Description
Entry for the Disney-club 's Villain's Gone Good contest, 2014. ^_^Mozenrath saving Aladdin from falling to his death. It's based on a fic idea of mine. Mozenrath and Aladdin have to work together to do something, and then it's over and they don't have to put up with one another any longer. But then the ground caves in under Aladdin's feet and Mozenrath grabs his arm without thinking about it. So, they're both surprised. But then, after Mozenrath has a second or two to realize the situation, instead of letting go, he pulls Aladdin up. Perhaps Mozenrath had changed his mind about Aladdin after the time they spent together. It's a little open-ended about what it means, but it's a step in the right direction.
I thought about making a Beauty and the Beast pic and something based on one of my Aladdin fic ideas, but I just couldn't seem to get into the Gaston pic (and I'd already thought of what would be in it and came up with a little story to explain how it got there), and there's just too many Mozenrath doing something good moments in my fic ideas and none of them seemed important enough (I thought of Mozenrath helping to strategize at the palace, Mozenrath playing Checkers against Carpet, Jasmine on Carpet holding her hand out to Mozenrath and him taking it).
So, about two weeks ago, I sketched this possible idea asjjohnson.deviantart.com/art/…, and ended up liking it enough to play around with color and see what happens.
I wanted to try painting on top of the sketch, but what I started didn't look quite right, so I re-started it with some lines. Part of the time I would start with some light lineart and modify it after I added shading, and part of the time I would start with color and shading and then add the lineart afterward and adjust the color/shading. After I did Mozenrath's head and arms, I realized I kind of needed to fix their poses, so I took some photos of myself in their poses and sketched out the poses (trying to keep Mozenrath's head and arms the same). So, their poses and hands are based strongly on my photos, and Mozenrath's pants and hangy thing's folds are mostly based on my photos (I also took a photo of myself with a hand-towel tied around my waist with a belt/scarf thing). For Mozenrath's hair, I did a few versions of it, before looking at my own hair and sketching a lock of my hair on paper a few times, then re-doing his hair based on what I noticed about mine. For Mozenrath's boots, I searched for "leather boots" and "Persian boots" in Bing images, but tried not to directly reference any image in particular, but more of an overall look/feel (while also trying to keep it looking the way the boots do in Aladdin). For the gauntlet, I referenced my drawn boots. For Aladdin's upper body, I referenced the photo of myself - ...and then got a drawing book off my bookcase, drew in a lot of muscles, and some bones, then made some lineart based on where the muscles are. I also glanced at some Aladdin screenshots sometimes, like to check the length of Mozenrath's hangy thing, where the edges of his cape and upper part of his hangy thing overlap, how Aladdin's hair looks (I guess I worked on Aladdin's hair a bit, too, but just to try making the sketch of it look more like his hair), and how Aladdin's clothes look. I didn't look at anything for Mozenrath's turban jewel (I wanted to, but it was very close to the deadline, so I just marked around on it and I don't think it turned out too badly). ...sorry about the badly done stuff. I shaded Mozenrath's gauntlet, finished shading Mozenrath's left hand and Aladdin's body, did Aladdin's clothes, Mozenrath's gorget/shoulderplate thing, neck, collar, jewel, and the background today, so those things are kind of ugly not as good as I'd of liked them to be. ^_^" There was also several little modifications I'd thought of doing, but didn't think they were very important (...though I really should've added the seam to Mozenrath's pants). But I like how the detail around the edge of his gauntlet came out, and the jewel doesn't look too bad. ...sorry if their faces look ugly don't look exactly right...
there. I edited the description to include reference info and edit a few words. (wonders if I should add the link to the Sta.Sh folder where I added several preview images)

I don't know if many people know this, but Mozenrath was actually meant to be Al's brother.

I've heard it as a rumor for a possible third movie that didn't happen (I think pretty much everyone's heard the rumor, but I haven't seen proof that the possible movie plot is true). Since the rumored movie never happened, it doesn't really mean anything. Everyone has their own opinions.
I'm of the opinion that they're not at all related (he looks more like Jasmine than Aladdin anyhow). But I do enjoy reading fanfics where they're brothers. It's an interesting AU.

I do think it's possible Moze was going to turn good if the series had continued, though. He and Aladdin were on the same side in his last two episodes, and though they were still enemies it seems like the start of something. Like how Sadira turned good.

Cool art! I love particularly the colours and the shading!
I was never familiar with Mozenrath's character. He appears in the Aladdin's animated series, right? He seems like an interesting character - yet another reason for me to catching up with Aladdin's spinoffs. ^^

Thanks. ^_^
Yeah, he's in nine episodes of the TV series. ^_^ "The Citadel" is his intro episode.
He's kind'a an annoying, whiny brat, but after I'd happened across an interesting fanfic about him a few years ago, I couldn't get enough of the idea of him being redeemed in some way.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, he definitely seem complex and interesting, from what I see in your fanart, along with other artists'. I will have to take a look at those episodes!

I think I read somewhere that originally Mozenrath and Aladdin were actually brothers, but during the production that idea was scrapped.

I heard that had been one possible idea for the third movie.
But, since they didn't have that happen in that movie, I don't believe they're brothers - the possibility makes some cool fanfics, though. (but, the way I think of Aladdin, it's like each piece has its own continuum or world or dimension. So, in the original Aladdin movie, I think Aladdin and Jasmine got married at the end. But in the second movie and connected series, everything in the first movie happened, but the romantic ending scene was more of an engagement annoucement or celebration. And in both of those worlds, Aladdin's father isn't Cassim or the King of Thieves at all.)
...I wonder if Mozenrath will be mentioned in the new Aladdin movie.

I have this image in my head of the conversation following this
Aladdin: why did you save me?
Mozenrath: being your enemy is the only real character I have in this show

I love this picture!! The detail is gorgeous, you really did an amazing job! Mozenrath looks so surprised to have caught Aladdin, like he originally wasn't going to but some instinct or something kicked in and he just couldn't let him. I don't know, I'm rambling. Wonderful job though!

This is excellent. I can't believe I missed all this stuff... but I've been kind of absent for a year or two now. I suppose Aladdin's face looks slightly more realistic in this one, but more like he does -in the show- in the other. It shows you used good references, the hand positions are very believable and you can feel the weight and tension in it. I kind of love the colouring too.

There was a slight mistake with their hands. When coloring in Mozenrath's hands, I'd drawn a little bit over top of Aladdin's arm, with the intention of removing the extra later on, but I forgot to do it. So Aladdin's arm appears slightly thinner than it was supposed to in that area. It's one of a list of things I'd been wanting to adjust at some point. Along with adding the top part of the toe of Mozenrath's boots (which I totally forgot), adding a thumbnail to Aladdin's lower arm, and redoing the coloring of their eyebrows (Mozenrath's eyebrows is colored in an obsolete way that I'd colored his hair at one point, and I never got around to truly coloring in Aladdin's eyebrows).
I experimented with coloring/shading for the pic. I started out trying to make it lineart-less, but when I tried making Mozenrath's face that way, it just looked kind'a creepy. So I made the lines thin and didn't 'finalize' them, but instead kind of went back and forth between lines and shading while making it. So, for some of the large areas, like Aladdin's pants, I started drawing big shading lines and adjusted them until it looked reasonably good and then added some lineart afterward (and then adjusted the shading slightly to match up better). For the fabric draping around Mozenrath's neck, I started out trying to get some pretty lines, and then modified them a bit after adding shading.

Love the art! Love the concept! I'm an unabashed Moze x Al fanfiction lover. Anytime these two rivals are written (or drawn) as leads alongside each other, I'm absolutely tickled. Especially when it's done so well

I have quite a few Aladdin fic ideas, most about Mozenrath, and several to do with both him and Aladdin (in a non-romantic way). ...I really need to work on getting them written. There's one idea I particularly like where they get to be quite close. And there's a few ideas where Aladdin and Mozenrath are main characters but are doing different things. But, my main and probably to-be longest fic doesn't even directly involve Aladdin until the sequel/second part. Though, the little idea this pic's based on involves them being forced to work together. If you're curious, I love talking about my fic ideas (unfortunately, it's easier for me to talk about them than to write them).

It's a great idea to pair these two up. It gives way to lots of character development. I mean, Razoul did come to admire and respect Aladdin to a degree and Aladdin learned to put up with him.

The last two Mozenrath episodes did kind of pair them up, but in the second to last Mozenrath spent most of the time hiding, and the last had the two arguing up to the end. But, you know what they say, third time's the charm.
The episode with Razoul was neat. ^_^

Hey, is it true that Mosenrath and Aladdin were originally suppose to be brothers or is that just a rumor?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AsjJohnson In reply to pulser375 [2014-06-11 23:25:46 +0000 UTC]
I don't think I've seen anything that proves it's true. I think it's probably just a rumor. It may have been true that Mozenrath was thought of as being a villain in the third movie (and fans just jumped to conclusions), but I'm not 100% certain of that, either.
But, even if the brother rumor was true, I personally wouldn't believe they're brothers unless I saw it on TV. Because there's been a lot of ideas for the first movie, and probably the other movies and the series, that were changed later. Like Aladdin living with his mother being changed to his mother being dead (I think you can still see the woman in one scene, but as a sweet townswoman). It's fact that Aladdin did not live with his mother, despite it being the original idea. So, even if the brother rumor was true, it doesn't mean much.
It makes great fanfic reading material, though. There's a lot of really good fanfics where Mozenrath has amnesia or was brainwashed or something, and finds out he's not who he thinks he is.

I could definitely picture something like this coming out of the whole "Mozenrath is Aladdin's brother" rumor and this would be one of Mozenrath's change of heart moments.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AsjJohnson In reply to ToonEGuy [2014-06-07 20:25:31 +0000 UTC]
Perhaps. There's some fanfictions where they turn out to be brothers. They're usually fun to read. Finding out they're brothers probably would have Aladdin acting nicer to Mozenrath, but I'm not sure how or if it would change the way Mozenrath feels about Aladdin. He's usually nicer to Aladdin in the fics, though.
But in the idea of mine that the picture's based on, it's more about them just getting used to each other from having to work together. My fic ideas tend to keep them unrelated, but have other things that make them friendly with each other.

I am amazed at how detailed this is! You've done a great job, and I don't think their faces look ugly at all. I'll have to look up who Mozenrath is now--I don't think I've heard of him before.

AsjJohnson In reply to Riorlyne [2014-06-01 18:29:57 +0000 UTC]
thanks. ^_^ Some people I showed it to thought their faces looked kind of strange, so I wasn't sure. The first try at shading/coloring/painting Mozenrath's face turned out weird, so when I re-did it I wasn't sure if it was all the way fixed or not.
Mozenrath's in nine episodes of the Aladdin TV series. He's somewhat compared with Aladdin and Jafar in the series. In his first episode, he's first seen stealing a pear from the marketplace and taking a bite before tossing it away (which is kind of similar to something Aladdin did with an apple in the original movie). He has a magic glove and wants to rule all seven deserts, and Iago refers to him as Jafar Jr. when he talks like that. He's kind of a spoiled brat and doesn't care about others, but he's also a fast thinker and can come up with really good plans, but he's horrible at thinking on his feet and tends to help defeat himself by panicking. He also likes to brag a little too much. When meeting Aladdin for the first time, Mozenrath politely introduces himself as the ruler of the distant land of-, and is interrupted by Aladdin not believing him. Mozenrath offers to pay Aladdin for a small job he needs done, and Aladdin outright refuses, before even being told what that job is. They dislike each other ever since. But they do have similar goals in the last two episodes he's in.
