Description
"...Then the ancient dusk-scather
Found the great treasure standing all open,
He who flaming and fiery flies to the barrows,
Naked war-dragon, nightly escapeth
Encompassed with fire; men under heaven
Widely beheld him. ’Tis said that he looks for4
The hoard in the earth, where old he is guarding
The heathenish gold..."
----Beowulf
This came as a result of rereading Beowulf. The Barrow Wyrm from the last third of the poem is the basis for most of the really classic English dragons: it hoards gold, breathes fire, has a venomous bite, and flies into a shrieking, murderous rage if it's disturbed. This old beast has been guarding its hoard for so long that its once-brilliant scales have turned white, but it's still pretty spry--as poor Beowulf is about to find out.

Amazing! You should make snake-like dragons more often! Also, I think you should draw the Sumerian dragons sometime .

Great! And it's probably pretty close to the original intent, with its very reptilian proportions.

Thanks! I wanted to play with a body shape that's a little bit more akin to a serpent than my usual dragons, which tend to draw heavily from dinosaurs. It's a fun change of pace.
Now I want to do a ruaisuchian dragon.

If I hadn't looked up the history of the word, I'd probably be as confused as DeinonychusEmpire.
But yeah, nice work.

Hmm, so the dragon that got the better of Beowulf was a wyrm? I didn't know that. I own the Beowulf epic, but I haven't gotten around to reading it through yet.

Wyrm is one of the oldest English names for dragon, so it seemed like a natural word for the picture.
And you really must! It's a great saga.
