Description This is map of Eriond, the world that is the setting for a homebrew RPG setting that I've sort of been working on for the past several years (though not as much recently). This map took quite a long time to finish, but I'm fairly pleased with the end result. It is necessary to download the image if you would like to see much of the detail.

As per usual, this map is done in GIMP and Wilbur, with some of the text elements being done in Inkscape.

Cheers,
-Arsheesh

Very much remind me Snaiad map. I even compared them. They are different in the end but very alike.

You paint worlds and you don't know about Snaiad? That was one of the first worlds in that art genre. But exobiology mostly, its map is not that detailed.

So long as the map is not being used for commercial purposes, and it is a map that I own the copyright to then I'm fine with that.  Which map did you have in mind?

Hmm, this was a commission I did several years back.  I can't recall if the client requested the copyright for this piece or not, and I've lost touch with the him.  So unfortunately I'm not sure if I'm at liberty to offer you the rights to use this map or not.  I'm not sure if he ever ended up using this map or not but you might be able to run a Google search using the title of the map and track him down yourself.

Cheers,

This map is quite similar to the world in my story, and it has brought me great inspiration.

I am a web author from China. Can I modify and apply it to the story?

I'm not an English native speaker. This passage comes from translation software. Where ambiguity may arise, please excuse me.

Hi Yuxuan, so long as the map is used for non-commercial purposes I'm happy to allow you to use the map for your web-story, provided that I am attributed as the map's author.  If however you plan to use the map commercially (i.e. if you receive an income from your web-stories) then I'd be willing to allow you a non-exclusive license to use the piece for a modest fee (feel free to PM me for details on this).

Cheers,

Love this map!  Would you be interested in selling poster-sized prints of it?  I'd like to buy one to hang over my game table.

arsheesh In reply to Failheart [2016-03-01 04:51:16 +0000 UTC]

Hi Failheart, sorry for the delayed reply, I've had my head down working on a commission.

I'm really flattered that my map will receive a place of honor at your game table!  I've just enabled the print function for this so you should be good to go.

Just an FYI, I had not initially created this map to be printed at poster size, but after reducing the DPI (Dots per inch) of the image to poster size, I managed to make the image large enough to be printed at 20x30" (with a bit of black bordering the top and bottom.  I can't promise that any print size larger than that will turn out well - I rather imagine it will be grainy.

Best wishes on your adventures, may all your dice roll true.

Cheers,
-Arsheesh

I'm a huge fan of your style. I've been trying to teach myself mapping with GIMP as well but I can't yet make the mountains look quite as crisp and attractive.

arsheesh In reply to GraveyardDuck [2014-09-16 18:46:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks GraveyandDuck!  Admittedly the mountains are one of the hardest parts of this method.  It took me quite a bit of trial and error to make these mountains.  Best advice I can give is just to keep practicing.  The more practice you get, the easier it becomes.  You begin to develop an eye for it.

Beautiful map.  My learning curve on adjusting the gradients & sliders for them needs work lol.  It would not adjust for me with Draconia, & I was afraid to ruin the project too.  Next map, I will attempt more, get my basins defined before the Wilbur process (I hoped Wilbur was gonna carve them for me) & do a proper map, like you have here my friend.

Wonderful world map!

Thanks JaeDub, I'm glad you like the map.  I think your Draconia map "is" a proper map.  Of course there's a learning curve, but you've done very well for just starting out.

Cheers,

Love the map! Your naming convention is solid for the countries/cities. Any work done this well deserves kudos! What fonts did you use? They are clean looking. Love the mountain ranges too. Very well done! 10/10!

Thanks for the feedback Argontath! As to fonts, I used Optimus Princepts Bold (for the continents) and Paternoster AH (for the countries).

The Mountains? Displacement?

arsheesh In reply to Broadshore [2011-09-06 17:45:22 +0000 UTC]

Broadshore In reply to arsheesh [2011-09-06 23:45:22 +0000 UTC]

Displacement as in.. um.... Did you give the mountains the realistic look using your brushes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arsheesh In reply to Broadshore [2011-09-07 17:24:41 +0000 UTC]

Ah. I used a combination method which involved generating random cloud patterns, linking them together (via the cut and paste method) into mountain ranges, and then further sculpting them with a soft round brush set at low opacity.

Broadshore In reply to arsheesh [2011-09-07 19:33:51 +0000 UTC]

ah!! That's a neat way of making mountains. I think I'll try that.
