The scene really does convey a very frightening, surreal, claustrphobic sense of terror. It's almost like the visual depiction of a madman trapped in his own mind.
It looks kind of like something you'd see in a Tool video.

Holy cow, that's really intense. I love how all the stone is hacked to pieces, but is still standing and in the original position. That's awesome.
