Named by: Ralph von Koenigswald, 1935

Species: G. blacki, G. bilaspurensis, G. giganteus
German paleontologist Ralph von Koenigwald first described Gigantopithecus remains in the form of a set of teeth found in a Hong Kong apothecary shop in the 1930's, and the early collection of Gigantopithecus remains took place in such shops throughout China. Eventually the source was traced to a cave in Guangxi in souther China, which has since yielded several teeth and jaws.

Other information: This large forest dwelling ape is the largest of its kind, reaching up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall and weighing up to 600 kilograms (1,320 pounds). It resembled a large orangutan with the body stance of a gorilla. They are also the last animals encountered in story arc 31.

Although it was probably quadrupedal like a gorilla, it still calls to mind the famous giant ape.
