Description
“They say you came to grow your beard. But you truly came because you don’t have a shadow.”“For once you are incorrect, Princess. I do have a shadow - a very unusual one.”
A tale of magic, deception, and love. Eclipsed.
Roughly based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Shadow.
Time goes by so quickly. D: Well, here, have this for 's book into movie contest. ...I didn't use any pose references this time, so that's why it doesn't look all that great. ^_^"
I thought I'd go with a weird verb for the title, partly to go with Tangled and Frozen, and partly because "The Shadow" would probably make people picture the radio show.
The movie would be kind'a like a mix between Aladdin and Frozen, maybe with a little Beauty and the Beast and Pinocchio in there, too.
Very basic outline of the original story: There's this guy whose shadow comes to life. The man regrows his shadow, but the Shadow can't grow a shadow of his own (though, the Shadow does become rich). The Shadow tries to switch the roles between him and his master, and they go to a spa. The man is a writer and an optimist, while the Shadow is a pessimist and doesn't think the man sees the world clearly. While at the spa, the Shadow meets this princess, who has really good intuition. The two end up getting married.
As for my idea, I was thinking that the Shadow not having a shadow is kind'a like not quite being human, and he can't feel/experience emotion the way humans do, so he wants to be human. But, since it doesn't seem to be possible, he gets kind'a bitter over time and tries to change roles with his master. He'd be a bit of a nicer guy in my version than in the original, though. Like the ice queen vs Elsa. There might be a duet between the Shadow and the man. Like something where they both sing about the other being blind or something. I mean like, a discussion about whether the world is a good place or a bad one, and each one thinking the other can't see the way the world really is. So, the Shadow meets the princess, and they gradually fall in love. And, the princess knows more than she lets on (which doesn't seem to be the case in the original (...unless she's a bad person), even though she's said to be really perceptive, to the point of thinking of it like a curse. So I wanted to expand on that a bit more).
Well... the picture's partly done. I was going to put the bottom of a building in the bg and draw the other guy, just standing there doing nothing, but, maybe it looks better without the guy just randomly standing there (though, he might've been writing something on a little pad or something). Ack. Forgot to draw in the Shadow's pocket watch chain. Well, I guess he has enough gold already.
I gave the princess a white velvet dress. ...because I wanted to give her a white dress, and a velvet dress. I liked the idea of her wearing white and being light colored, and I looked up a bunch of real life princess photos (and some Danish clothing, which... I couldn't figure out), and this one velvet dress looked pretty to me, so I wanted to draw something like it. And, I started out having the falling water in the fountains different, but I saw this one photo of a fountain that had a round sheet of water falling, and I liked how it looked, so I tried doing that. Um... I also looked up a bunch of stuff about spas.

hmm... maybe, in a way? It's based on "The Shadow". I think the man and the shadow look different enough to where people don't get them confused, but I think they would look a lot like twins (this is the sketch I did of them before drawing this pic sta.sh/02b7ry6lrqnr ). The real issue is about their roles, though, where the shadow wants to possess the man like the man once possessed him.

I really like your designs for the characters. They look authentically Disney. I especially like the princess, she's adorable! The concept sounds like it could make a great movie, also a plausible possibility given Disney seems to like Hans Christian Andersen stories.
Good luck!

That fountain is awesome.
I really, really like her dress. And the jewelry on both of them were a really nice touch. Her face is also very well drawn. She totally looks like a princess from a Disney film
I still can't get over how great that fountain looks.

thanks. ^_^ I'm not sure if Disney hadn't thought of using that story because of how it ends, or because they just hadn't thought of it (or maybe there's just been too many movies about shadows). In the story, the Shadow and the princess get married, but it's kind'a a bad ending, since the Shadow lies to her about who he is. And the other guy doesn't have a very happy ending. But the Snow Queen was pretty much completely rewritten by Disney, as far as I know, so it's not like it's impossible.

You're welcome. They might be already thinking about doing this story and jut have not gotten , think about how long they took to adapt the Snow queen. Also the story originally not having happy ending never stopped them from making "The Little Mermaid" or the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Has your cousin ever had issues with shadows?
I think I based his hair partly off of Aladdin and partly off of Egon from Ghost Busters or something. Though it changed several times in the first sketches I made. I hadn't thought of giving the boys facial hair until one of the last sketches, and I think that was because the pencil lines I made when trying to get his chin right was reminding me of a goatee (but he does have a beard in the story, so it makes sense - and I thought he looked a little too much like Stanley Ipkiss from the Mask the animated series without any facial hair). I thought of giving the boys light brown hair near the start (though the Shadow's hair is probably closer to medium brown). The eye shape was mainly based on anime, and the nose shape mostly just because I thought it looked pretty. Though, I also tried looking up what Danish people looked like, but it seemed a bit vague. But I think his clothes mostly came from Mozenrath and Kaiba. Those fancy long sleeve shirts are nice. The double-breasted-ness of the vest came from a Danish photo I saw online, though. ...maybe I've said too much. Oh well, that's everything I can think of about his looks. Well, he was also supposed to have kind'a dark-ish green-ish eyes, but I doubt the color's visible here.

I hadn't really thought of the poster thing until I had quite a bit done, and figured it'd be best to stay with what I had thought of. But, I think I was picturing it as looking like an establishing shot. I cropped it a bit, since I didn't fit in some stuff I was thinking of, but I'd thought of the bg as being a big deal. When I watch really closely, there's some pretty big establishing shots in Disney movies, like, there's a bunch of scenic shots in Aladdin that really show the scale of things (though all the sets are smaller in the Aladdin TV series). So I was thinking along those lines (but still close enough to see the characters).

Thanks. ^_^ She was supposed to have a braid around the back of her head, and some white gloves and blue/teal bracelets, but I thought it looked okay without them and I didn't feel like adding those things at the time, and thought I might add them if I had time after doing some other stuff. I kind'a wondered if her dress would look too much like a wedding dress, but I liked the idea of her wearing white because the Shadow tends to wear black.

This is so pretty~ I love especially the water *_* And the clothes, you did a great job with that! I love how the dress looks really velvety you managed to capture the fabric well. And this story sounds really interesting. I think this would make a really great disney movie (I would definitely want to watch it XD).
I also really like how you coloured the accessories~ like that orb thingie for the Shadow, it looks so pretty. and the colour of the princess' necklace contrasts the dress so nicely.

the lines through the water was done with Photoshop's... um, maybe Sprayed Strokes filter. I think that was it. (ack, I lost the lines for the guy overnight. Thought I'd saved that file, but I guess I didn't think to. Photoshop tends to want to close when I don't click save) But I did the lines through the yellow ripply stuff in the front of the pool with the smudge tool, since I couldn't get the filter to work for its layer.
For the dress, I used the 46px spatter brush with some modified settings. I'd draw lines of light-colored dots along the edges and areas that should be light, and use the same brush as the eraser to blend it in better (but I left in some noticeable lines because I figured velvet does that). And then I used a darker brush and did the same in the shadowy areas.
You can find The Shadow online if you want. I found it in more than one place, translated slightly differently. Though, it tends to sound like not everything's explained. Like it doesn't tell everything in quite enough detail. But maybe that's just the way the story is. The story ends on a bit of a bad note, but that doesn't mean stuff based on it has to. I think there was also a play that was based on the story with some changes, but I couldn't find it online.
Hm, I think it's a broach or cloakpin. I did the jewels similar to how Aladdin does it, with a spot of white in the direction of the sun, and a bright color opposite that (which is from the light reflecting off the bottom of the jewel). I noticed similar jewels in Cinderella, but they didn't have as many special effects for them. When I look at the image desaturated, her jewelry looks kind'a dark to me, but perhaps that helps what you say about contrast. At one point, I moved a copy of the silver part of her necklace away from her, and it looks different then. I'd added little reflections from stuff around it, and by itself, it looks pink, yellow, and blue.

thanks. ^_^ I spent too much time on the fountain and not enough on the characters. :P For the guy, I didn't have much time left, so I worked out a sketch, added color, and then stroked the colors to make the lines. It's a bit sloppy, but I was drawing him 2x size in a different document, so it's not too noticeable.

thanks. I don't think I have too good a record with clothing, actually. For the longest time, whenever I'd draw clothes on someone, it'd either be something plain like a t-shirt or turtleneck (the Aladdin pic's outfits completely belong to Disney), and I tend to just put little y shapes on elbows and knees instead of real wrinkles. But my default dress clothing seems to be a bit nicer than t-shirts (I think I might've drawn this sketch without looking at anything: fav.me/d7tgb54 ), plus I tried looking for Danish type outfits online (which, I'm not sure how much I got out of that) and princess outfits, as well as looked at some Disney princes and princesses. And I think some of the stuff I noticed when drawing that Aladdin pic came to mind when drawing this one, like some lines in the guy's pant legs and boots. I started out thinking about drawing/coloring the characters in a similar way to that pic, since it seemed to turn out nice there, but I ended up doing it a bit differently (mostly due to time, since it took like a day to draw each section of clothing on the Aladdin pic). And I didn't use nearly as many references as for the Aladdin pic. The wrinkles in his clothing is pretty simplistic because of that.
