Description
I debated a good portion of the time while I was driving down to Florida, whether or not to repost these images in a larger format, and in less of a collage. I didn't want to come off as bragging 'too much,' but I felt like I deserved to pat myself on the back a bit about this particular fox. I wanted all those interested to see my modesty and humility. My sincerity, and not thee, "I'm better then you" clause. Because that's hardly my point. I still have a long way to go in making my animals realistic. And I have no problem being the first to point that out. But I feel it's important to my watchers, and for my own sanity, that I make it known that I try VERY hard to make this medium fullfill MY every expectation. For me to reach the full idea & potential in the craft. Everything I think this art form can be.And here is the beginning to that end. A close representative of what I think this form of leather work can reach. This fox also represents how far I have come. And to serve as a quick explanation to my recent watchers, that plushing a pelt, or getting into this type of art form is not something I take lightly, or for granted. And therefor should NOT be taken lightly. It didn't come as easily to me, as it has to some others. And for a lot of us, we have to work HARD to reach even this far. So, for those giving this art form a go, to not give up trying to do better. To do better then even your own personal best!
This fox, Zero, represents everything I have wanted and looked for in a 'stuffed animal.' I have come so far since I stuffed one of my grandmothers 3 part-falling apart mink stalls. I didn't even know back then, I could ever get whole furs/pelts. I assumed they were not available to the general public. And I didn't KNOW that people still hunted and trapped for a LIVING! So I desperately tried to accomplish making a realistic looking, feeling, faux fur stuffed animal instead. ANY kind of animal. But the faux fur never 'quite did it' for me. I always found fault in the fake fur. It was too 'one surfaced.' (single pile), then later it became too fluffy, or even too nappy, and more recently, too expensive.. It smelled funny as well, or shed too much. It didn't breathe right either. I had come pretty darn close to making realistic faux plush animals, when I finally found sources to buy real pelts from. Then shortly after where to get the forms. I talked to helpful people on dA, spoke to actual seasoned and lcsd'd taxidermists. Read up on facts, got away from the PETA and the ASPCA's "fur is bad" stereo-types, and then read up on taxidermy, preservation, hunting, trapping, laws, humane practices, and on and on about any subject concerning work with furs and leather.
It's been a terrific lesson in animal physiology and anatomy, and working with mediums I would never have encountered with faux fur, or making stuffed animals. ~Although working on faux stuffed animals helped me to be better at working with real furs! So, I re posted these two images in particular to show how close I have come to taking a whole, taxidermy type pelt, and making it into a 'life like' stuffed animal. No, it's not perfect, the proportions are not quite right, or the fur and leather medium will not allow for a more realistic 'shape,' as one would generally get when using a ridged form, but I'm closer to my goal then ever.
Zero (as you can see in the above images and in the description text below) has a more realistic shape. His limbs are not sausages with pads and claws. He's not over stuffed or stretched out, & his head form is proportionate to his size. In addition, I made sure he has shoulders, elbows, and wrists that move and flex in a realistic manner. All of his limbs are independent of one another, and aside from his pelvis, there is no wire running through his body. In addition to his pelvis, he boasts jointed knees and ankles. I have not achieved this by simply inserting wire and strategically bending it, as I used to. Here, I've made him joints! I've done it before in a few other of my animals such as Windseeker, but have finally reached an area of near perfection in my own method. There is no hyper extending, and he's weighted just right through the entire length of his body. You don't have to 'pose' these areas of his legs and when you pick him up, he goes limp like a trusting pet. His legs are stuffed, and weighted, his armature will NOT back out, even over time. And my stitching (in ANY) of my animals, older or recent, is nearly invisible and secure. To date, NO ONE has ever told or complained to me that any parts of any of my mounts has had faults. ((That is except for an ermine. But his issues lie with the species of the animal, and not my work.))
I refer to my new formula of armature as "bone in armature," and I continue to use "containment weighting," that I have further perfected - which are terms I have personally come up with. I didn't use real bone, and I didn't use tape and glue, and copious amounts of clay to make things stay put. I used materials I would have used in faux furred stuffed animals to keep it safe and reliable. And as I've stated before, the wire I use will not break. I also do not use any portions from life size forms to fill in the legs or bodies of my animals, and never have. Because he is also heavily weighted, those holding him find the need to support him more like a living animal, and hold him in more respectful ways without being asked to, because of how he 'feels.' You can see in the top image how it appears like he's peering down at the floor in a quandary, as if to lie back down or get up and go. And here he's only being supported, not held into position and he's proportionally weighted to lay realistically.
I am very proud of my work. And I am greatly distressed with seeing plushes change hands. I don't care who made them, or why they are being rehomed. It just breaks my heart. And I don't want to ever have that happen to me. I try so hard to construct my animals so they will last a VERY long time. It would again, break my heart if I took $ from someone, mailed them a less-then-par 'real stuffed animal,' and then saw or learned that less then a month later it was being sold because I personally FAILED both the pelt and the buyer, and they were upset with me and my work. And when it comes to someone elses beloved pelt, I will do my very best to do what they ask of me, within a reasonable price range, and make sure that their beloved furry is everything they had ever hoped it would be once it was finished. Two policies I stick to: ~ If I fail - it's the worst thing that I can fathom. & "If you can't do the job right the first time, then don't even bother."

Wow! This is so incredibly impressive. I am about to start my very first taxidermy project, a soft mount/plush. Do you have any tutorials or tips on how to achieve a more realistic mount? Do you just use wires and stuffing? This is drop dead gorgeous, I hope I can do my fox justice! Im gathering all the research I can before he arrives You do such incredible work.Β

How do I add you to watch? Would it be possible for you to do pets? I have a pet skunk that, gods willing, will live a long happy life but I wouldn't be opposed to having her forever like this after she passes!

so... is it real fur?Β
the idea of having a plush made out of a dead animal creeps me out but it looks good, very realistic.

You have inspired me to 'raise the bar' on my own plush mounts!Β Yours are really outstanding!Β Also, you're giving people a chance to own a pet that otherwise may not be able to own one.Β And, as lovely as faux stuffed animals can be, they just don't seem to have the 'spirit' of a real animal.Β In fact, you are honoring the spirit of the live animal when you put so much time, effort, and love into their creation.Β I look forward to seeing more of your work.Β Mary

Is the fox in this photo real? Yes indeed, but it is not alive in this photo, but was a animal skin that was artfully made into an piece of taxidermy known as a "soft mount." A soft mount is where you take a mountable animal skin and you traditionally mount it's head, and then fill it's body with poly fill, the same stuff they stuff most pillows with, this way the animal has a sort of realistic look, however it is soft and cuddly, like a stuffed animal.

I found your gallery through this piece, and now I MUST convince both my parents and my girlfriend to let me have a fox mounted by you XD my mother is all "Oh yes, leather is cool, use all the parts of the animal." she said that in a jacket store, but then when she saw Amercian Stuffers on Animal Planet, she was like "Just promise me you'll never do that." ._. so er.... she will probably take it well but still XDD. My darling just needs to get over the stereotypes of furs, I hate what PETA has done with the "Fur on your back is blood on your hands" thing <-<. Seriously... yet most people in that orginization eat. meat. every. day. -.-;. I am a vegetarian, and I am thinking about going vegan, but I still LOVE things like this, I love preserving the animal, and I love natures beauty, I am not against meat, or hunting, I am all for it, but the treatment of the animal needs to be worked on. Traps are already becoming more human, bullets through the head, but the meat industry... the animals SUFFER their WHOLE lives, they are abused, and in many cages most are kept in cramped areas and are bred insanely and pumped with chemicals.... at least wild animals don't have to go through any of that and one bullet and it's over for most of them. Although fur farms get on my nerves sometimes in order for them to get quality pelts the animal must be well fed and in a pretty low-stress environment, you just have to look for the right ones. I am not against ALL hunters, or ALL farms, just the bad ones o3o. Anywho, point being....
I. Must. Commission. You.

I thought he was a live fox at first. Your skill is amazing. I have seen superbly lifelike permanent mounts, but never a movable "plush" that was convincingly lifelike. The way his body and paws drape naturally is remarkable.

Oh my goodness! I'm in love with this <3 Such a creative and amazing design! I love that you took a more natural feel with such a cute little fox. I am glad you found a way to make it more life life and not so "Sausagey" I hate it when soft mounts just look like someone shoved a tube in them -_- When i get my Cherry red fox, or my cross fox i will absolutely be sending them your way Keep up the amazing work!!

AtFirstPlush In reply to oukume [2012-03-29 12:00:34 +0000 UTC]
Thank you soooo very much!! I can't stand the 'sausage' appearance either. I am currently working on one of my own foxes at the moment, trying out some new ideas and materials for the future of my commissions. Very slow going as I don't have much time right now, however, I have once again added a new technique and joint to the jointed leg armature since Zero, and I intend on using it in any new commissions if the commissioner wishes to have it done... I have jointed the 'palm' areas in the feet, so if you were to hold the fox in a standing position, the feet look NORMAL! Flat on the ground, without that not so pretty 90 degree 'L' looking shape to the leg. My hubby doesn't usually get 'wowed' by the work I do, (not because he's rude lol) but when he saw this latest foxs' legs, he said "WOW! Hey, that looks more natural then the traditional l/s mounts I've seen!" So, when he stops to comment, I know I am getting better at my armature process. I hope to have this fox done and posted by next Thursday, although I am pressed for time to get it done, and done well. I have family coming on Good Friday, and I want them to be 'wowed' too when they see THIS particular fox. (it's a red fox btw. ) One of my family members who's coming, my sister, will help me sell some of my plushes where she lives, and help me to get up to 500$ MORE per soft mount, so I am eager to show her this new fox. XD :joy:

OMG, i love you! You are the new trend setter of taxidermy! You may be one of the first people to actually think of the whole jointed/realistic look. many people are good at soft mounts but dear, you truly are special I'm happy to have found your page and your amazing art, and I'm happy that you can give animals that second life, i wound have never guessed that zero wasn't alive and yes i understand the whole husband thing haha my boyfriend is not completely enthusiastic about taxidermy like i am. He doesn't dislike it, in fact he really likes my Female coyote pelt, she's almost as tall as him he is about 6 ft and maybe 2 inches and she is 5 ft and 4 inches. But sadly i cant have anyone soft mount her due to the fact that half her muzzle is missing
But yes when i do get my foxes i will be sending them too you, i believe it's worth the money!!

As far as your yote gal... do you have any pix of her face up/posted? There is a 50% chance that if not at all fixable, her muzzle CAN be parcially replaced - put back whats missing... I have replaced and fixed many pelts, even a few that should 'not' have been mounted. It's totally up to you, but I wanted to put that option out there for you...

Your'e welcome! And yes i do have some pictures i took of the damage, i was originally thinking about uploading them onto here. She also has some good sized holes in her abdomen area, I bought her from Moscow hide and fur for almost 80 dollars with shipping, she is naturally missing part of her right back paw from a natural accident. I knew i had to have her because she was simple beautiful and already had a lot of personality. The muzzle damage photos are on my page if you want to go look at them, And you totally deserve to be told how awesome your work is I am low on money right now so i can't ask you to fix her up or anything, if there is now way to save her face i was going to have her made into a spook by Which would be a soft mount but with the face taken off and replaced with a cast resin skull. You should go look at them on her page if you don't already know her they are cute!

Does the new armature make them easier to cuddle?
Wires make them a bit stiff sometimes, however without the wires they're either too floppy or too sausagey. The legs are hard to pose without the wires and often don't look natural. I think this armature might finally be that perfect medium between cuddly and posable! I'm excited!
π: 0 β©: 1
AtFirstPlush In reply to Burrs-and-Furs [2012-04-04 21:17:57 +0000 UTC]
YES! It does! XD It's as if you have a 'freshly dead' animal, (as terrible as that is to say) instead of an over stuffed sausage with stiff legs or overly floppy legs. (the way I do the stuffing/weighting anyhow) They are much more life like, in feel, appearance, weight, movement, etc.. Providing that the tan is proper. I have worked on 1 fox and two coyotes that became terribly stiff after hydration, despite the 'jointed bone-in' armature that I do, and worked the areas often during dry time to allow the armature to work. It can't always be helped with some tans(getting stiff), and you never really know about it until the pelt starts to dry.
Anyhow my new armature makes them terribly cuddly and far more naturally posable in more pleasing ways 9 outta 10 times. XD
