Description I have scoured Deviant Art, and have not seen too many pieces of fan art that shows actual parts of the Temple of Xian levels of Tomb Raider 2. I have been wanting to do this for a long time, and having played this level dozens of times, I think I might know why this is. The level is so memorable, but there are so many areas that are so tight, it is hard to condense them into a flat 2D image such as a drawing. I am going to be making several drawings of this unforgettable Tomb Raider level. Not only is it fun, but it also presents a challenge in portraying it in an accurate way.

Colored pencil, marker and ink on Bristol.
Approx time: 10 hours

I will be posting a short video of the making of this drawing soon! Please be on the lookout for it.

first time i played it, i thought that the terracotta statues inside the temple would attack me, and that the giant egg sack would explode and a bunch of spiders would come out.

Hahaha! Me too! I was paranoid to even enter those areas. But of course I had to in order to finish the game. A long time ago I did a piece on black paper with the spider caves...it was such a memorable part of TR2.

nothing like it was ever repeated. Except the Tinnos wasps. They came close

Thanks! The background wasn't too hard, it was just tedious coloring in all those boring rocks LOL

I've got nothing to speak of to add to what =Forty-Fathoms has already said about evoking the feel of the area.

Thank you very much! Once I figured out how to approach this particular drawing, it really just fell into place. If all drawings were only so effortless.

Wow, thanks very much! That is a huge compliment. Though I do believe that you certainly could make this.

Wow! You did such a great job on this, Jen! Oh my gosh. I can't believe how much detail you put into it. This area was probably one of my favorite areas due to it's grandness and mystery and that's exactly what you captured here so fluidly. I absolutely love all the color and you say you don't draw Lara well, yet this picture makes what you say completely untrue as Lara looks wonderful as done the temple.

Absolutely, completely, great job dear!

Thank you so much, my dear friend. Your opinions matter very much to me, and so I was very eager to hear what you thought about my drawing. I tell you, drawing this level is not going to be easy. I think I did the easiest area first! LOL

Forty-Fathoms In reply to ArtisticAdventures [2013-07-27 19:54:01 +0000 UTC]

I really am wanting to draw the area where Marco actually turns into a dragon as well as the area where he stabs himself. The designs on those walls are incredible!

And nor problem, hun. You did an amazing job!

ArtisticAdventures In reply to Forty-Fathoms [2013-07-28 03:10:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, me too...Those two scenarios would have to be drawn just right I think. Very tricky. But I think if anyone could, we certainly can.

I remember going to this temple for the first time, and those two tigers just freaked me out...

I think you did a great job, especially the entrance and water. Are those torches mounted on the pillars of the entrance, if so, I don't really notice the light emitting from them, not that I recall torches in the actually stage.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtisticAdventures In reply to purenai [2013-07-27 04:17:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yes, those are torches...there is a bit of light emitting from them, but as it is daylight in this particular area of the level, the light from them is not the dominant lighting in the scene which is why I did not make them more prominent. That was one thing I had to decide before I colored this was, "Am I going to be really true to the game and make the lighting as it is in the game? Or do I make it my own way and make the torches the only light source?" Well, wanting to be true to the game...I chose ambient daylight as the main light. But, keen eyes on your part I may add.

I see, overall, you've chosen an interpretation that turned out well. Thank you for the explanation about the planning.
