Description Yay, my first vector picture! ^_^ (is it any good? it took so long to make! v_v )
It's supposed to be an illustration from the first chapter of my "Return to Shamballa" fanfiction here: [link] (I'm also wanting to revise the first chapter a little, so the pic shows a little more than the chapter does at the moment)

Basically, Officer Hughes comments that Al looks a lot like Alfons did at that age, and Al starts freaking out, and Ed's like "You're thinking too hard, Al. >_>" "

Oh, and the downloaded version is bigger.

Finally he's old enough for me to be a fangirl without also being complete freak. So, what are you doing tonight, beautiful?

Apparently I have some sort of deathwish. *glances at Ed*

Lovely vector work! It looks exactly how I'd imagine him to look at 17. Or maybe 20, it doesn't matter as long as he stays in my age bracket. How exactly does vector art work? How is it accomplished?

AsjJohnson In reply to PacificaArts [2009-06-30 14:16:54 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... Well, first, I think I made him look older than 17 by accident, from kind'a going too far in trying to make him look older than 13.
I wonder if... if Al gets a girlfriend, would he go for a girl more mentally his age or closer to his physical age? It's too bad the gate didn't age his body any. That could cause him problems. ^_^"
Now, as for vectors... Well, if you have Photoshop, have you ever used the pen tool? There's a setting for it where you can draw shapes - where when you begin to make a path, it is automatically colored. That's what I used for it. So, all the lines are made out of a really thin shape. You don't use the brush tool at all. Vectors are interesting because... well, let's say you're making a picture, and then you decide you would like it to be bigger. Usually, when using the brush tool, if you make it twice as big then all the lines will get fuzzy. But, with a vector, you can make it, like, 800% bigger and it'll look the same (although you may have to adjust a few points if they don't line up just right). Vectors also seem to look cleaner.
[link] - here's a tutorial about vectors. (they mention one way of making a vector by stroking paths, but I think they mention at the end or somewhere that it's not really a vector - which... makes me wonder why they even talk about that in a vector tutorial...)

Oh wow, this vector is actually really amazing! It's really your first? WOW. o.o This is epic. I LOVE Al's expression and Ed's is hilarious in the background there. XD lol I can totally imagine that happening to poor Al if Hughes were to talk to him. :3

He looks adorable. -^^- Wonderful job!

thanks. ^_^ (I've thought about editing it a little, but I'm not sure when or if I will... I edited Al too much, Ed needs references, and I've gotten tips about the background)
I've been thinking about making a second vector, with a semi-oc, but fanfics and comics seem to be getting in the way...

*-* The lineart... so clean! So crisp! How did you do it?
And the awkward expression on Al's face <3

The white text seems incredibly bold against the background though, maybe tweak the color/transparency a bit? ^-^

Now I go and write the essay that's due tomorrow, yes?

P.S. Dude what. I thought you were on my watch already <_<;; Apparently not? XD
Really going now. ㅡ_ㅡ;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AsjJohnson In reply to ehxhfdl14 [2008-12-01 13:25:41 +0000 UTC]

This is actually a vector, which is... hmm... donno what it is. Well, it's not drawn in the same sense. So, every vector has perfect lineart. But, it's really time consuming. If you have PhotoShop, you have to use the pen tool in shapes mode, and don't stroke the lines, but instead fill them - which means you have to draw at least two lines for every line. I might do another one sometime, but I don't feel like it now. ^_^" (but I do feel like doing a comic... which I'm sure to work on in two weeks...)

I've been meaning to play around with the text some more. Someone else mentioned it, too... (and I may want to edit the shape of Al's face - I think I overdid something... and maybe edit Ed a little, if I can find a reference where he looks something like that...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ehxhfdl14 In reply to AsjJohnson [2008-12-02 03:24:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh really? So the "lines" are actually made of two thinner lines? Hmm. I tried searching for definition but failed- the closest I got was that it's based on lines instead of dots, like in Photoshop (So I'm guessing Corel Painter is a vectoring program?)

Ah, really. But the references are hard to find when you actually want them, no?
Good luck!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AsjJohnson In reply to ehxhfdl14 [2008-12-02 03:44:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, not really two thinner lines... Hmm... I think there's a link to the tutorial I used in the comments on the picture. Maybe that can explain. ^_^"
It's like, you know how you can use a lasso tool to select a region without actually making lines? So, it's similar to lassoing a really thin area, then using the paint brush to color in the region. Unselect, and you have a line.

ehxhfdl14 In reply to AsjJohnson [2008-12-02 04:45:24 +0000 UTC]

Maybe I'm retarded and can't see it, but could you link me to the tutorial?

O_O; I'm really slow at discovering tools and their uses on programs (I've just found filters and "special brushes" on Photoshop), so I really am clueless here... I think I'll go and look up a beginner's guide

(looks in pic comments) Ack. I thought I linked it. >_<
[link]
I think that's the first part of it.

Do you know about the pen tool? That's what you use for vectors, but you have to fill instead of stroke, or I don't think it's really a vector.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ehxhfdl14 In reply to AsjJohnson [2008-12-03 01:11:13 +0000 UTC]

Aah, no wonder the tool was unfamiliar. I have Photoshop Elements, (the version that came with the tablet- I'm cheap like that >_< and I don't think the pen tool exists on my version. But the tutorial was very interesting, I might invest in an upgrade?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AsjJohnson In reply to ehxhfdl14 [2008-12-03 05:25:26 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I got a tablet over a year ago... at least months earlier... Anyhow, it came with several CD's, and I was meaning to look at them at a later date. Now I don't have them anymore (a few days from a year ago, actually) because I was too lazy saving them for later. ^_^"

The pen tool is pretty good for making lines like the ones in my Ed's Return pic. That's if you stroke the lines. (although I think I blurred them some, so they would blend in a little better), but for doing the shape thing like I did in this picture, it's very tiring. (kind'a tiring for the normal method, too, which is why I've been scribbling around on my tablet lately. ^_^" )

It seems like all that effort is worth it, though.
If I do end up investing some cash on the full version, I'd definitely try doing a vector!

Thanks. ^_^ (this took so long... it'll be awhile before I do one like that again)
(I've recently found that PhotoShop has a replace color option that won't mess up anything, so now whenever I color something, I make a few adjustments to get what seems to look best)

Looks amazing for the first try I have nothing to complain about ^^ Is it based on a screenshot? ;]

The only thing I would change is the font ;] I would make it smaller and maybe change the angle a little instead of leaving the text vertical And maybe make it a little more transparent... That way the focus will be more on Al and less on the background

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AsjJohnson In reply to tsukishoujo [2008-07-13 19:18:15 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... the transparency suggestion sounds interesting.
The text is vertical? (looks at pic again) ...I thought it was italicized.
It's supposed to be an illustration from a fanfic of mine. I used a few references for Al's face, and I looked in the mirror for the hand.

tsukishoujo In reply to AsjJohnson [2008-07-28 09:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, it's my bad English I meant that now you can read it from up to down and it's easy to focus eyes on the text, which in turn distracts your attention from the vector itself - but if you flipped it a little, like 45 degrees, it'll become a little harder to read and at the same time, nothing will distract you from looking at the vector.

Anyways, it's a really good vector And you did great with the hand, I personally hate vectoring them

I guess using the pen tool several times before helped. ^_^" Just that, in PhotoShop the past, I'd always stroked the paths, deleted them, and then edit them with the eraser and brush tools. To do this, though, I had to discover Shape Layers - and I kept getting frustrated that I couldn't edit the lines.
At first I thought about tracing the text (which would have taken quite a while, I'd say), but then I thought, "oh, wait a minute... I think text is vectored, too..." so I didn't do anything to it. ^_^"
