This is a great picture, and you did a good job on her freckles! It almost looks like a photograph it is so well drawn. I envy you your talent. Keep up the good work!

I feel dumb for asking this but is her hair in charcoal?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AthenaTT In reply to I-Bit-Graf-Orlok [2010-11-26 18:05:49 +0000 UTC]

No, everything here was done with pencil (graphite) Normally I use a mechanical pencil but in this case the hair was done with a regular wood pencil, HB lead.

It's pretty. Although I can't believe you use a mechanical pencil. o_O Are they.. like, the ones you buy at Walmart? Or is there some kind of omg special brand that I apparently don't know about...?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AthenaTT In reply to I-Bit-Graf-Orlok [2010-11-26 18:11:32 +0000 UTC]

I almost always use a mechanical pencil. I have a ton of them, no special brand is needed for the pencil but I do use different leads, mostly HB, 2B and F. Here are two good brands [link] and [link]

That's really cool. How do you get such precise lines, and how can your pictures be so.. white? I mean, don't they get smudged? XD and do you use cameras for them or a commercial scanner?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AthenaTT In reply to I-Bit-Graf-Orlok [2010-11-26 18:54:34 +0000 UTC]

I always cover the art as I'm drawing it with a blank white piece of paper under my hand so the art is seldom smudged. When I'm done I go over the art edges with erasers to make sure all blank areas are as clean as they can be. Then I scan the art with a regular, non-commercial, inexpensive scanner. If I missed any smudges around the art I clean up the scan with photoshop :3

Sounds very complicated. Thanks!

AthenaTT In reply to I-Bit-Graf-Orlok [2010-11-27 01:19:30 +0000 UTC]

LOL it's not complicated; just always be sure to draw with your hand under a piece of paper, erase any bits that aren't where you want them, wahla

Sophillia In reply to ??? [2010-11-04 00:52:31 +0000 UTC]

How is it that you achieved the skin texture? Was it by stippling?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AthenaTT In reply to Sophillia [2010-11-04 02:53:34 +0000 UTC]

No stippling was used. This was drawn with HB and 2B pencil on very rough paper. When I lightly rubbed at the pencil with tissue, that's when the "bumps" of the rough paper are revealed, that's what you're seeing. It's entirely due to the paper, except the freckles, of course, for that I lightly drew tiny circles, then gently rubbed at them with a tortillion and hit them a few times with a kneaded eraser to lift some of the pencil so it would look softer.

Well I must say you did a fantastic job, great likeness to the picture.

AthenaTT In reply to Sophillia [2010-11-04 21:15:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. It's funny, when I use smooth paper and spend a great deal of time with a mechanical pencil, sometimes drawings don't turn out as well as the quick drawings done on rough paper with a wood pencil with thick lead, like this one.

ive always been so curious as to how people get their background to be so white after uploading it. Do you scan ur pics? Cuz mine shine when i tried it. And when I take a picture it doesnt retain the true white background in most of my pics.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AthenaTT In reply to fabriceg [2010-09-16 21:25:23 +0000 UTC]

I scan my art at high resolution (300 dpi) with the color photograph option selected, and then I color correct the scan with Photoshop. I turn the image to greyscale to remove any odd color casts, then I turn it back to RGB (it has to be RGB for the print system here) then I remove all the area round the art by selecting it and filling it with white. Hope that helps!

Talking of freckles ... Know! When I feel proud of my work I visit your gallery. Then I come back to the ground. And you call this sketch....

Awww Thank you! This is just a quick sketch. Sometimes, when I don't mess with them so much, they turn out much better than the ones I spend too much time on!!

This happens to me too. When it takes to finish a painting, I decide to restart taking another path.
