Description A little system has since the dawn of times been drifting farther and farther away from its parent galaxy. Soon it will be completely desolate...
I made a few galaxies with a simple technique here, and I'm pretty pleased, since they essentially are my first ones. I'm starting to really appreciate the power of light factory, the only plugin I actually use in ps. Made a few pr3t3nd3r-inspired stars, which I think look pretty cool. I've been a little sluggish regarding the star field, might revisit that and improve it later.

(And that flare on the big planet, that's the peeking sun if such a concept would be hard to comprehend).

Original resolution: 9400^2 px.

EDIT: I finally did the improvements I promised in the comment section. Way better star field, better space dust, and updated the planets.
I also thank for giving me my second DD on this picture!

EDIT (2010-12-21): Made som smaller changes.

So beautiful! I never realized that you can make the galaxy nebulas in Apophysis! I always thought its just fractals!

Pretty cool pic mate! The galaxy looks awesome..

However there's lot of empty space in this piece as you can see. Maybe you should add more small stars or nebs to those dark areas?

Yes, I'm going to improve it soon. I'm going to make a more varied star field.

arisechicken117 In reply to astrovista [2009-08-15 20:22:21 +0000 UTC]

well i mean thats what im doing. I'm reading up on how to do these things, and every piece gets better. But I have no idea how you get such crisp detail in your pics. Like the planets are so clear that you can see the features on them. i dont know how to even begin doing that. Do you make your planets custom? like with textures and stuff?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

astrovista In reply to arisechicken117 [2009-08-15 20:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, there are a few photoshop filters that are useful to get in touch with. I usually sharpen all of my images (filter>sharpen>unsharp mask) when I've resized them. Also, when you resize your images, there are different samplign methods to use, such as bilinear, bicubic and so on. There are a few nice techniques to get bump mapping on your planets, such as filter>stylize>emboss (and then set that layer to overlay or the likes).

arisechicken117 In reply to astrovista [2009-08-16 06:40:03 +0000 UTC]

alright thanks for the help man. but I completely dont understand how you get such vivid and realistic nebulae and cosmic dust and what not. It's gorgeous. I mean I know the traditional way of using filter>clouds>difference clouds, but that can only go so far.

astrovista In reply to arisechicken117 [2009-08-16 14:11:17 +0000 UTC]

I never use that filter to make dust, I use cloud images with different blending modes, various textures and sometimes fractals that I've rendered in apophysis.
