"Now I'm the Royal Vizier, and I can do whatever. I. want."
Instead of running away at the beginning of the Aladdin movie, Jasmine desides to cross dress.
Well, she did it in one episode of the series. Too bad Mozenrath hadn't seen her in that episode. It probably would've broken his brain.

The idea was that Jasmine used her whip to grab Jafar's clothes (leaving Jafar a bit clueless as to where they've gone). She's wearing her hair up because that's how she wears it when she's being mischievous. (by the way, I read a little on whip anatomy when drawing the whip. Though it's mainly referenced from the series)

Why must I always wait until the last moment on these things? :/
It's the first time I used a 3px brush for quite awhile. I'd changed to using a 5px brush for pictures because I felt it could give more variety on width and the opacity's more uniform, but the lineart tends to be quite thick that way. The lineart for this is a bit sketchy, but I also did a lot of erasing to keep the lines in shape. So the lines are thinner, and are semi-transparent in spots.
One of the last things I did was draw and color the turban (...and then I motion blurred it). It was really hard for me to figure out the hangy part of it. I think I did most of the background as a way of procrastinating doing the final design of the turban (it seems I procrastinated a lot, because there's a lot in the bg). I finally got something that looked halfway good, though I think the turban looks like an octopus or something now (but that might be a good thing, if it reminds me of a disney sea creature that was based on spinning fabric).
The background is based on the hallway outside of Jasmine's room. I watched the first movie again, with an eye for backgrounds, and took over 300 screenshots (when the bg changes), and I found that there's not many hallways shown. ...I might should've just taken one of the hallways from the series. (I did finally find a part of the movie that shows the opposite wall of Aladdin's place, though. I'll be looking back at that later)
Did you ever notice how incredibly skinny Jafar is? I didn't really notice until I tried drawing him. The main reference for him was that little scene where he thinks he has the lamp and then finds he doesn't.
I used disneyscreencaps.com for reference for Jafar's clothes (and a little for Jafar, and to check his height against Jasmine). That site has a huge amount of screenshots, though it's hard to find what I'm looking for because there's so many. They're a little better quality than the DVD I have, though.
After finishing up the bg, I copied and merged some layers, and added noise to the walls, while using Photoshop's mixer brush to put stripes in the gold trim, doorway, and pillar. The floor was pretty rushed. I did find that I could make quick reflections using Distort, though. I may or may not later make better squiggly things in the floor. I did them super fast, last minute.
I recorded myself spinning a keychain flashlight for reference for Jasmine's hand (since it seems I have trouble positioning my hand the right way unless I'm spinning something). I also looked back at the video when drawing the turban (though it didn't help much for the hangy thing, and I couldn't find anything similiar enough to it to spin on my finger. The thought of a girl's skirt spinning came to mind, but looking up images of that didn't help all that much either). I also noticed that my wrist didn't seem to bend while spinning, but I instead seemed to keep balance from my elbow (and possibly shoulder) and my shirt sleeve moved. So when I motion blurred stuff, I tried to do it that way.
Here's part of the beginning sketch for the picture. After I did it, I redrew it (and tried looking in the mirror to see how the pose would look), before scanning it and modifying it with references of Jasmine. (The Jafar sketch wasn't pretty enough to show. I hadn't really drawn him before and couldn't draw him without references)
If I think people would be interested, I might upload some close-up shots of things. It always seems like there's some details in pictures that aren't really visible unless the image is viewed at 200%. And I saved this at 50%.

It made second place. ^_^ here's a journal entry mentioning the entries and places:  fav.me/d7eu46l

Completely awesome!  The best part is Jafar in the background with that bemused look on his face.  Love the triumphant smirk Jasmine has, and the whip too is a great added touch.  Her having Jafar's staff would be too predictable, so I think the whip gives the pic more tangible depth. The hall is fabulous, and of course as always every last iota ROCKS!!  Great job again...not that that is a surprise or anything!

Your picture looks nice, too, by the way. You made her eyes really pretty, and even found a way to fit the turban on her head. :P I started out with a bg that was more red-ish, but something was off about it, so I changed the lighting. The red bg works well with yours, though.

Whoa, the sheer amount of steps you undertook to make this piece is mind-boggling and impressive!!! I love how it turned out--Jasmine looks good and a little spunky, I like how she's twirling Jafar's turban on her finger, and Jafar just got out of the bath. I like how he's not wearing slippers or anything and is just walking around in his birthday suit under the towel. XD He looks a little befuddled but not sputtering in impotent rage, so thank you for that. ^^

"Did you ever notice how incredibly skinny Jafar is? I didn't really notice until I tried drawing him. The main reference for him was that little scene where he thinks he has the lamp and then finds he doesn't."

Whenever I see that scene, I think Jafar looks like a lizard or a small snake since he's so narrow and elongated. He also has a small-ish forehead--I guess because how high his eyebrows are on his head so whether that's intentional or not, he looks more reptilian than human, and to me, more aesthetically pleasing. : ) You captured his eyebrows well here. ^^

You drew him super-well, it's hard to tell that it's your first time drawing him! ^^ ^^

AsjJohnson In reply to XbinaryBrwnfanartist [2014-04-02 19:07:19 +0000 UTC]

There wasn't really too many steps (my bullets represent random things I want to say, not steps :P). It was mainly, "I wanna draw them in a hallway. Okay, I've drawn them, now about that hallway... Well, here's a hallway in the movie. I'll make it that one. Oh, there's columns at the corners, better add one. Now everything looks annoyingly 3D computer-ish, I should add some texture stuff."
If I'd thought of it sooner, I might would've tried adding a little puddle of water close to Jafar's feet or a little trail of water, to show that he just got out.
I pictured Jafar just thinking, "...I don't see my clothes anywhere," and being a bit confused about where they'd be and how he'll get to some without everyone seeing him undressed.

I'm not certain it's my absolute first time drawing him or not, but I know I'd never focused on getting his features right before. So if I've drawn him before, it would've been a quick sketch that doesn't look much like him. (when I drew Cassim, I had said it was my first time drawing him, but then I later remembered I'd drawn him before, but without really focusing on what he looked like)
Hm... I guess I'd thought of Jafar as looking a little thin and a bit cartoonish in that scene, but I hadn't really thought of him looking snake-like (but that would fit with the end of the movie). More like... between the old man and himself, or something. But when I started really looking at him for reference for the pic, I couldn't help but see how incredibly thin his legs are, with little tiny muscles. I thought he looked a lot like a skeleton then. One with big hands and feet. (and even in his normal clothes, the black sleeves are so thin) I tried making him look really bony-like in my pic, though I probably didn't get him quite as thin as in the movie (I'm not sure how many times I'd edited the sketch to make him thinner). I tried making his elbow bigger than his arm, and I drew circles for the joints of his fingers while sketching his hands.

No, I mean like the 3px brush, motion blur, that stuff. ^^ Like with the techniques, not the ideas or concept, or something. oO

Yay for texture! ^^ ^^ Ooh, a puddle of water would have been awesome, but the towel works well enough. ^^ And  if there was water then his tufts of hair would have to be wet if there was a puddle, or something. ^^ It looks here like he already dried off.

Hehe, he has a towel, he's totally dressed.. XD But yeah, I get what you mean. That would be embarrassing for him to be seen without his robes in the palace. XD

I'm glad that you worked hard on drawing his features. ^^ Either way, it looks great! ^^

Oh yeah, definitely thin and cartoonish, I agree. ^^ Like how a lot of people watch YouTube videos of kittens and puppies, I like watching videos of snakes and lizards, and also whenever there's an anthropomorphized lizard in Disney, they're drawn really tall and skinny in comparison to the rest of the characters, like the mice. So that's where that came from. ^^

Yeah, yeah, he doesn't have much muscle on him for sure, with his really thin legs and arms. I guess the black sleeves are so thin because they're skin-tight. He's got his puffy red shirt and a form-fitting black shirt underneath. : D  That's cool that you kept on editing the sketch to make him thinner. : ) Ooh yeah, I like how you made his elbow bigger than his arm, that does show the thinness better. : D Well done again! ^^ Now finally, I'm again inspired!!

I donno, I guess I just didn't think about 'steps' so much as just doing stuff. I just kind of thought of what I wanted it to look like and messed around with it until it looked kind of like that. But I guess I did do several things.

Yeah, that was one reason I didn't try adding water when I'd thought of it, since I wasn't sure how to make him look 'wet' (I would've had to spend time experimenting with it, as well as experimenting with how to draw water on the floor).

It seems kind of unusual for people to prefer reptiles. I guess I find snakes cute, especially the small ones, but I usually don't like drawn reptile-people. ...maybe it's because they usually have a lot of lines, so their scales might resemble wrinkles too much to me or something (or maybe because they're just different from humans, not being mammals, so it bothers me a little bit to see a lizard person or something). I guess they're probably shown as tall and skinny partly because snakes have long, skinny bodies, and partly because they don't have a bunch of fur to fill them out. Like when you see a fluffy cat get soaked, it looks skinny, too. Hmm... though, I'm not sure how many lizard characters I've seen from Disney. I guess there was a lizard in Alice and Wonderland... he looked okay to me. I guess there's the Princess and the Frog movie, too.

Jafar's red shirt and cape thing totally hides how skinny he is from me. I guess loose clothing can work both ways, either hiding how fat someone is or how skinny someone is. Loose clothing is awesome. Everyone should wear loose clothes. ...It just makes it harder to figure out how to draw people. Jafar probably would've looked way off if I hadn't had that one scene to go by.

Ooh whoops, my bad!! I mistook some of your explanation of technique as steps, but yeah, that wasn't to imply that your process wasn't more experimental. OO

Yeah, true, it would be tricky to make Jafar look wet, oO And yeah, water on the floor is hard. Water is hard to draw in general, lol. ^^

I guess it is unusual. OO I admire them for their beauty and how a lot of them are introspective, and it's fun to share your heat with them. ^^
Ooh, that's great that you find snakes and especially small snakes cute, too. : DD Ooh yeah, you're right, they do have a lot of lines that could look like wrinkles. I guess it could be unsettling to combine them with a human-- oO They do have different eyes and stuff, and snakes can't close their eyes so they just stare at you al day.

Ooh yeah, true, they don't have fur to make them look pudgier. Oo Interesting how a soaked cat also looks thin. OO Yep, there's Bill the Lizard in Alice and Wonderland, and he made another appearance in The Great Mouse Detective. Gators look kind of different because they're burlier, but I guess it's the same kind of elongated body and of course the eyes--ooh yeah, crocs can't close their eyes, I can't remember if gators can't either.

Yep, yep, he's got to look imposing, he is the Royal Vizier. : D Ooh true, I guess loose clothing can hide all sorts of body types. : D That would be interesting, if everyone wore loose clothes. Oo : D It was nice to see his arms and legs without clothes, it shows him without pretense for a few moments--he also tends to move quicker with less clothes on. : )

first I thought of an AU idea. "When her father died ten years ago, the rule of the kingdom fell to the next, of age, male heir. Despite this, she remained close to the ruling family, and earned the position of Royal Vizier at a young age. However, as time passes, she becomes more and more bitter toward the one sitting on the throne. She wants what she feels is rightfully hers, and by learning magic and using her powerful staff, she may get what she wants." (I also planned out her royal vizier outfit .) But then I found out it wouldn't count for the contest, so I thought of this: "Jasmine steals Jafar’s clothes one day (has turban in hand with whip around it), thinking ‘Now I’m the Royal Vizier and I can do anything I want.’ In the bg, Jafar might be sticking his head out a door, wearing a fluffy red towel and trying to figure out where his clothing went to." ...It seems the towel to pink over time, and I forgot that I had thought of titling it Mischievous Princess. ...I think I like that title more than Mischievous Jasmine. I think I'll change it.

Like other Aladdin characters, she'll find that a change of clothing doesn't amount to much. :P
"Wha?" the sultan says in surprise when seeing her awhile later. "Jasmine! What are you doing in Jafar’s clothes?!" The sultan begins to sound distressed. "He’s been searching everywhere, in nothing but a towel. ...It’s rather funny, actually." He clears his throat, then orders, "Jasmine, return my vizier’s clothing at once."
(Jafar, on the other hand, would whine about her being too fat and stretching the fabric)
