This is not only my first pic of Ruby but also my first female character pic and I'm very proud of how she came out. The background theme has two objects to represent her weapon of choice (grappling hook) and her profession as a treasure hunter for hire (treasure chest).

This can act as a reference if anyone wants to draw her.

Skills:
Ruby is very intelligent and educated in ancient cultures and archaeology; she is able to translate most languages and has a small collection of books to aid her in research, she also has a photographic memory and can memorise certain things very fast. Even though she is the brains of the team Ruby is very capable of defending herself, she is a very agile fighter who can avoid enemy attacks so gracefully you’d think she was dancing around them, she also has some skill in certain weapons like ropes and claws. Ruby also has a beautiful singing voice, which she is very modest about and only does it when her sister or her friends insist on it.

Super Forms – Ruby only ever achieved a Super form once, unfortunately it was the Dark Super form. During a mission to take down a Fake Chaos Emerald factory she absorbed the energy from 7 of the Emeralds to save her friends. Her fur turned black, her eyes became pupiless and she was surrounded by a dark red power aura, she gained all the abilities of other Super Forms but none of the positive qualities, she attacked with such ferocity it scared her friends. She was still able to tell friend from foe but it was an experience she didn’t want to repeat.

Items/Equipment: Ruby carries with her a rucksack whenever she goes out on a mission, this contains a number of tools she could make use of in situations: -

Grappling Hook – This is a 4-prong grappling hook tied to a long rope, although it was originally meant for climbing Ruby has come to use it as her signature weapon. She is able to swing it around striking enemies with it or tie them up with the rope, but she can also use the hook alone as a close combat weapon in desperate times.

Climbing Claws - These are a pair of gloves with sharp metal claws on the fingers, they allow Ruby to climb up most surfaces but she has used them as close combat weapons, combined with her agility they become very dangerous.

Glider – Ruby’s backpack can deploy a glider that allows her to glide short distances depending on the height she starts at.

Other – Ruby also has a number of items like certain books, make up kit, archaeology tools, etc for several situations.

Personality: Ruby is a typical career girl who loves her job and finding new clients, she also enjoys bossing the others around a bit but only during work hours. She gets annoyed when Umbra doesn’t pay any attention to her and has a hot temper, which she loses now and again mostly whenever Gem makes advances on Umbra. She values her friends and family above all else though when it’s important and cares about them deeply. She is a strong and reliable friend, which she shows when she took Lunas to the music district and the park when he was feeling home sick to show him the parts of the modern world he likes. She is very attached to Umbra as she is saved by him numerous times and can get jealous over him easily but she knows that no matter what, he will never abandon her. She is very caring towards others and wants to help anyway she can, either through emotional support or rallying the rest of the team to assist in the dilemma. When confronted by a foe she keeps up a bold personality and mocks them, this personality does vanish however when on the verge of death.

Fears and Flaws: Ruby tends to get jealous very easily when it comes to Umbra getting hit on by other girls, especially Gem. Also she has a fiery temper the boys have grown to be careful of, this temper is usually brought on by her getting annoyed but someone or frustration. She’s normally very bold and strong willed but she can break down when faced with death or if her friends have suffered, especially if she was the cause.

Background: Ruby and her sister Vicky were orphaned after their parents were killed by a robot that went on a rampage, they were then raised by their mother’s friend Uncle Ben. Since then while Vicky went to music classes, Ruby went to university to study ancient cultures and languages, after graduating she decided to start up a treasure hunting agency where the museum or other clients can hire her to find a certain artefact or treasure and pay her, but she had to hire herself professional treasure hunters which take up most of her profits. One night she was thinking how she is going to make ends meet with this business when she spotted a dark figure breaking into the museum, she went to investigate and found in the main display of the museum a Wolf by the name of Umbra trying to steal a gem. They start fighting until the alarm get tripped, Ruby gets caught up in Umbra’s escape and they ride his extreme gear while being chased by squad cars. In the end Umbra takes her to his hideout in the park. After talking some more about each other Ruby sees that Umbra isn’t a bad guy and offers him a deal, since she has connections with people that know where a certain artefact is rumoured to be found, it’ll make it easier and legal for Umbra to find treasure, if its magical Umbra does with it what he wishes but if it isn’t he and Ruby sells it to a museum, in return Umbra becomes Ruby’s permanent treasure hunter so she doesn’t have to hire others.

Over the next year and a half Umbra and Ruby become very close and fond of each other and started dating. One day Umbra is sent to the Mystic on a mission and doesn’t report back all night, Ruby stays up all night waiting for him worrying. Then in the morning he comes back to the apartment with a blue echidna called Lunas and a robot called Rej, and after an argument between her and Umbra she got introduced to the other two. (See Lunas and Rej profiles), after some convincing the two are allowed to live with both her and Umbra. Ruby sends Umbra back to the temple in the Mystic Ruins to see if more treasure is there, Umbra convinces Ruby to let Lunas and Rej come and she reluctantly agreed. When the trio returned back home with a new treasure Ruby is happy to see that the job went well and offered Rej and Lunas to be assistant treasure hunters to Umbra, they accept and thus Team Eclipse is formed.

Since then Ruby has gone on many adventures on her own or with her friends, taking on Hex and her minions, Eggman, meeting new allies like Master Magnus and Rose the Weaver as well as new foes Ares the Eagle and the Jackal Brothers. And many other adventures…

Creator’s Notes: Ruby originally began as a secondary character compared to my main team, as I only spared little time to think of her details. I based her original design off a background character of a web comic I read and made a sprite of her. But it looked too much like the character from the comic so I changed the look a little. She started to take more shape in character the more I developed the others as she was Umbra’s girlfriend. It wasn’t until I hired a proper artist to do pictures of my characters that Ruby really leapt from secondary to a primary character, I decided to include her in the line up more or less on a whim and when the pictures were done she looked way better then I ever imagined, the reason for this was that the artist had to make up certain details as I lacked any detailed description of Ruby at the time. The new design was completely different from the design I based her off and the new features the artist added were excellent. After that I got to work on making Ruby a profile like I did with Umbra and the others but because I didn’t put that much thought into her at the moment I had to use all the creative skills I had, what would she do in a game, how would she fight, what abilities would she possess and most importantly what was her overall personality. After a couple of days of thought and experimentation I had a proper main female character complete with a back-story and gimmicks that can compete with the others. I’m not sure if she could compete with any of the female characters other fans have made but I think she’s not a bad attempt.
