I'm doing some boring stuff atm, so I had to make a quick mentalDetour and do this little experiment to relax my mind...The options took more time than the gearDrawingEngine itself, but what took the MOST time was me playing with it!
It's almost hypnotic... maybe I should make a screenSaver version...
Press and hold your mouse to choose the position+size of the new adjacent gear... use SHIFT and CTRL(Mac
PTION) keys for additional actions...-> SHIFT - creates a coaxial gear
-> CTRL - creates a pulley system (pressing space with CTRL allows you to move the pulley)
For undo, pres "u".
Tip: to increase the speed of the gears, make a small one, then hold down SHIFT and make a bigger coaxial gear (it will have the same angle speed as the little one but greater circumference - hence more teeth...)
You can repeat this several times to increase the speed

I'm off looking for gears and other steampunk stylings to use for glass etch. I notice that you state "You may not use and/or reproduce my artwork in any way without my explicit and written permission" - what is the process for obtaining permission? So yeah, you can use it for your work. It would be cool to see one of your finished etch-works with these gears on them.

exelent flash. i could spend hours playing with it.
2 suggestions though.
- you should allow users to modify the speed of the main gear, and if you are up to it, allow users to modify the speed while other gears are connected to it.
- you should also change it so that the coaxial gears are not transparent.

Thanks, yeah, I wanted to make this into a game, with several more features, but I never had the time to do it :/
It's doomed to stay at this "experiment level", until I find some free time to play with it...
As for the transparent gears, the whole system is "place the gear on top of the others" kind of thing, and the transparency kicks in only when you place a bigger, coaxial, gear on top of the smaller one... without transparency, coaxiality between those gears wouldn't be as clear.

Wow! This is so cool! How did you make this? I dont know how to create a user interface responding program what action scripts do i use? Can u teach me or link me to tutorials?

Well it's some 500 lines of code. Third of which is the "user interface"
But it's not that hard at all. The most of the UI code went on drawing a "preview" position/size of the gear...
You should learn the Key class. And find somewhere how to implement "undo".

Any way about it, this is an incredibly fun doodad. I keep trying to make the biggest, fastest gears and, after doing so, hypnotizing myself with them.
