Description
I whipped up this little tutorial for those who have asked how to set up or make their own mangas/comics and or booklets, when I was in college we learned how to hand make our own books to understand the layout and process. They layout is the most important part when it comes to printing it and the next part of the tutorial will show how to do a simple saddle stitch binding. on your own only using two staples and a ruler.
This is the sort of thing I do at work all day, and yes for every book we make before it goes into the printing machines, we have to do a mock up by hand to make sure the page order is correct, so this is a good skill to learn if you wish to go into any sort of creative field and really is a lot of fun once you learn it since you can then make your own books easy

Lets say for a moment that your trying to print out something novel sized. (We'll say 50 pages on word for now, I've done up to 100, but that's neither here nor there.)
Is there an easy way to tell the computer to print off the pages properly? When I did hand made books I had to cut and paste everything so it landed in word the way it printed. It was very time consuming and a big pain in the butt.

Well for long books like that....you need to use an imposition program that can do it for you, First you would need to convert your Word Doc to a PDF format, then you can use www.imposeonline.com
I have personally not used that particular program as we have Impositoning software at my work, but I have been told this does the same thing, hope that helps good luck!

Thank you so much! I did it the long way a year and a half ago and you have no idea how much trouble it caused me to make that gift! What I was doing was making a hand sown book of my friends favorite fan fictions. (Not my cup of tea, but perfect for my friend at the time. She adored it.) I had figured out how to do everything on a small test book, but the painstaking part was the copying and printing. I got scared off of it because of the last time I did it, but now I can make my own books with little trouble! Thank you! (In case your curious, this is the way I made the book, jamesdarrow.deviantart.com/art⦠)
I'm going to explore the program first chance I get. Thank you again, the person who made that tutorial had no idea how to help me and neither did anyone else I asked for help. Thank you again, and for the last time. (For now)

I am so glad I could help, you come to the right person since part of my job is graphic design at my work is Pre-Press which includes preparing things for press. I have learned lots of short cuts and programs they don't teach in college. If you have a professional version of Adobe Acrobat, it has an imposition software as well which is what we use. though if worst comes to worst I can imposition the file for you, just send me a note if you need some help, I know how frustrating it can be trying to do this sort of thing, and do not mind helping.

Thank you for the offer, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of the one online now that I've fiddled with it a bit. I'll let you know how it goes, that is once I've chosen a file to do this with. I'm looking forward to making a hand made book again, it's been ages and I remember enjoying it, especially once I had it in my hand. Now, to find something with the right length for the endeavor I have in mind...

Awesome! I am pleased to hear that! I have a loved for books and there is nothing better than being able to make one with your own words and work in it, I love printing for that reason, that is why I chose to work where I did, let me know how it turns out!

Aaa this is wonderful! I run a small zine with the art club at my school and no matter how many issues we put out we always manage to forget how to do it. We've tried making our own guides but even then it doesn't work out without a lot of trail and error. Thank you so much!

Are you saying you are ready for printing? you have all the files ready as digital pages?

I think so it's on a file I have it all at the print shop were I get my fine prints made. It's on a thumb drive I'm not to knowledgeable on the ol computer aspect of art I'm kinda ol school knuckles are still dragging on the floors paint brushes and pens ya dig. I was thinking it would be way cooler to bind my self or that seems like a lot of work so I also thought of out sourcing. Just lookin for pointers or tips. Cheers

Ah, I see, well according to how you want the book bound will determine a lot.
if you saddle stitch them which is with two staples in the center and folded you need to have your pages set up the way I have them in the tutorial.
But if you want to do what is called a "Perfect Bound Book" your set up would be different and more like simple front to back single pages. this is a good tutorial for the steps on how to do it on youtube. [link]
But if you are planning to do a lot of books you probably want to outsource. [link]
THis place is really good because they will print and bind your book for a very low cost without forcing you to buy like a 1000 books.
I hope that helps!

Thanks so much for this. I recently had to print some booklets and went through a few copies before I got the layout correct, so having this to reference will be really useful for next time Somehow I always forget about having the correct number of pages so there aren't any odd blank ones
