Description
30x45cm PastelThis was a friends rabbit who had a large compound built on his farm for birds and animals which were protected from predators such as foxes.
Unfortunately a human introduced virus killed it. Rabbits are in plague proportions and viruses have been introduced but pet rabbits cannot be immunised against them, which is very sad. Rabbit owners are all very aware that their pet could also be a victim.
Safe from natural predators but not humans

This is so adorable. I've always had a soft spot for rabbits, especially since I used to own some. And then some of them died from illness which is a reason I connect with this piece - and the artist comments so much. It also reminds me of one of my rabbits who used to always hide behind a brickwall from predators.
Anyway, on with the critique! First of all I love the fact that you did all this with pastels, especially with the detail in the rabbit's fur. and I do love the concept. I would imagine though, there would be much more shadow on the rabbit and perhaps it would look more tense, or have an alert look about it.
Also with this piece, it feels like I'm looking down on a split log and finding a rabbit sitting like that oddly sideways. I think this is also to do with the lighting that has thrown me off a bit. I also think that the log can do with some more rough woody texture and detail.
Personally, I guess I would crop the piece more so it emphasises that the hiding place is small and cramped and brings out the rabbit more.
I hope you find this useful

Thankyou very much for taking the time to critique this work. I did this work a few years and it has sold so I cannot make further adjustments.
However you do bring up some valid points. I must have taken this shot with a flash which has highlighted the rabbit, when in reality it would have been in more shadow creating more depth. He was sitting like that. I should have also lost some of the edges into the shadow.
I chose this composition as I didnt want the rabbit smack in the middle. I spent more time on the log, than on the rabbit, it would have been easier to crop it.
This also is a scan of a photo of the pastel painting and it has lost some resolution.
I now have a digital camera and take shots with and without the flash and make a composite between the two. That flash can wash out a lot of things and create unreal shadows. I am learning as I go along.
thanks again, you really made me look, tried to find the photo to compare but without success, too long ago

Eye-catching composition! I like the use of strong darks to frame the bunny! Sorry to hear that this adorable creature had passed on prematurely.
