WARNING:I'm long winded.
Devised with CS2 and a Wacom tablet in mind.
REMEMBER: If the mane and tail look ugly here, it's because the original bg image isn't purple, but.. You know, not purple.
What looks blocky here flows there. You'd be surprised how often that actually happens, I think. Or maybe not!Or maybe I should stop rambling again.
Dedicated to everyone who has ever pestered me about making a tutorial on this, and to those who just want to know one simple way of doing it.
Here's hoping I didn't confuse anyone. lmao.

Oh wow, I've never tried fully painting manes and tails before! I might give it a shot though... it would be very helpful if you had some in-progress visuals to illustrate the different steps.

hey i used the brushes that you showed here in a manip. I'm hoping I was allowed to use them, or else you wouldn't have put them in the tutorial, right? if not, I'll definitely take downthe manip I used them in. (: I also used the tutorial

You can most definitely use those brushes. 
Drawing manes is so much fun. Frustrating, but fun, just because of all the things you can do with it. Do you use a tablet?

yep, i use a wacom bamboo fun. i'm not all that experienced with it, but it's alot of fun to play with and doodle

I tried to make brushes, but they did not really work out... Idk.. maybe I was doing it wrong... Where could I get the brushes that you have? If you don't mind.

They're included in the top of the tutorial. I don't really use those anymore; I believe the ones I use are included in the HairyBrushes2 brush pack, though I'm not positive. You can make your own, though; basically they're speckled brushes of different sizes, then the plain hard round brushe, 1 and 2 px big.

Please I am about to cry! Every time I try to make the same kind of brushes you have used for your hair it just makes it dot over and over and not smooth together to make hair lines. Please please PLEASE PLEASE get back to me on this one I am so lost and feel helpless!

I don't use photoshop, but I know with brushes like these I have to set the "step" setting down to as low as it goes (for my program psp it is "1") I don't know if photoshop has that, but maybe try that?

I have psp x2 (corel version) and I like it, but I can't say much compared to photoshop or other programs because it's all I've had, lol. I think it's much more simplified than photoshop but it's been great to learn on; has most of (definitely not all of the neat things) the things photoshop though, lol.

Mn, I have Photoshop CS2, but I have limited knowledge on how to color well on it. Or what to use. (Been told so many things at once its scrambled my brain. I want to learn how to color in many colors but it seems so hard.)

Some of them are in PS. Others you can make just by doing speckling; make some of the dots harder and others softer, and try to keep all the ones around the edges softer to help blend/fade out.

Sure thing. Let me know if it doesn't work out well - I can always send you the brushes I have.
And yeah, tablets make everything nice. But you could always use a ton of layers to help fade out the edges of the brushes if nothing else.
