Description
Entry for the Disney-club 's Villain's Gone Good contest, 2014. ^_^Mozenrath saving Aladdin from falling to his death. It's based on a fic idea of mine. Mozenrath and Aladdin have to work together to do something, and then it's over and they don't have to put up with one another any longer. But then the ground caves in under Aladdin's feet and Mozenrath grabs his arm without thinking about it. So, they're both surprised. But then, after Mozenrath has a second or two to realize the situation, instead of letting go, he pulls Aladdin up. Perhaps Mozenrath had changed his mind about Aladdin after the time they spent together. It's a little open-ended about what it means, but it's a step in the right direction.
I thought about making a Beauty and the Beast pic and something based on one of my Aladdin fic ideas, but I just couldn't seem to get into the Gaston pic (and I'd already thought of what would be in it and came up with a little story to explain how it got there), and there's just too many Mozenrath doing something good moments in my fic ideas and none of them seemed important enough (I thought of Mozenrath helping to strategize at the palace, Mozenrath playing Checkers against Carpet, Jasmine on Carpet holding her hand out to Mozenrath and him taking it).
So, about two weeks ago, I sketched this possible idea asjjohnson.deviantart.com/art/…, and ended up liking it enough to play around with color and see what happens.
I wanted to try painting on top of the sketch, but what I started didn't look quite right, so I re-started it with some lines. Part of the time I would start with some light lineart and modify it after I added shading, and part of the time I would start with color and shading and then add the lineart afterward and adjust the color/shading. After I did Mozenrath's head and arms, I realized I kind of needed to fix their poses, so I took some photos of myself in their poses and sketched out the poses (trying to keep Mozenrath's head and arms the same). So, their poses and hands are based strongly on my photos, and Mozenrath's pants and hangy thing's folds are mostly based on my photos (I also took a photo of myself with a hand-towel tied around my waist with a belt/scarf thing). For Mozenrath's hair, I did a few versions of it, before looking at my own hair and sketching a lock of my hair on paper a few times, then re-doing his hair based on what I noticed about mine. For Mozenrath's boots, I searched for "leather boots" and "Persian boots" in Bing images, but tried not to directly reference any image in particular, but more of an overall look/feel (while also trying to keep it looking the way the boots do in Aladdin). For the gauntlet, I referenced my drawn boots. For Aladdin's upper body, I referenced the photo of myself - ...and then got a drawing book off my bookcase, drew in a lot of muscles, and some bones, then made some lineart based on where the muscles are. I also glanced at some Aladdin screenshots sometimes, like to check the length of Mozenrath's hangy thing, where the edges of his cape and upper part of his hangy thing overlap, how Aladdin's hair looks (I guess I worked on Aladdin's hair a bit, too, but just to try making the sketch of it look more like his hair), and how Aladdin's clothes look. I didn't look at anything for Mozenrath's turban jewel (I wanted to, but it was very close to the deadline, so I just marked around on it and I don't think it turned out too badly). ...sorry about the badly done stuff. I shaded Mozenrath's gauntlet, finished shading Mozenrath's left hand and Aladdin's body, did Aladdin's clothes, Mozenrath's gorget/shoulderplate thing, neck, collar, jewel, and the background today, so those things are kind of ugly not as good as I'd of liked them to be. ^_^" There was also several little modifications I'd thought of doing, but didn't think they were very important (...though I really should've added the seam to Mozenrath's pants). But I like how the detail around the edge of his gauntlet came out, and the jewel doesn't look too bad. ...sorry if their faces look ugly don't look exactly right...
there. I edited the description to include reference info and edit a few words. (wonders if I should add the link to the Sta.Sh folder where I added several preview images)

thanks. ^_^ I tried to do this pic different from what I usually do. I tried to make it more detailed than the mother's day one by focusing more on the shading and not so much on lineart, because I usually make lineart first and then I have to color within the lines. (the sketch started out like this, by the way sta.sh/0116ri4izr26 )

no they don't D: But I guess I kind of thought Mozenrath's expression was kind of cute, so that might be the main reason I went back over it. That version was after I decided to color it, and had adjusted the colors to the final ones.
hmm... looking back at my early layers for that pic, I guess that's more like the third or fourth sketch. I kind of forgot about that. I'd traced over it a few times and adjusted a few things.
