Description
In truth, I actually don't have anything new this week, but I didn't want to notpost anything myth-related while I'm still posting fakemon stuff. I'm in kind of
a myth art-block right now... Anyway.
I was keeping this for a future "Brazilian Folklore Galore part 3", but to not let
the week pass by here it is... Consider it a preview of sorts!
If you haven't seen the Brazilian Folklore Galore part 1 & 2 you can check them right here:
[part1] [part2]
---Kiumba, Spirit of vice------------------------------------------------------------------------
Present in Afro-Brazilians religions, Kiumbas are lower spirits of darkness, who
live in a spiritual plane called "The Umbral" ("The Threshold") and delight in depravity
and vice. Once they find a victim, they "cling" to them and begin to manipulate
their lives, making them become addicted to drinking, smoking, and gamble,
start to commit adultery, become violent and in extreme cases drives them to commit
suicide. These marginal spirits may appear to untrained or corrupt mediums
posing as good spirits or gods, and offering their services for free instead of the
usually required offerings. They excel in cursing the lives of others, and can also
corrupt good wishes asked of them into dark acts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried to emulate a Megaten style for this one, I wanted it much simpler than the
usual design but still distinctive enough. I'm particularly very fond of this one, so
I hope you guys liked it as well.
Kiumba is described here as a "marginal spirit", marginal itself meaning "one who lives
in the margin", of course, but here in Brazil the word is MUCH more commonly used
to refer to criminals and outlaws, specially your everyday petty thief. So I made its skin
to resemble a prisoner outfit, and gave it shackles. You can argue that Kiumba itself is
a prisoner of its own existence and nature. It's also very bestial, it has a wild mouth,
but no face, and also horns, goat feet and a devil tail, making it look more like a
traditional demon.
If most of the figures I drew fitted the role of bosses in a game, Kiumba would be
a very early enemy, and one of the first real threats the player would find in its way,
possessing strong physical attacks and debilitating skills.
Hope you liked it! See you guys next time!

You really succeeded in emulating Megaten style ! I think it's mostly the head, and the fact that he's torn apart

Oh, thanks, glad you think so. I was specifically aiming for that on this one!
...Yup, it's definitely the head. Although to be perfectly frank, this whole design is just one
giant mix of Bilwis + Varuna + Dybbuk now that look at it again... Dunno what to think
about it anymore.

There's a bit of the dismembered horned demon wrapped in bandages which I forgot the name also... But don't worry, that was your purpose to mimic Megaten style Personally, while doing researchs for my Apsu design, I decided to give him attributes of protegated eels (since they live in fresh groundwater), which means a pale skin, axolotl "ears", and no eyes... the result had a Varuna/Abe Sapien vibe regarding the head, but I'll keep this design for inking and coloring

You mean Attis? Well, I wasn't with him in mind while doing this, but well, if even he comes to mind, then I guess the general aesthetic really worked out in the end?
Oh, so you're doing to tackle Apsu next? Awesome! I LOVE his soul hackers design, but at the same time I always wondered what the heck I was looking at exactly. Never heard an answer for that.
Focusing on fresh water and fresh water animals for the design is a good direction to take! Not sure what I would do myself though... He's not described as a dragon as Tiamat is,
but if I designed him I would want for the two of them to look somewhat similar to each other... Maybe just a few draconic elements? Maybe I could keep the DNA-motif on him as well...
Since he isn't described with an appearance anywhere and is just a personification of fresh water, it has occurred to me once to go for something similar to Chaos from the sonic series, a giant anthropomorphic amoeba. Now, how I would manage to make all of this look good design-wise and still fit him, is another story. XDDDDD

While doing some researchs, I found that the things at the tip of Kaneko's Apsu's arms are actually based on Asherah idols I'd like to see what you could do with him
!

HOLY FU** YOU'RE RIGHT!
It's a perfect match ! But... Wait, Apsu doesn't have anything to do with Asherah... What the hell Kaneko?
Maybe it's because since Apsu is also a god of fertility, he wanted to incorporate some symbols of fertility and thought this Asherah idol was a good fit for that? That's... weird, to say the least.
As always, someday, eventually.
I've got more ideas for designs than I got motivation to draw them...
But first things first, gotta finish up this guy !

Yeah, When I saw this idol I was like "...wait a minute...WAIT A MINUTE !" ; the whole fertility logic and the fact that they originated from mesopotamian beliefs, maybe ?
Oooh, silly ol' Ribesal Looking forward to see the final result
!

They are from the same big general region, but well, still different cultures and drastically different time periods as far as I know... Atlus paid more attention to this kind of thing back in the day (still does so, but to a lesser extent it seems), so discovering stuff like this is a bit weird. Apsu is DEFINITELY not the first one with weird out of place stuff like this in his design whoever! Just another one to the list now. Still love him either way.
And well, it's done!

Well, if your mythological creatures were RPG bosses, then your demon birds-Stolas and Halphas, not Gurulu-would probably fight together, with Stolas using supportive magic and Halphas physical attacks or something. Gurulu would probably attack in time with his background music (and if the battle system is turn-based, outside of his turn).
Also, Xenu for super secret impossible to find bonus boss!

I actually do all of them thinking about that! Kiumba here is supposed to be an early game enemy!
They wouldn't fight together because of their different origins, but what I had in mind for then is:
-Stolas: Spams space-themed spells such as Meteor, Black Hole, Supernova, etc, but takes some time to cast them. You can interrupt him by destroying his legs to make him tumble for a short duration.
-Halphas: Uses a nasty gunpowder status effect on the field, making the team who uses any fire-based attack to trigger an explosion and receive massive damage. He uses fire buffs against you by casting it on your teamates, following by casting berserk status on them, triggering even more explosions.
-Gurulu: The idea to make him attack to his tune is very neat! I don't have any ideas about how he would fight (Maybe spawning minor poisonous snakes demons as helpers which he can eat to recover health), but I imagine him being a character that first opposes the team, but them helps them in a unexpected twist to solve a greater problem.
-Xenu: Not many ideas how he would fight either, but I actually imagine him being the final boss in a larger quest revolving around Ufology and random and ridiculous urban legends coming to life, culminating in a alien invasion by Xenu's fleet.
...The Flying Spaghetti Monster gets the bonus boss spot as an ultra-powerful god.
While I do play around with making games a lot, I don't have any major plans to put any of these guys in game form anytime soon... I do have a game project involving them I'm working on at the moment which is going to use some of the designs, but knowing myself I doubt I'll go too far into it. I am currently working on a comic that uses all of these guys as possible characters, and I have a dozen pages or so already done, with my current goal to release it here eventually when I'm satisfied with what I have... Although don't expect any major demon of god appearing in the first chapters.
...I just have to stop being so lazy and organize myself better to make faster progress...

And by that, I mean that this was not the kind of answer I have expected. Now I've tried to think up Vepar, who would be fought in water (floating or underwater?) and use a poison ability to... well... poison the water, which would of course cause constant damage to everyone in the poisoned water... but if you used water magic on him while the water was poisoned, he would be poisoned as well, and then he would expose that gaping hole in him (to let the poison out?) which would be his weak point or something.
And, uh, about that "being lazy" stuff, I , uh, do that too? Along with probably thousands other people?
