Description
I wanted to share part 1 of my unwrap series.Sadly, the rest of this series will only be available for my students studying Digital Animation and Game Design at Ferris State University - Grand Rapids.
Hope this can be helpful for beginners!

I have a quick question: How would you do a UV map for a four leg creature?

unwrap it in 3D Coat. Its super quick. I hear Modo is also very good at pelt mapping.Β

Is this something I have to install in Maya? or is it like crazy-bump where I can just download to my desktop?

Brilliant!
excellent info!
Id just like to add that, often, you have to increase the size of certain UV islands according to your needs.
Often, the head receives more space than it should. Or areas which are going to get the most attention or visual time could use a bigger island

Thanks Dr. Saad!
I do agree and that info has been added to additional pages of the tutorial. I believe that scaling certain islands outside that 1:1 scale in relation to the others is very dependent on needs of the project (or asset)
Right now I am working on a chapter regarding mirroring of UVs etc... its fun breaking down something so simple into more complex ways of understanding it!

That is excellent!
I knew that you were aware of the point i made, but i made that comment for people who arent that knowledgeable yet and might not come by your chapter/tutorial. Things like that usually tend to stick, speaking from personal experience.
Good to see you helping fellow artists!

Wow this is super helpful! Thank you
I'm currently only self taught (and roughly) because my 3DCG class doesn't start for about two more months, but I have a question. Is it bad that I only provide textures for half of the mesh and then mirror it?

That's described in part 3... but it depends on your project. That technique is common among mobile games.

Will you be uploading part three as well?

Will you still have this tutorial for students in 2 years ?
I've been thinking about going to Ferris State . But do students normally come in with some modeling experience?
And this is quite helpful. I always waste so much space with texturing and then I have like 20 seperate texture images.

Whoa super helpful!
Wish I could catch a glance at more of the tutorial.
Perhaps pass it along to Elona Van Gent or Eric Maslowski back at UofM? Heehee
