My Irish grandmother always said that freckles were a sign of beauty! Beautiful work!

Oh, I love them, too! Your Irish grandmother was correct!

They are difficult to render and to get the randomness. I've tried it in Illustrator with varying degrees of success.

Yeah, my Irish grandmother was correct about a lot of things in life. I often refer back to her wisdom and thoughts.

Those look great! The only thing I can think of to tell you with freckles is employ your mesh gradient, and they'll look a lot smoother and more natural, if that's the effect you want. Here are some tutorials, in case you're interested [link]

I try to avoid using gradient mesh, I don't like its unpredictable results, but if I was to go back in on either of those, I might use some gaussian blur on the freckles. Thanks for the link, I might find some use for the mesh someday!

When you say unpredictable, do you mean when printing? Yes, blurring the freckles, or putting some kind of feathered blur on them, would probably soften those edges up a bit. OR even if you did it "old school"; large freckle, light color nearly matching face, then smaller freckle on top a bit darker, then repeat until you've got a "faded" freckle. You could then group, copy, paste, and stretch/resize into lots of different freckles

From that picture, its a really good attempt. However I think you need a better photo to work from as the face looks very flat. Find one that is more in focus and has more megapixels so you can see the shape of the freckles more and how they themselves have tone.

Oh, it was just a little quick sketch. Wasn't serious about details. I'm sure you'll see from other works in my gallery that when I get serious, I get serious. But thank you for your input

The freckles work really well! I was surprised to see such confidence in how the hair is drawn on full view - it looks like it has lots of detail on the small view but the large view shows a very simple rendering.

Thanks so much for your kind words This was a simple sketch, I'm so glad that it looks more complicated in smaller view, what a happy accident!

I love how you captured the freckles so well! Especially the shine on her button nose, and the shading on her lips; you are very articulate with detail!
Great work

Ive never drew freckles either, is it hard to draw them?

I was worried but it ended up being really easy! I just made some lighter, some darker, put some in with a pencil, some in with a blending stump, and went back in with a kneaded eraser to pick out even lighter ones and work over the ones I'd drawn. For this sketch and the paper it was on, everything worked out well.

I think it's very clever how you so painstakingly detailed the face and the hair is merely monotone and expressing the contour and not the reflective aspect. It actually gives the piece a nice sort of harmony and style! The freckles are lovely, and I love the expression that she is giving through her eyes! Beautifully rendered piece, especially if it's your first time

Thank you so much! One reason I left the hair "loose" and detailed was, quite frankly, I couldn't see much detail in the reference photo, to me it looked like a dark mass, so I just used a big dark wood pencil and sketched in a suggestion of hair and left it at that! I, too, rather liked the end result; like you said, I think it put more focus on the face. It was so fun to spend time on the face (freckles) instead of the hair for a change! Thanks for your awesome comment, it was very encouraging.

You are most certainly welcome! Ah I see. I know some people whose hair is like that. All the same, I think it went remarkably well and I might try it for some of my projects (a big leap since that's the best thing I draw besides nose...outlines) But anyways, glad you got to focus on the freckles! I hope you do more, I think they're just the cutest thing! Also the end result is fabulous! I wouldn't mind if you did a few more pieces like this, but no matter how you do it they always turn out extremely nice And you're very welcome! I'm so glad I could be an encouragement to you
