Headcanon time: Starswirl came around much time after Luna became Nightmare Moon and was cast to the moon, but I would like to think he got his hooves on the sisters' diary (the one Twilight was reading in Castle Mane-ia) and somehow managed to work it like Tom Riddle's diary.Β In turn, he was able to communicate with Luna's old self.Β This is when Starswirl is still relatively young, so he doesn't have his full Dumbledore beard yet

Personally I don't think a whole lot of thought went into the timeline...it's weird because if Celestia and Luna are princesses at the time of Hearth's Warming Eve, why didn't they solve the crisis of the three pony types?Β And this was over a thousand years ago (we can assume due to NM's imprisonment) so I rather not think Starswirl was that old for my enjoyment, I prefer something more recent like 600-800 years ago in MLP.Β Hearth's Warming Eve doesn't make a ton of sense in this mindset because Starswirl would have to have his own 'mastery' before he could become a master of Clover, alas, that's where fanwork comes into play.Β Whenever I get this story up and running, I'll have a more coherent timeline in place.

This isn't really a problem because it wasn't expressed just how far they actually traveled or where they actually came from, they could have very well resided on the Equestrian continent in different places yes (although they must have been in relatively close proximity to know the other well enough to argue) and they were later either forgotten or renamed with Equestria's founding.Β

I love Starswirl's design!
Makes me wonder, though. Suppose he wasn't as "good" as most ponies made him out to be, and he was the one to corrupt Luna in the first place via the diary?
