Description Entry for the Disney-club 's Villain's Gone Good contest, 2014. ^_^

Mozenrath saving Aladdin from falling to his death. It's based on a fic idea of mine. Mozenrath and Aladdin have to work together to do something, and then it's over and they don't have to put up with one another any longer. But then the ground caves in under Aladdin's feet and Mozenrath grabs his arm without thinking about it. So, they're both surprised. But then, after Mozenrath has a second or two to realize the situation, instead of letting go, he pulls Aladdin up. Perhaps Mozenrath had changed his mind about Aladdin after the time they spent together. It's a little open-ended about what it means, but it's a step in the right direction.

I thought about making a Beauty and the Beast pic and something based on one of my Aladdin fic ideas, but I just couldn't seem to get into the Gaston pic (and I'd already thought of what would be in it and came up with a little story to explain how it got there), and there's just too many Mozenrath doing something good moments in my fic ideas and none of them seemed important enough (I thought of Mozenrath helping to strategize at the palace, Mozenrath playing Checkers against Carpet, Jasmine on Carpet holding her hand out to Mozenrath and him taking it).

So, about two weeks ago, I sketched this possible idea asjjohnson.deviantart.com/art/…, and ended up liking it enough to play around with color and see what happens.
I wanted to try painting on top of the sketch, but what I started didn't look quite right, so I re-started it with some lines. Part of the time I would start with some light lineart and modify it after I added shading, and part of the time I would start with color and shading and then add the lineart afterward and adjust the color/shading. After I did Mozenrath's head and arms, I realized I kind of needed to fix their poses, so I took some photos of myself in their poses and sketched out the poses (trying to keep Mozenrath's head and arms the same). So, their poses and hands are based strongly on my photos, and Mozenrath's pants and hangy thing's folds are mostly based on my photos (I also took a photo of myself with a hand-towel tied around my waist with a belt/scarf thing). For Mozenrath's hair, I did a few versions of it, before looking at my own hair and sketching a lock of my hair on paper a few times, then re-doing his hair based on what I noticed about mine. For Mozenrath's boots, I searched for "leather boots" and "Persian boots" in Bing images, but tried not to directly reference any image in particular, but more of an overall look/feel (while also trying to keep it looking the way the boots do in Aladdin). For the gauntlet, I referenced my drawn boots. For Aladdin's upper body, I referenced the photo of myself - ...and then got a drawing book off my bookcase, drew in a lot of muscles, and some bones, then made some lineart based on where the muscles are. I also glanced at some Aladdin screenshots sometimes, like to check the length of Mozenrath's hangy thing, where the edges of his cape and upper part of his hangy thing overlap, how Aladdin's hair looks (I guess I worked on Aladdin's hair a bit, too, but just to try making the sketch of it look more like his hair), and how Aladdin's clothes look. I didn't look at anything for Mozenrath's turban jewel (I wanted to, but it was very close to the deadline, so I just marked around on it and I don't think it turned out too badly). ...sorry about the badly done stuff. I shaded Mozenrath's gauntlet, finished shading Mozenrath's left hand and Aladdin's body, did Aladdin's clothes, Mozenrath's gorget/shoulderplate thing, neck, collar, jewel, and the background today, so those things are kind of ugly not as good as I'd of liked them to be. ^_^" There was also several little modifications I'd thought of doing, but didn't think they were very important (...though I really should've added the seam to Mozenrath's pants). But I like how the detail around the edge of his gauntlet came out, and the jewel doesn't look too bad. ...sorry if their faces look ugly don't look exactly right...

there. I edited the description to include reference info and edit a few words. (wonders if I should add the link to the Sta.Sh folder where I added several preview images)

heh, yeah. Kuzco did kind of remind me of Mozenrath in a way, only younger and even more melodramatic.

Faces do not look ugly and the detail around the "hands grasping" is a strong point! I also like the rocks giving away to really add the moment to the scene. I like it

thanks. ^_^ Some people I showed it to seemed to think their faces looked kind of weird, so I wasn't really sure about it. Hm, I think I forgot to mask off a little around the hands, where part of Mozenrath's hands overlap Aladdin's arm that shouldn't. But it's not too noticeable.

Hahaha the one down fall to posting it online I've seen is there's always at least one correction that you want to make after it's already out there.

AsjJohnson In reply to thelowsAint [2014-06-02 14:08:16 +0000 UTC]

well, in this case, it's more like a dozen corrections. But most of it was the time issue (drawing Mozenrath's shirt so he wouldn't be a bunch of floating limbs, and drawing Aladdin's legs/pants, was more important). I might go back and touch things up later just because I'd like to, but I usually don't feel like working even more on one of these time constraint pics. But those pics do tend to turn out the best. Otherwise I would've spent a few months on it or longer, trying to think of what else I could do to it before submitting it.

Hahaha that's how I felt about my entry....multiple things I would have like to fix and wanting more time with it. I like the idea I had, but now it's done and I don't feel there's any reason to back to it, maybe someday. Make sure to post it again if you mess around with it anymore

I guess I tend to feel my contest things are both finished and unfinished at the same time. So I guess that's what it is. But I think this one feels a little more unfinished because I did kind of write a list of things not to forget to do. If I fix the things about it, I might replace the image file instead of upload a new deviation, and maybe switch out the current image to a scraps deviation. Things like finishing drawing eyebrows, adding the upper part of the curl of Mozenrath's boots, adding the seams on Mozenrath's pant legs, and adding Aladdin's thumbnail, won't be too noticeable except to me. Little things that would make me feel better about it.

thanks. ^_^ There was a time in the series where Mozenrath was hanging from the edge of the palace and Aladdin offered to help him up (which was actually rather nice for Aladdin). Mozenrath seemed kind of grateful for the help, until it came to mind that he could blast at Aladdin close-range. ...before he was all the way pulled up. Mozenrath really should think through those things.

You're welcome. I think I remember that episode: The black sand right?

I'm not surprised Aladdin would try to help Mozenrath, he is a Disney hero after all =3 Though it's nice to see Mozenrath surprisingly return the favor XD

AsjJohnson In reply to FaPingMulan [2014-06-02 14:23:36 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that episode. I agree Aladdin's nice, but in the series he tends to seem kind of uncaring towards people he dislikes. Like, when they first met, Mozenrath said something that hinted he wouldn't have cared if someone (people Aladdin likes) was hurt, Aladdin was pretty rude to him and refused to help him at all. And at the end of the Book of Khartoum, it's so sad about Mozenrath, Khartoum took his powers, his home is gone, and he's sitting in the corner and says he's lost everything. But Aladdin just glares at him, and then heads home (and even before that, when Khartoum was trying to kill Mozenrath, Aladdin tried to take Genie and go home, but Genie didn't seem to notice what Aladdin was saying and assumed Aladdin would want to stop Khartoum. Aladdin also seems to not forgive someone unless they save either his life or one of his friends', like Iago in the second movie and Sadira in that episode where Aladdin doesn't believe she could change. I might be forgetting times that would prove this wrong, or taking things to extremes, but if Aladdin's like that in the series, then it's a little surprising he was willing to help Mozenrath that time. Sometimes when I get a Mozenrath fic idea, getting Aladdin to accept/forgive him is a big thing.

FaPingMulan In reply to AsjJohnson [2014-06-02 14:51:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes I remember those too. And it does show a completely different side of Aladdin making the character a little more 3 dimensional I think. The only problem with the series is there is no real indication with a lot of the episodes which order they go in with the exception of a few which makes it a little hard to tell the true character development with Aladdin being nice is some episodes and mean in others.

I think with Aladdin he has had something against Mozenrath from the moment he met him and sadly doesn't seem to mind too much of letting him suffer but would never let him die which is why he offered to save him.

I do imagine for you fic Mozenrath would have a very hard time getting Aladdin to forgive him but saving his life is a good start, it was for Iago after all in regards for Return of Jafar.

I am in no way saying Aladdin is perfect because it is obvious he is far from it but he does have his reasons for hating Mozenrath too (for the most part anyway).

I wish the series would've lasted a few more seasons to give other characters more development particularly some of the villains such as Mozenrath. =3

It'll be nice if Disney decides to release the series on DVD, and in order. Hopefully them going through and taking down episodes on youtube is a sign that they will. But it might just be wishful thinking.
The Citadel must be the first Mozenrath episode, and it's the one where he introduces himself, and Aladdin's rude ever since saying something like, "wait, that monster was yours? Someone could've been hurt!" to which Mozenrath's like, What's the problem here...?
In one of my fics, I thought of Mozenrath not specifically saving Aladdin, but Aladdin kind of changing his mind about how he forgives people, with a little help from Jasmine. That if he doesn't trust Mozenrath enough to let him go free, then Mozenrath can never do anything to show he's changed (...and Jasmine kind of invited him to the palace to help them, since she trusts him, so locking him up wasn't the best thing. But... I suppose Mozenrath's surprisingly understanding of it).
But in the little fic the picture's inspired from, Aladdin and Mozenrath have a similar goal, and Aladdin finds it amusing because there's this magical thing that limits Mozenrath's actions, which Mozenrath finds quite annoying. But after Mozenrath saves him, Aladdin wonders about him. The fic idea ends before anything truly happens, but with kind of a new understanding between them.

no problem I don't mind explaining

about the movement: it's really cool how we see the rocks falling and at the same time the charas standing very still, Mozenrath having just caught Aladdin's arm... I feel it's happening in the blink of an eye and yet it seems suspended in time...

about the colors and atmosphere: they're very close to the universe of the movie and the series, with gorgeous and rich blues and golds and browns... the foggy background adds a nice touch of mystery...

about the emotion: it's all in their eyes, I feel fear in Mozenrath's eyes because Aladdin nearly fell, I see trust (and a bit of surprise) in Aladdin's eyes...

hope this explains a bit

have a great day!!

AsjJohnson In reply to MoonyMina [2014-06-02 16:13:12 +0000 UTC]

thanks. ^_^ That makes sense.
I guess I pictured it being kind of like, Aladdin falls and Mozenrath catches him without thinking about it (like a reflex), and they kind of stare at each other for a second or two while the rocks finish falling. So what you said is similar to that.
I kind of thought the colors seemed a little muted, but I also thought the two of them seemed to stand out compared to the brown bg when I filled that in. So I guess if it worked out good that way, it's good. The foggy background was mainly just me not knowing how to draw the bg and having hardly any time left. But I hoped it would look more like it's supposed to be that way.
I was kind of trying to just make both of them look surprised, Mozenrath kind of shocked that he'd caught Aladdin, and Aladdin being surprised Mozenrath caught him - but trying to draw raised eyebrows on someone with their head tilted back is complicated (and I couldn't really widen Aladdin's eyes because he was already looking up). But seeing some fear in Mozenrath's eyes kind of fits, but not so much because of being worried for Aladdin. There'd probably be a natural kind of "whoa, that was close O_o" feeling for anyone, and Mozenrath would probably be a little confused over why he had caught him (perhaps a small moment of fear at first because of something that had happened before this point). The trust on Aladdin's part is probably mainly from me not knowing how to show surprise for him. Perhaps a little more like a pleading look than truly trusting could be possible, since Aladdin does have to rely on him here, so that's trust in a way. But it's kind'a neat you see what you do in their expressions. And whether or not it could fit with what I was thinking, the idea I had that it's from was a little bit mysterious about what exactly they were thinking anyhow.

heh, yeah. I pictured both of them being surprised at first (though it's hard to draw expressions at Aladdin's angle), and then Mozenrath going ahead and pulling him up, while Aladdin's still surprised. But if/when Aladdin asks him about it, he doesn't say anything, since he's not really sure why he did it, either. That, and he'd rather hide his internal conflict.
It would've been a little more meaningful if I'd gone with the idea of Jasmine on Carpet at the citadel's balcony, holding out her hand and asking for help, and Mozenrath taking her hand. That idea was from a scene of a fic at the moment that Mozenrath makes a decision to be a good guy. But I just didn't feel like that one for some reason.

well I wouldn't say flawless. there's quite a lot of little things I hadn't gotten around to, and some things I rushed too much on. ^_^" But thanks. ^_^
The second movie (between the original and the king of thieves ones) begins the Aladdin TV series, and Mozenrath's one of the main villains in the series (he's in 9 episodes). though... I didn't really remember him from when I used to watch the show on tV years ago. I saw a fanfic about him awhile ago and rewatched the series. He's kind of a spoiled brat, but he's kind'a interesting once you think about things. He's compared to Aladdin and Jafar in the series, and his first appearance introduces him by having him steal a pear from the marketplace and taking a bite before tossing it away (which kind of resembles a little part of the first movie with Aladdin doing something similar with an apple). He has a magic glove and wants to rule all seven deserts, and Iago calls him Jafar Jr. Mozenrath's smart and a fast thinker, and can think of really good plans, but he's horrible thinking on his feet and he sometimes contributes to defeating himself when he panics. In his first appearance, he politely introduces himself to Aladdin and offers to pay him for a little job, but Aladdin's rude to him and refuses. They dislike each other ever since.

Well, at least it's hard to tell besides for the artist themselves. (though, it was good I'd gotten around to giving Mozenrath a shirt, or he would've been a bunch of floating limbs, and that would've been somewhat noticeable)
There used to be a lot of episodes on youtube, but I think Disney went through and deleted most of them. Hopefully that means Disney will release the series soon (and hopefully in order). I know it was aired in HD in other countries, so I'd think they could have it on DVDs. Plus, I've heard that Disney might re-release the first movie next year, so it would be really nice if they did both those things.
