Description
Its been a very long time since I drew my number one girl character myself, I've just been asking other more skilled artists to draw her in their styles. This is another updated reference for use in a Profiles project I'm working on for my characters that started with Rej's new design a couple of months ago.

I wanted to give Ruby a new look to reflect her more as a Treasure Hunter so I dropped the long gloves and gave her a jacket similar to Sally Acorn's, haven't decided if it should be leather or another material yet. Another update I got for her is she traded in her Grappling Hook weapon for a high tech Stun-Pistol similar to the Emergency Pistol Samus Aran uses with her Zero Suit in Metroid, hence the holster on her right thigh.

The actual drawing was a long process of me trying to improve and set a standard for myself on Female characters, I also requested advice and opinions from other artists who all kindly showed me how to improve the original drawing, to which I thank very, very much.

The photoshop file is also more complicated than my usual stuff since I wanted this referance to be as flexible and easily edited as possible so I can try new clothes designs, arm poses and facial expressions in the future for my Art Blog.

I won't start work on her back view until I finished the updated designs for Lunas and Umbra which are coming next.

I am so glad I layered the Photoshop file the way I did, it makes revising these Reference Dolls (Yes that's what I'm calling them) so much easier. After showing my updated ruby design to some people on DA and to some online friends who I respect as fellow Sonic fan artists, they gave me some constructive criticisms about her. Now while I and the friends who helped me focussed a lot on her figure when I first started this project, I neglected a couple of details that I should of considered; When doing Sonic feet I default to the sausage look from Sonic X, but my friends pointed out that the way I did it made her feet look odd and too large. When I asked for advice my friend was kind enough to provide an instructional corrections to a nude pic of Ruby where she explained how feet are structured and how they would look with cartoon paws. I like this style now and will adapt it to any future Sonic arts I do in the future.

Another note was her arms and her hands of which I did try to re-sketch but I wound up struggling and gave up after doing the one arm (And even now it doesn't look any better, I'm having an off day when I did that). Despite this, the point of this Reference Doll was to make an easily editable image where I can re-sketch new arms poses, new clothes designs and new expressions without having to start from scratch, so I will try and redo the arms in the future, but this will do for now. Speaking of expressions I've always drawn Ruby with the "Half-Lid" look that Rouge sports. Now while I still love that look I wanted to see how she would look with fully opened eyes and maybe a wink. I'll let you all be the judge since I quite like the change.

Updating my character Ref Dolls ready for a Character Reference Sheet project I’ve been meaning to start ever since I first created them.
I wanted to give my characters a simple pose as the Ref dolls will be used as the main design Reference, also to imrpove on the arms and hand proportions.
Much like with Umbra, didn't have to change much for Ruby, although I decided to give her tail more volume to it. Also went back to the half lidded eyes just to show that her eyelids are a darker colour for reference sakes.

Next update will be Rej but fortunately he's already in the right pose so I don't need to redraw his arms. Once he is sorted I can start work on the back views.
