I think the problem is that people use "gay" in the same sense as they use "lame", "crappy", "shitty" etc. After the considerable effort by LGBT movements to reclaim the word as a neutral term describing a perfectly normal, acceptable sexual orientation, some issues with that usage are understandable.

You're right, people (at least the ones I know -my classmates) still use that word to classify something as bad. This is when I tell them something like "Well, what's wrong with being gay?". Or "Why do you care much about someone's sexual orientation?".
Yet they complain about dark comedy.

It's more common among younger/more immature people- I used to throw it around a lot, before I realized that it was a very negative, hurtful thing to do. There are so many degrading words to choose from in the English language... why "gay"? People may cry about "political correctness", but some things are considered inappropriate with good reason.
