Description
----Lucifer----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The demon lord in Judeo-Christian lore, once God's favorite angel, which in an act of rebellion against its creator
took arms with a third of the Heavenly Host to usurp the celestial throne, but was ultimately defeated by his brother
Michael and banished along with his servants to the depths of the abyss. Many reasons are presented for his rebellion,
but all of them agree on his immense pride and contempt, or, according to some sources, envy of mankind. Under the
disguise of a serpent, he invades the garden of Eden and tempts Eve to eat the Fruit of Knowledge, destroying the
innocence of God's children and cursing them to having to die and doing manual labor on their own. He awaits in the
darkness a second chance to fight against God himself, a chance he shall have during the Armageddon. The name "Lucifer"
literally means "Light Bringer", a title used in antiquity to refer to the planet Venus as the "Morning Star" and, in
fact, didn't have any negative connotation back then, being even used as a title to refer to Jesus Christ in the
book of Revelations.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I swear that everything conspired against me... TT__TT
My Fine Line is barely working anymore, the reason why the lineart and symmetry are so badly done... So sorry about that...
And while I am relatively pleased with the design itself, I can't say the same about the coloring.
I ended up using too many colors at once, and bright ones at that... Lucifer looks so....Happy... Not very fitting at all.
But it was this, or having to redo all the coloring and postpone my post until God knows when...So here it is. =__='
The symbology is back after being absent from so many drawings, so here they are! 8D
-The main idea for the design came with the image of a "serpent dressed up in peacock feathers". It is briefly mentioned in
Islamic teachings that Satan invaded the garden of Eden by hiding under peacock feathers, which if you stop to think is also
an interesting metaphor that I wanted to capture: Someone who tries to up an image of majesty, but is just an evil viper on
the inside. Peacocks are also frequently used as symbols of pride, making this even more perfect for Lucifer's design.
-Lucifer holds an apple in his left hand, while also sporting branch-like protrusions from its shoulders, associating him
again with the events in the garden.
-The scepter is a symbol of royalty, very appropriate for someone who fancied himself the king of the heavens. Many Venus symbols
are also present on it as well, representing his association with the "Morning Star". The inverted pentagram and the serpent
are self-explanatory...
-His head was designed to bear a resemblance to a crown, but instead of a face he's just empty inside...
This drawing is actually just the first one of two, this one representing his "Fallen Angel form", while his next one will
represent his "Demon Lord form"...Which shall be made when I have some more time, of course... College starting again next week...
Well, hope you've liked it! If you did (or even hated it XD) try to leave a comment if you please, criticism is welcome!
Until next time!

Já me desculpo prematuramente...
no jardim.

While the design is really unique, I guess I have a bit of an issue with this one because it's so 'monstrous'. Lucifer was described as the most beautiful of angels, and Lucifer and Satan are supposedly two different entities.

There is a bit of confusion here, some other people have brought this up as well. Lemme clear that up...
This design here is after he has already fallen, he's a bonna fide demon king here, but this is his "fake" form.
Most of these designs are for a story project of mine, and in there, Lucifer is prideful demon who refuses to awknowledge that he's now fallen and has lost his beautiful angelic form, so he uses this one to disguise his true demonic nature, which would be his true form, based on the red dragon of Revelations. He tries to look a bit more angelic, but doesn't quite succeeds, does he?
I like to imagine a battle with him in which after being defeated in this form his body cracks like a shell, and he emerges from a cloud of darkness seeping from that dark hole he calls a face.
So all in all he should have three forms, his true original beautiful form, this fake form right here, and his true demon lord form. Satan is indeed considered here a different entity as well (he and Lucifer hate each other), he's the angel of adversity, and I indeed already have a design for him, I just have to go and finish it...
But alas, this design is probably going to be redone in the near future, it's quite dated now, so maybe something better is going to come out in the future? Who knows?
All the angels I've draw have a more traditional humanoid form as well to go with their true more monstruous forms, Lucifer here included, I just haven't drawed them because... I fear people would find them a bit boring? I dunno

Please don't get me wrong, it's still a very original and interesting design. But the 'most beautiful' aspect is one of those things about Lucifer that always stuck with me for some reason. If you do update it, I'll be sure to look forward to it!

Oh no, I didn't. It's just you're not the first one to raise questions about the design.
Well, I don't blame you, it is pretty memorable to hear that what is now considered to be the father of all evil was called the most beautiful of all angels pre-fall! XD
Most of the older stuff on my gallery (and some of my newer ones) are targetted for a redesign/update eventually, some of those look pretty dated by now, so take those with a grain of salt

Very cool ! The eyes on his cape remind me of the ones which are on the wings of the Seraph from the Megami Tensei series

Thanks a bunch!
Oh, how very perceptive of you! Indeed, I based it on Seraph. It's actually one of my favorite demons from the series! It's a simple design, but I like it a lot!
...Now that I look at it again, I even copied the color pattern on the wings with golden/crimsom/purple and green colors.... I'll make a note to myself to differentiate it a bit more
when I end up coming back to update this design...

Oh, you know, I'm actually drawing angels, and I always try to differentiate my versions from the SMT ones, while keeping some elements I like, like the colors of the skin and the wings, since I don't want all my angels to have only white wings and a skin like the one of an ordinary human ^^' But that's the main challenge, to not make a copy of Kaneko's work XD
By the way, I'm currently working on Gabriel, and I should thank you, for your design helped me to conceive my own

Oh, you're doing angels now? Neat! I'll be sure to check them out!
And yeah, I tend to do the same! Although I did lose that challenge a few times now... XD
Since I still haven't drawn any angel in their humanoid form (yet), my inspirations come mainly from Bayonetta I guess, with weird designs and some marble-like armor with golden details on some parts to keep them visually consistent... But I also think I'm going to start scaling them down to more "simple" designs than some of the huge behemoths I've created in the past, Gabriel was much more simple than my later angels.
I'm also going to tackle the main heavenly host eventually as well, with the lesser angels starting as very human-like, and as higher the ranking, the weirder they get!
Oh, I'm glad you liked him!
I'm thinking of revisiting his design and remove some of the "death" aspects, they're such an obscure part of Gabriel's character that it's kinda weird to give it so much focus on his design, it's better to leave all that to Azrael... Not sure what I would do with him though, and some of my friends reacted really poorly to the idea. Lucifer could use some slight update as well, becoming a bit more serpentine, and poor Michael on the other hand.... He really needs some legs.

They're in my gallery, in the "Heaven Quest" folder XD Yeah, speaking of Bayonetta, I was mostly inspired by their designs of halos I guess you were also inspired by the archangels' look in SMT IV ?
I'm planning to do YHVH as well (I'll call him Yehovah in this context, while telling that he is also known as Yahweh, Allah, simply God, Elohim, and...the Monado, the very source of existence in Gnosticism, since I wanted to put Yaldabaoth in the project, as well ^^')
I just finished my Gabriel, and I gave him an angelic scythe, among his other attributes, and I find this makes the final pic look pretty good, but I didn't focus on his role as an angel of death ^^' In which religion is he sometimes considered like that, actually ?
Not sure if I'll do Azrael... I have not yet posted a Lucifer which returned to Heaven and recovered some angelic features while keeping the demonic ones he got when he fell from Heaven, but maybe someday I'll do him as the Light Bearer he was before the rebellion
Your Michael is cool, don't worry ^^ I think he is next in my "list" ! And I think I'll keep the flaming scales around his head, if it looks good with the rest !

I was indeed inspired by the archangels from IV, I do find the idea of portraying angels in their non-humanoid forms a really fascinating one (and my angel's glowing yellow eyes indeed came straight from them!), but... That's as far as my appreciation goes. SMT IV's designs don't match any of the archangels at all, stand out as a sore thumb among the other SMT angels, and the very designer admitted himself in the artbook that he dislikes doing any research so he did whatever he wanted with them... (I mean, what the hell is even up with Michael's design in that? ) So I just took the main idea behind them and tried to do it a little better in my own way.
I'm planning to do YHVH sometime as well, I was even talking about that with someone in the comments some time ago, although I would have to do a bit of research first to really nail a fitting design for him, there's a lot of metaphorical descriptions of him in jewish mysticism, I could make a design out of that ...There's just the problem with someone getting upset with it, which for me is whatever, screw them, but I don't really have much time or patience right now to deal with anyone offended by it... How I would call him is also confusing to me, I mean, since I would also be considering him to be the same as Allah, wouldn't the name Yehovah, which I am also going to use, be inappropriate since it isn't used anywhere in the Islam?... I'm still thinking about that one. I'm definitely going to make Yaldabaoth sometime as well, but I'm not sure yet of what to do with it, apart from using his lion/serpent design and making it mechanical-like.
Oh, I'll be sure to check Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer out when they come!
Not focusing on the death aspects is indeed the best way to do it, it was kinda silly on my part, I did it just because it looked "cooler" than making him a simple messenger angel. About where the death thing came from... I'm not so sure anymore, I do remember that a group of people considered him an angel of death and the holder of the trumpet of judgement (he is the one blowing the trumpet in some versions of the judgement arcana), incorporating elements from Azrael and Israfel since both aren't present in Christianism. It doesn't make much sense either way.
Well, he's fine I guess... It's just... Let's just say they look somehow a bit inconsistent with the actual archangels just like the ones from SMT 4 do, and that bothers me more with each passing day. It's still possible to make them look abstract and bizarre, but still fit their characters a little better.

I think I'm going to put both Raphael and Israfel, even if they're supposed to be one and only archangel in Islam ^^' But when you know that Islam is based on the earlier abrahamic religions, keeping archangels from the previous beliefs, you end up recognizing Allah as YHVH/Elohim, with yet another name...
There really are "official" depictions of YHVH besides the bearded humanoid that we all know ? I was going for something like Eternity from Marvel comics : a humanoid silhouette, but with the universe (and/or Heaven) inside ^^' Like if some guy said "God in Heaven", he could answer "I AM Heaven !"

AtmaFlare In reply to DoctorChevlong [2017-07-20 02:57:58 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it's much better to keep 'em separated. While Michael/Mikhail and Gabriel/Djibril really are basically the same thing, Raphael and Israfel have so many different characteristics from one another that it's really a waste to just mix them both into a single thing.
Yeah, it does make sense to just call it YHVH/Yehovah, but it bothers me anyway for some reason... But screw it, whatever, I know I'll probably just put it as YHVH anyway.
Using Eternity as a reference is a really great idea for a YHVH design! I say go for it, it's not only fitting but it always looks great. I just love space-textured stuff.
Not really a description per se, but you can extract a lot of details and metaphors about God's "appearance" from all sorts of texts across the ages... Just an example, some of my considerations for my design:
-God has a human-like form because man was created in his image.
-God is always sitting on his throne, in fact, only he and Metatron are even allowed to sit in heaven.
-God takes the form of a burning bush in Exodus when talking to moses, so maybe his design could have some plant-like or natural characteristics? Maybe that would be a bit weird though...
-Fire is constantly associated to God's appearance, He takes the form of a pillar of fire in the Exodus, plus some angels like the Seraphim are literally always on fire due to the intensity of his "love".
-He started his days as a lesser god of war before becoming the almighty one we all known and love, plus a lot of mentions are made to his "sword", so maybe he should carry one.
-He has a mysterious shining face that can melt people alive, so maybe something like Eternity's face really would be the ideal thing!
...There are a lot of other details and metaphors to consider, but these are the basic ones I'm going to use as a base for the design for now. There is still stuff like the three keys, God's robe of glory... I could be here all day talking about all that.
