Description This is a map of one of the regions of Eriond, the world of my homebrew campaign setting. The map was done in GIMP and Wilbur.

EDIT: The original file is much larger than what I'm currently able to display here. For a slightly larger view of the map, check out my post at the Cartographers Guild: [link]

Cheers,

Wonderful Map and technique! Would you consider doing a tutorial on how you create them?

Thank you Ralexpdx! Since you mention it, I have already begun working on a tutorial for this technique, but it may take me a month or so to finish it since I've got several other things going on at the moment. I'll let you know when it's done though.

Looks great. Veskar's terrain makes for a curious adventure indeed. So vast and mysterious. One could only imagine the unseen creatures, mysteries and dark magic that exist within the depths of the Glendor Forest.

Why thank you BCcreativity! I originally did this map for a campaign I was about to launch in this area, but the campaign never got off the ground. I have all sorts of plans for this region though, and dark and terrible mysterious certainly do abound in Veskar.

Very nice work - you've stated that you've used GIMP and Wilbur, but I was under the impression that Wilbur only *modifies* height terrain. Did you create the height terrain in Fractal Terrains?

Why thank you very much Mormegil. You can generate random terrain within Wilbur itself, but since this piece was based on a larger pre-existing world map, I needed to generate the terrain for Veskar to fit that map. I did the heightmap for this in GIMP, working with random cloud patterns which I painted over using various shades of grey-scale to achieve the terrain I wanted.

Ah, very smart! I've studied fractals professionally, and I've often considered writing my own fractal terrain software. The problem I had was that, as you point out, one typically wants terrain in certain places and only the details need to be random. Your solution sounds like a good compromise. Thanks!

Hey thanks for the feedback guys! I spent quite a few hours of trial and error trying to figure out how to do the Mountains. Still have allot to learn (especially about Wilbur), but I'm happy with the way this map turned out.

This is a really nice map, I am very fond of the mountain technique you have used, especially further up as it really gives a feel for the terrain.

Wow. That turned out gorgeously, dude. I really need to force myself to get and learn Wilbur one of these days...
