You may consider this piece old by now, but I keep coming back to view it with pleasure. Not many people realise that stoats, long-tailed weasels and least weasels have a third colour form- the spring and autumn moult! That includes all the varieties of brown and cream/white between the classic summer and winter forms. I'm doing a calendar project right now with emphasis on this.
Thank you for portraying a little of this variety in your choice of colouring here. And keep up the work on mustelids and other small animals!!

While at mustelids, would you happen to know about any good fact books on various known- and unknown species of mustelids? Or someone who does? I could always do some research myself, but I thought I could ask you first. I personally wish the back-striped weasel was more known, but I can't blame anyone if it's hard to find and to study. It's the only species of weasel I have problems finding a great reference picture of for a future presentation. There are two of them on the web- an illustration and a photo, both looking different. Maybe I should go with the photo.

wow, thank you!
You're right about the colour moulting, I haven't seen much art depicting that yet (though my desktop picture is one of a long-tailed weasel in autumn moult, lovely photo) And that calendar project sounds awesome, more people need to know about the wonderful animals that are mustelids <3 I'll definitely keep it up!

I wish I knew about mustelid books, all I know comes from various websites in various languages (mainly English and German websites, though I have used Russian sites as well, it's just a lot harder for me ). It depends on which species you need information for, I don't know much about the back-striped weasel (as you said there are hardly any pictures or information) but I know a lot more about the Siberian weasel for example I guess it would be best to use the photo for reference, especially since (old) illustrations often contain flaws. The website I did find that spoke of mustela strigidorsa [link] stated that the fur colour can vary between dark to pale brown, perhaps that could explain the differences between the photo and the drawing? You're working on a presentation of mustelid species? that's great! I've tried to start a project like that a few times, but never finished it...

Han-Wik In reply to Avanii [2010-12-31 22:53:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm really on a roll with the mustelid dedication, with weasels being my current focus. Can't help it, they have always been among my favourite animals of all time, and I feel a need to teach facts and bring a little complexity to the stereotype through my own characters. On top of the two projects I mentioned, I'm doing a comic on Bucktooth the least weasel and a goatee-bearded rabbit-trading stoat named Herbie. I'm working on it by professional standards, and I'm not sure if I'll put it online. If I ever do it, I'll let you know.

Thank you muchly for the article- text descriptions always help a lot where visual detail isn't enough!

If you'd like to do a collab with me on mustelids sometime, such as joining the weasel-presentation project, please tell me. It's just an invitation- I wouldn't want to stress you if you have got enough on your shoulders already. One thing's for sure- I'll include a few characters, and Sibirica is a must draw!!

Avanii In reply to Han-Wik [2011-01-01 21:58:14 +0000 UTC]

I think it's a really good thing that weasels and their relatives get more attention, far too few people really know about them (or one of my great pet peeves: they think they're rodents ). I've seen your characters Bucktooth and Herbie, I think they're adorable <3 and Herbie is such an original character too!

you're welcome! I often stumble upon sites that may prove helpful, even if it means I'll have to translate a language I'm absolutely not fluent in, but I see that as extra helpful: I learn about the animal I was searching for and I practice my language skills! it is often the combination of images and descriptions that work best I think, so I search for both

That collab sounds really great! I'd love to help you with it I don't have that much time though as I'm having my exams this year and I'm trying to get myself a room in a city far from my own as I'm going to go to university there, but I cannot work non-stop of course. This would be a great excuse to take a break now and then to draw my favorite animals! and what you said about Sibirica made me very happy

Han-Wik In reply to Avanii [2011-01-01 22:25:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! Whether people will be interested or not- I have tried my best to portray my characters as the carnivores they are, although Bucktooth is being mocked for resembling a rodent (based on this impression that they are mice or something). He's not behaving like one, by any means.

Text descriptions often highlight anatomy and differences between species that would be very hard to figure out only by looking at photo references, so like you, I like studying both, and make up my own impressions. And languages is something I truly admire. I just haven't got around to teach myself anything besides English...yet.

If you'd like to partake, then would you like me to note you my email address? Or MSN? Whatever you're most comfortable with. And take your time- I'll understand, no matter how long it'll take with eventual art updates. We could talk about what a such presentation should contain. Or....if it's too much, we can just throw together all our characters and have them interact in an educational way.

Avanii In reply to Han-Wik [2011-01-02 15:17:29 +0000 UTC]

I really like the style you draw them in, especially Herbie with his goatee beard! well, weasels may resemble mice a little sometimes with their size and black beady eyes, but I have never seen a long-bodied mouse with fangs like weasels have and their behavior is indeed real different! some people....

yes, that's exactly why I look up information as well. information about fur colouring and rarer colourations are always really helpful. I love languages very much. As I am Dutch I was forced to learn English at school and I have also taken classes in German and French, along with Latin and ancient Greek. Sadly I could not keep all those languages so I chose to keep French and Latin. Because Dutch and German are similar languages I can understand German texts quite well and thanks to French and Latin I am able to understand Spanish and Italian a bit. the Greek alphabet helps me to decode texts written in Russian, as the the two have similar letters. I still need s translator though, I might be able to read a little bit of Russian, I still don't understand what the words mean xD

I think I prefer email: I rarely log on to msn but I check my email on a daily basis what kind of presentation did you have in mind? to draw all mustelid species and add information about their kind? anyway I'd like to help you with it

Really? Well I find that it sets your style and other cartoons (like Disney) apart.
Also you are still able to get the full effect whilst making it semi-realistic
