How do I fix the hair itself that has white on the edges, when it is the only material?

if you send some screenshot (print screen the picture) maybe I can answer it.

Here you go. It's one single material, so there's nothing to put before or after it

actually from single material, you can separate it into many materials. Same like my hair above, the hair formerly single material, but I separate it to be 2 materials.
If I see your screenshot, in the inside part it look good. In this case use this way
select all, edit -> face -> reverse

Thanks! How do I separate one material into multiple different ones? I tried your idea, it worked: however now it seems that there are still a couple hairs overlapping, and I think making the layers separate materials would be ideal. Do you know a way to do that?

select vertex of hair you want and separate it by select edit -> face -> truncate
note : the word "truncate" maybe has different name following what PMX english version you use.

What to do if the converted model from XPS to MMD invisibe (Applying textures in pmx still doesn't work)?

Import the model in 3ds max and rename hair meshes by adding new materials there as a guide to sort the meshes in pmx editor. There's simpler ways to do things than relying to pmx editor.

I dunno what was causing it
It looked fine im pmd/pmx editor but once you loaded it into mmd the shoes were transparent, and once you switched to camera mode the shoes just went solid black
So i finally just got fed up with it and changed the shoes,i still have no idea what the problem was though

If the shoes were completely black it may have been one of these: The diffusion levels were messed up, the black outline wasn't set right (May have to disable it for the shoes in PMXeditor or PMDeditor) The shoe model didn't have "2 sided" checked off. Sometimes it may even be the textures file type. Try saving textures as .jpg. But it is almost 100% certain that if you check "2 Sided", materials will no longer look "transparent" i.e the insides of sleeves and skirts will no longer be see-through.
Hope that helped (If you thought about tying to fix it again with the shoe model you first had)
