The cub certainly looked like her, but the lion couldn't be sure. It was only when she grinned at him and spoke that he realized who this was. His daughter was the spitting image of her mother. The lioness herself padded from the tall grass and looked up at him with a face full of such love and joy that it brought tears to the lion's eyes. "Sarafina," He murmured, and embraced his wife.

The girl, his daughter, sat staring at the two, a look of utter bewilderment on her face. It was only after a few minutes had passed that the two grown ups broke their embrace, and Sarafina introduced Nala to her father.

When Nala realized who this was, she was so excited all she could do was talk. Just talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. She talked about her friend Simba, and his father Mufasa, who had died only about a month before. She talked about Scar, and the hyenas, some of whom weren't all that bad, but most of them were stinky and ugly.

The more she talked, the sadder she became, and it took her father paying her a compliment to perk her back up. He was a gentle lion, and smiled and purred and later on, that night, cuddled with his daughter and wife under the stars.

The lion was a wanderer at heart, a rogue, and promised that he would visit often.

As he padded away early the next morning, Nala looked up at her mother and asked, "Mum? What's dad's name? You never said."

Sarafina sighed and watched him go. "He has no name, Nala. Many lions like him don't. They don't need them, as their identity is in what they do, and what they've seen. That's part of the reason I fell in love with him. His soul has a kind of wildness in it that ours doesn't."

As her father walked away, he could feel nothing but sorrow and pity for his wife and daughter. To live under such a dark lion was worse than living at all. For a moment he considered challenging the lion, this "Scar," but he shook his head. He would surely beat him, but then there would be the hyenas, and that would make him king. The lion ruled over his own footsteps and spirit and nothing else. Perhaps another lion would return, and be a better king than Scar.

Nala's father returned to visit Sarafina and her many times as she grew up, but after a while, his visits became more and more scarce, and eventually, he stopped coming at all. His soul had turned him in another direction.
