Personality
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Stats:
Strength - 8 | Dexterity - 13 | Intelligence - 14
Wisdom - 15 | Constitution - 10 | Charisma - 12
Personality: Polite and well-mannered, Samuel is, in many ways, an unassuming lad. He was born the eldest of three, and took on the mantle of the man of his household alongside his father while he was growing up. Samuel learned the importance of hard work, and earning fair keep from a young age. This being said, he is both adaptable and resourceful -- he has learned to be, because he has to be. While at one time an accepting and trusting boy, the revelation of his father's dark endeavors has left him with a score against the world. Both guarded and hypercritical, he questions everything, in his own quiet way, and finds himself unwilling to bend on ideas and viewpoints once he has seen a matter to the end he provides, and settles a decision in his heart. While Samuel is, for the most part, seemingly collected, he wrestles with a deep set anger at himself, and he seeks to keep these emotions submerged like the creatures of the deepest ocean trench, only surfacing in tight lipped smiles, the clench of a jaw, or the quiet tuck of his head while he lets whatever task at hand refocus him to a better place.
At his core, Samuel is a gentle yet troubled soul, who tries to emit the appearance of strength while truly feigning his sense of self-worth and self-certainty. If asked what he wants, he can give the answers -- money, security, some sense of purpose. In truth, he simply wants his family back, whole and cared for and fed, and to leave a better legacy than his father before him.
And it frustrates him that he can't seem to have both.
Positive Traits: Adaptable, Compassionate, Polite, Hardworking, Resourceful, Focused
Negative Traits: Passive Aggressive, Guarded, Hypercritical, Restless, Unbending
History
Pre-group History: As a child, Samuel’s only true exposure to the ocean came through his father. His father was not a seafarer. He was neither a sailor nor pirate. Rather, he made his profession, and his family’s profession, as simple herders and farmers within the foothills of the mainland, and brought the fruit of their toils to the docks to sell to the traders who sailed into port.
Life was run-of-the-mill for Samuel and his family; he would help his parents work the farm, and he would help tend the house when his father disappeared for periodic intervals to deliver the goods they’d sown and produced to port. Samuel enjoyed the humdrum of country life, even as he enjoyed listening to the grand narratives his father would return with, or seafarers and traders and pirates, every time he came home from the docks.
One fall evening, when Samuel’s father was away on a lengthier trip to the pier, a rough knocking roused the family from their late Sunday rest around the fire. Samuel kept his siblings back, while his mother hurried to the door.
Samuel keeps silent on all that happened that night, but town gossip runs wild, and whispers through town are enough to piece together what unfolded next: the town guard had a long standing warrant against his father, and had collected enough evidence to arrest him on the charge of fraudulent dealings with the city’s criminal underbelly and pirate lowlife. He was thrown in prison without trial, and in quick succession, the ó Caoimh's lost their reputation, their business, and their livelihood.
His mother used what she had privately saved over the years to move herself and her children out of the toxic murmurings of the town, and sought refuge in a small bungalow in the forests along the coast, but no matter their movement, they could not escape their father’s reputation. While Samuel had once openly dreamed of joining the traders as a map maker, and even studied under one's tutelage for a season, he found his prospects torn from him with the uncovering of his father’s seedy business. He managed to find menial work in an old parish as a scribe to the local priest, but the pay was meager, and the shade on his face and him family name had already convinced him he would amount to very little else than a thief and scoundrel like his father before him.
So that’s what he became.
His mother had always been a frail woman, and sickly, even in her best of days. She strove to make ends meet, but Samuel soon found himself the main provider for his family. He found a second job at nearby acreage hauling fruit from the fields to the docks, but even with this work, he could not move his small family of four beyond the brink of the poverty line. So Samuel did what he though he had to do; he taught himself the art of pick-pocketing as a petty thief. Ever a bright child, and ever quick with his paws from the years he’d spent herding alongside his family, the trade was not difficult to learn, and his morals, he found, were easier to ignore the tenth and twentieth time he stole.
Samuel found his way to the pirates when he accidentally stole from the wrong sort of folk, one evening in late summer. While they caught him, they saw promise in his quick paws, though soon discovered his sea legs could be better. He was young, strong, quick to learn - and, even better, had a keen eye for penmanship, and the maps they read. They presented with a promise of riches instead of punishment.
He was conflicted; he had sworn to never become his father, become him, and here was -- but his family needed him. And if this was the only way to make sure they were fed, and kept out of harm…
Hesitantly, Samuel agreed to join their crew, and he took the moniker they gave him. A pirate -- he hated the name. Just like him.
But it wasn’t like society expected much more from him, anyway.

-- Playing any instrument he can get his paws on
Trivia:
-- Samuel’s first real experience of the ocean came when he was 8. During a festival at the pier, one of their old family friends invited Samuel aboard her ship for an easy day on the seas. Near the end of the excursion, a storm rolled in from the north; the winds picked up, the waves grew tall, and in one particularly violent thrust, the boat capsized, and threw both Samuel and their friend into the crashing sea. An experienced trading vessel fished them out of the water and braved the ocean back to shore, but Samuel has harbored a deep fear of the ocean and of storms ever since.
-- He loves stories but is a pretty awful storyteller
-- For the sake of his sanity, he pretends the ocean is a giant blue prairie, and lets himself think very little on the fact that it is very much not
-- Despite his station in society, Samuel is quite religious, due to his upbringing and his prior line of work
-- He’s remarkably quick at picking up instruments by ear, but give him sheet music, and he won’t know what to do with it
-- He deeply misses his family
