Description
This map represents both my first attempt at digital cartography, and my first digital project period. I am tremendously indebted to the good people at the Cartographers Guild (forum.cartographersguild.com/i⦠), particularly Ascension and Gidde, for providing the tutorials and helpful criticism that enabled me to create this map. This map was created completely in GIMP.Cheers,
-Arsheesh

This is the Map of Maps. I just found your campaign on Obsidian Portal and had to track down the map - hoping beyond hope that a tutorial for such a map existed. You have made my day, friend. I can't wait to try it out and I just finished downloading GIMP and Wilbur. Thanks!

Thank you BWByars!Β I'm really glad you like it.Β The method for creating this sort of map can be a bit tricky, so if you find yourself stuck or need some advice feel free to PM me.Β
Cheers,
-Tad

I appreciate that, Tad. I love what you did with Age of Legends - a great way to bring your faith to the table.

Thank you BWByars!Β And thanks for noticingΒ Yes in fact one of my main design goals way back nearly 15 years ago when I first began work on the setting was to fashion a cosmology and mythology that was more in line with my own faith tradition, rather than that of a sort of generic paganism.Β I was very much influenced by the works of Tolkien and Ursula Le Guin.Β The northern regions of the world (Mierodran to the East and Veskar to the West) are pretty well fleshed out (though I haven't updated my AoL site to reflect my more recent campaigns in Veskar).Β The rest of the Western continent has only been roughly sketched out and the surrounding world not at all.Β So there's still a whole bunch of work to do.Β But I see it as a long-term project.Β The AoL campaign itself unofficially ended back in 2011 when my wife and I relocated.Β We had talked about one day picking back up again with it via Roll20 but that hasn't happened yet, and at this point, I find it unlikely to.Β However I still use the site as my main repository for information about the world.Β Anyway enough of me rambling, thanks for taking the time to take a look at my campaign world, and for offering me such nice feedback on it.Β I wish you all the best in your own campaign.
Kind regards,
-Tad

I'm doing a similar thing, but from the accommodation that I see in Genesis to the ancient Near Eastern culture. Basically, what if Genesis had been accommodated, not to the ancient Near East, but to the Teutonic/Scandinavian tribes? So sort of a subverted Norse mythology.
Have you ever read Brian Godawa? He did several novels that really draw out the ancient Near Eastern context with Nephilim and the Watchers.

Huh, that's an intriguing premise for a campaign.Β I dig it!Β I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Brian Godawa's works.Β Sounds like something I might be interested in though, thanks for recommendation.Β My own influence for the angel and demonology was derived more from Tolkien's Simarillion, but the Nephalim angle did not escape my notice.Β

When I was about 1/3 through this one, I told my 16 yo son about it. He said it sounded like the best parts of the Percy Jackson series all in one story. And that was in the first 3rd of the book.

Thanks so much Joshua. Β I made this with GIMP, which is a free to download program, so if you are looking for good free resources I'd highly recommend it. Β Also, if you are not already familiar with it, the Cartographers Guild has many great tutorials on how to create digital maps. Β In fact, I've created a tutorial there on how to create a map in this style using two free programs, GIMP and Wilbur:

The map looks great! How well does GIMP work for painting and doing stuff like this? I currently have Corel Painters Essential 4, and it is rather disappointing.

Thanks SuperCJ! Well I haven't done a whole lot of painting in GIMP, and that which I have done has been with the use of the mouse, so I'm not sure if I'm really qualified to answer your question. That said, I know many people over at the cartographers guild do use GIMP for painting, so that's a good sign at least.
Cheers,

awesome skills with gimp. did you use some of the tutorials posted at cartographer's guilds?

Hey thanks Istarlome! Yes for this map I used Ascension's Atlas Tutorial. The other map borrowed somewhat from that tutorial as well, but was more experimental. Thanks for the feedback by the way, much appreciated!

Hm, that hadn't occurred to me. I wasn't intentionally trying to create a continent shaped like one found on Earth, but perhaps I subconsciously I was drawing from what was already familiar.

This map is really, REALLY good! That said, I'm not exactly the greatest cartography critic out there, but I particularly like the landforms. Most digitally made maps I've seen look more like land-colored clouds than an actual continent, but I think yours looks very good

Hey thanks for the kind works Aenek, much appreciated. And for the record, I'm not much of a Cartography critic either.
