Description
There's something relaxing about just taking a square canvas and making a basic portrait in it. Helps when it works out of course, but still hah. And why not make Celestia? I often end up making at least a couple Celestia pieces each year. Maybe her sister will show up in the future as well. We'll see.I seem to get in just the right mindset with these, from playing around with the face shape, the ear, and then especially the hair. Not getting locked in trying to make it look close to the show's hairstyle, but at most just taking some general aspects from it.
Then I had to decide how I was actually going to make her hair look like visually in the first place... stumbling across this. Happy accident!
Anyhow, hope y'all enjoy! T'was fun to make this one!
PS: Made on a single layer. I only duplicated it for WIP purposes.
Approx Time: 7,5 hours

Your portraiture style is getting better and better. I have almost nothing to say about her face or the shading, it's too well done. The red blunt on her cheek I find i little bit too agressive, but I get it - subsurface scattering, maybe turn down the opacity a little bit or try to incorporate the color into the base celestia skin color overall, just very mildly. The eye detail is astounding, I have no idea how you managed to get the eye look so "eyeish" without using big reflections. The shade around the corner of her eye seems a little bit off, like you were unsure about the shape of the head there, but that's really nothing. The sharp shade on her neck also feels a bit unnatural and honestly - whether it's the shade thrown by her head or shading of neck muscles, the sharp edge doesn't belong there, I'm pretty sure of that.
The hair look a lot like porcelain, all shiny and sparkling, which gives it nice feeling of detail, but I also wonder, how else could you do it to maintain the feeling yet not make it look like statue or glass... humour me e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title="
(Smile)"/> But the reflections there, provided it is glass, are right on spot, that part you have covered very well. The crown sadly gets little bit lost in the darkness of the background, which is pity (such a beautiful crown...).
Now the background I get, but the "crosshair" pointing directly on top of her horn - was it your intention, or mistake? If intention, then OK, if mistake, well... it just hits me in the eye e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title="
(Big Grin)"/> I know it's supposed to be star, but how it found it's way right on that one spot just leaves me wondering... I mean, what are the odds?
I sure would appreciate more hard lines in your images, but this is your own style and I won't push you to do something you are not comfortable with, I'm just saying you can do it. Those last images look great from afar, but when I fullscreen it, even on my laptop monitor I can see it's very blurry on the edges and the initial feeling of the detail is kinda lost. I know it's caused by working in what, 2 layers? Or something like that, but again - you can do better e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title="

I didn't give much for originality, since it's another one of pony headshots, which you have your gallery stacked with now, but the hair is new, so I give credit there. Overall impact is hard to rate, sure has atmosphere and the hair is stylish, we might see more like that from now on, but for me, the impact isn't really there, not like with the wingless pegasus you painted few weeks back, that's what I imagine under the word impact.
But I give close to full score for Vision and Technique, what could be sayed I sayed, there is not much more for you to learn there, maybe it's time you focused on other aspects of your artwork e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="

This was a good picture to share. I love Celestia. Sadly some asses apparently thought too much for them to digest... I hate idiots..

It's beautiful picture, and as such it's hard to find flaws, but that's what critique is about, helps author get better, helps me too. Dont't get me wrong here pal, I adore all of AM's work, he's great inspiration to all of us, but since honest critique is requested, it's kinda rude to ignore it - and trust me, finding what's wrong with great picture is hard work. I won't reply on anything here again, fighting in comments is inappropriate.

i thought the your critique was rather fair, i understood the gripe about the crown its really dark further down and the hair is distractingly good... BUT there is a fine line between nitpicking and a fair critique, i don't think your supposed to look all that hard to "find" a flaw rather than it just being noticeable straight up tbh i didn't really see anything else you pointed out
(Sorry this is here)

Wow, very mystical looking mane, it really compliments Celestia very well.
Nice job on the background too.

For some reason your comment reminded me of Sweetie Bell in Lesson Zero: "I like her... mane?"
I agree though, it's beautiful work as always.

This...honestly might be my favorite thing from you. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous. I have no idea how you pulled that look off with her mane, but it's crazy. It's like gem or stained glass or something. Actually, I know exactly what it looks like: pulled sugar ! I feel like the shading on the horn could be improved a bit, but otherwise two thumbs up in space.

I love your Celestia.. She seems a little bewildered like AJ was on your previous picture.
Bring it on Celly.. I can take it... and wanna take it too..

This may be my favorite one of these portraits. As they say, the devil is in the details and do you do a lot of them. I love the mane in particular.

The detail looks very nice, but the facial features are way off. :-/
This face is a lot closer to what Rarity would look like in your style.

it's overall good. But it looks too smooth and smudge looking at it close. Like the edges should be more high contrast
