Artist's note:First of all, happy thanksgiving to my fellow Americans out there!
Second, I have returned from my hiatus after several months of battling a bad case of creative burnout. Throughout this past month, I've been periodically working on this family tree, in between school, personal issues, and the like.
. . . . . .
Please note that this is an AU, and is nowhere near the canon of MLP:FiM. With that said, I'll continue.
Long before the foundation of Equestria, there were kingdoms scattered across the world, consisting of different creatures with different cultures. One of the most common creatures of this world were the Equine, which were divided into different Kingdoms for many years: the Earth, the Sky, the Magic, and the Unity.
Over countless centuries, empires were born, and empires fell, but one empire is most remembered, for it is where two of the greatest Equestrian rulers would be born into. This was the House of Universum, a Royal family who ruled over the Kingdom of Commonia until the empire met its demise. Within Commonia, alicorns, unlike in modern day Equestria, were far from being a rare sight to behold. They were common.
Here is a summary of all the characters here.
The first Queen Regnant of the Alicornian Empire of Commonia was Selene, a bold, vivacious mare who ruled her kingdom for many years, before abdicating in favor of her son. Selene was the matriarchal figure of the Kingdom, and her family, and Princess Luna would be given her great grandmother's name as a middle name in tribute. Here, she is portrayed to be much younger. As the Queen Mother, she was well respected by her son's subjects, and strongly contributed to both of her grandsons' upbringings. For many years, up until her son was of age, Selene ruled as a widow, and the death of her husband and her son's father had a great impact on the both of them.
Captain Alrick was Selene's bodyguard, and father to Aethernus. Not much is known about him, but it is believed that Aethernus began a war with the Draconequui to avenge his father's unfair death by one.
Aethernus was a reserved and stoic ruler whose name is infamous for tyranny. He is the paternal grandfather of Celestia and Luna. After losing his wife Terra, following the birth of their son, Cosmos, he gradually descended into madness. He was known for having multiple flings with multiple different mares after his wife passed, but one notorious fling is with the leader of the Commonian guard: General Cassiopeia. It is unknown if Aethernus has had many more foals with his flings, but Cepheus is the only foal who is recognized as a legitimate child of his. Aethernus is still traumatized by his father's murder, which effects how he behaves in most of his relationships. Because of this, he refuses to marry after his beloved Queen leaves him a widower.
Terra was a kind, beloved Queen consort of Commonia who was known for her sass and quick-witted thinking. She was from a humble background, and grew up as a commoner within an orphanage, before being adopted into the family who would later establish the Crystal Empire. Empress Amore is Terra's adoptive younger sister, and is the ancestor of Empress Cadence, the current ruler of the Crystal Empire. She is the paternal grandmother of Celestia and Luna, and Celestia is said to most resemble her late grandmother.
Empress Amore was the very first ruler of a fragile empire which resided on umbrum grounds. This ultimately leads to her demise, after being turned to stone and shattered by one of her former subjects, Sombra, who turns out to be an umbrum as well. It is unknown if Amore can be put together in one piece and still be alive, but many historians perceive the Empress as dead.
King Cosmos Aethernus Universum is the son of King Aethernus and Queen Consort Terra, and was the last monarch to rule the Alicornian Empire of Commonia before Equestria was founded. He is the father of Celestia and Luna. Growing up without a mother had an impact, and his father often portrayed toxic masculinity on him. Cosmos learns to be a respectful stallion by his granny. However, he is far from perfect, and his views of toxic masculinity and egotistical manners inevitably affects the relationship he has with his wife and daughters.
Queen Solaria Amalthea Venus was the last consort of Commonia, and the mother to Celestia and Luna. She was born in the unicorn kingdom, Unicornia, and grew up in a life of nobility. Following her parents' scandalous divorce, Solaria lives with her father and sister in a much simpler, stress free life. However, this lifestyle doesn't last long, since she is eventually married to Cosmos. She is outspoken, independent, and has quite the temper at times, but is kind and protective of those she loves, especially her daughters.
Queen Celestia, the first sovereign of Equestria, begins her life as a unicorn by the name of Princess Caelesti, heir to the Commonian throne. However, a war causes her would-be empire to finally crumble. But, like how a phoenix rises from the ashes, Commonia arises in a new kingdom of unity, one that had never been achieved before, in Equestria. Where all tribes are united at last. Upon her coronation, she is named Celestia, Queen of the Sun. As she focuses on protecting her fragile new kingdom, she forgets to notice that the night needs its chance to shine in this sun-embezzled world - until it's too late.
Princess Luna is the Heir Subjective to the Equestrian throne, and began her life as a pegasus by the name of Princess Lunaria Selene. Growing up, she was always overshadowed by her elder sister and her abilities, and a sibling rivalry grows between the two. Luna suffers from mental illness, and the tantabus is a physical embodiment of her struggles. She is much more quiet and melancholic compared to her extroverted, optimistic elder sister.
Celestia has pyrokinesis, whereas Luna has hydrokinesis. Celestia inherits the pyrokinesis trait from her grandfather Aethernus, whilst Luna inherits the hydrokinesis trait from her grandmother, Terra. Luna's hydrokinesis is strongest during a full moon or lunar eclipse, but is weakest during a new moon or solar eclipse. Since Celestia has pyrokinesis, she can easily handle her phoenix Philomena without getting burnt in the slightest, and has a bit of a natural resistance to sunburn.
