how you get the fingers to move so fluently? I've failed so many times at trying to make a working arm, but it just doesnt work! I guess I just need to work on it more... what kinds of material did you use for the fingers?

between the strings drawing the fingers in and the springs pulling them back open it means that they move at the same speed as your own fingers, giving it a very fluent look. Definitely try again. Making these things are always a trail and error process for me, the end product is never the same as what I originally planned, and usually for the better. The fingers are made of wood.

That's gonna help tons! Thanks so much!! Ugh, I'm the same way with my projects, they usually end up looking pretty good in the end, but not what I had in mind. That's why I'm getting into the habit of drawing things out before making them. I'm thinking about using some plastic-base modeling material for the fingers, since I'm painting on them anyways... Great idea with the wood, though! Really captures the whole "steampunk" look! And of course I'm not gonna give up, silly, that's what quitters do!
