketed. Again, read a bit... and not just your liberal talking points that are filled with fake news from MSNBC.
4] Just who is wanting to deny second amendment rights? Yep... the democrats. All childish gun laws are coming from people who wouldn't know a breech from a muzzle. 1) The factories closing in Detroit had nothing to do with unions or Democrats, it first had to do with other countries like China and Mexico allowing companies to abuse their workers. Now it has to do with robots and automation.
2. But all those things you mentioned, the civil rights act and the freeing of slaves where done by liberals and progressives, not conservatives. Conservatives like you fought tooth and nail to stop any minority from having even basic rights.
3) Yes Bush did increase research to AIDS research and I respect him for that. But if Regan had done that in the beginning instead of blaming gay people we could have saved millions of lives.
4) No liberal or Democrat wants to stop you from having a gun. We just want reasonable rules and regulations to stop dangerous people from being able to get guns legally. And don't try and sell me that garbage about criminals not respecting the law because other nations have tougher gun laws and have far less gun violence than we do. And nor is it against the second amendment because it clearly state that is suppose to be for the sake of an armed and REGULATED militia. 5) Yes it was both Dems and Repubs who did increase the immigration laws but it was the Repubs who pushed those laws to remain during the Obama years and then voted in a dangerous wannabe tyrant into the white house because he wants to build a wall.

1] Factories in liberal areas like Detroit left due to the excessive union demands. Any business that understands business knows you can't produce products when the cost of labor exceeds the market demand price point. Simple economics that if you had ever run a business you'd understand. it's something I deal with every day as an adult business owner. They moved to Mexico and other countries because the cost of labor is lower since they don't have unions to hassle with, they don't have the excessive regulations to deal with and the extremely high taxation that the liberals have pushed beyond reason. We have the highest corporate tax rate of any industrialized nation and that's on the libs hands. We have the highest labor costs and that's also on the libs hands. Unions had their day... that day was a century ago. States with right to work laws have MUCH higher progress in the area of manufacturing. Facts don't lie, but liberals do.

A Republican President freed the slaves, The Civil Rights act of 64 was a republican led action, Martin Luther King was a republican, and democrats opposed these action. 4] I'm actually laughing at your lack of knowledge here. EVERY supreme court decision on the 2nd Amendment defines it as a personal right. EVERY right in the bill of rights is for the citizens. Just because you want to reinterpret the constitution in a way that EVERY supreme court in the history of the United States has reconfirmed, it is a PERSONAL right and not a right of a militia. English is a pretty complicated thing so you may not understand. The Supreme Court decision was based on contextualization of the document we call the constitution. (Something that Obama stated was 'open for debate' lol) A well regulated militia in context of the righting of the constitution was defined by civilian ownership of firearms to defend their nation. Gun ownership as a constitutional right is not for hunting and not even for personal protection. It protects the citizen from a tyrannical government. Every good liberal socialist starts by taking firearms away from its citizens.... (I know history is tough for you but I;ll try)... Nazis, Bolivia, Venezuela, Chavez, Obama... all started with eliminating a citizen's right to own a firearm. It makes it a whole lot easier to line them up and shoot them if they don't shoot back.
5] Yes.. Libs and Republicans have both increased immigration laws. And Obama's department of justice has ignored them all, causing a massive influx of illegals into the United States. Americans were tired of it and voted for a New President who will begin enforcing the laws of the land. You may not like it, but there are immigration laws. I've traveled to a dozen other countries and this is the only nation that lets people violate their immigration laws in this way. YOU should try entering Mexico illegally. Yes Regan did give funding to aids reaserch after years of denying it was a problem and stopping the CDC from doing reaserch. That's still the popular vote. More and more Americans, especially minorities, are living in cities and suburbs and when it comes to presidential elections the voting system needs to reflect this. Now I know you are going to say some shit about how getting rid of the electoral college will allow states with larger populations to dominate the election, well I have three rebuttals to that tired old argument. First, that won't even happen because we will be counting individual votes rather than by region, so it won't really matter where someone is voting. Second, even if that did happen it would be a good thing since places with larger populations should have a greater say in how the country is run. And finally, we have the house of representatives and the senate, so even places with a smaller population still have equal representation in the federal government.

And make no mistake the republican party courted these racist to their party by using terms like "tough on crime".
