Description What...what is this???

Ugh. I had an long inner debate whether to put this up or not. I figured I should in case I ever get good at it. I can look back and laugh at myself for being toolish.

I literally wasted my whole afternoon trying to figure this out. This is why coloring scares me...granted it was my first time ever coloring anything digital.

Hair is hard. Must practice. And I must practice shading. And making blood look real.

And I need to buy a mouse. This is like finger painting.

Hey, so after reading some of the most recent chapters of "Hitchups", so some bizarre reason, I really want to actually know *what* Hiccup's scar looks like. So I came to you DA page hoping to find a picture. I *did* find this post-attack pic, but it's not exactly what I was looking for.

Have you ever considered drawing a sketch of his back so that we could have a visual to go with the mental image? One of the things I'm looking forward to hopefully happening in the next few chapters is Hiccup's scar getting revealed, so I really want an image to go along with it.

If this idea peaks your fancy I'd be very, very happy! Thanks!

You know, that's something that will probably most definitely be doodled. It certainly seems like something good to doodle while I'm trapped on the island. I, too, also want his scar to be revealed sooner or later...so you can pretty much count on it happening

Well I like this! I think the angle in which you drew it is fantastic. The face shape and the facial expression are gold!

Colouring is the bane of my existence too, don't you worry.

I got a tablet now...so maybe I'll try it again and have them compared!

I should master the tablet first, lest I butcher something

Hope you like it. But look away if you don't like blood.

This is a good start, I think. I'm with you- I also own a Mac and have to "finger paint" the little digital stuff I do. Being lefthanded, I still am working this with my right hand.

I think the coloring adds a lot to showing the intensity of Hiccup's injuries and pale his complexion would have been from blood loss. I like the darker, dirtier color of the bandages, too, as if they are sweat stained.

Hair is hard to color, I think, no matter the medium.

Good luck with future coloring- I'd love to see the bottom illustration, too

Hahaha, I'm too scared to start coloring dragons! I started with the top one because I thought it would be less to do seeing as it was just a close up of his face. I couldn't even figure out the background right.

Yeah, they were supposed to be dirtied with sweat and stuff. Yay! Though the blood part went to hell. The little isolated bandaged I could make spotted and bleeding through properly, but the back just became a mess.

Hopefully I'll only improve

FjordMustang In reply to AvannaK [2011-01-31 00:54:29 +0000 UTC]

And I am cool with coloring dragons but awkward about coloring humans. I figure, dragons are fantasy creatures so you have all kinds of leeway, but humans there is less margin of error.

You did great. Don't worry about the background. This kind of picture you don't want too detailed a background, since the focus is on his face.

The blood part looks hot and painful to me- so I think it works- by hot I mean the fevery feeling he might be having, even if spite of the shock. And it looks like it has been seeping into the bandages so his caretakers have been adding more layers and direct pressure, but it's a huge, deep wound. I actually wondered how long after the incident this was when Hiccup came to, if he's still bleeding.

Oh, you will improve. I've seen you getting better and better. You're also willing to try new things, and that's the vital matter.

It is weird how opposite our strengths are

Hiccup wakes up pretty fast considering his injuries, but that has a lot to do with the Bond, but he does continue to bleed even a couple weeks into his healing.

It doesn't help that he has a problem with staying still

FjordMustang In reply to AvannaK [2011-01-31 01:42:10 +0000 UTC]

I can relate to that- I am hyperactive as well.

I could see the wound taking time to fully stop bleeding- did they wind up stitching it up? Hiccup's very lucky- I guess the Bond saved him from being paralyzed by that blow. He's still got a long road ahead of him- both him and Toothless who has been hurt as well. But they are in a good place to recover- and I imagine they're both going to be doing a lot of reading and learning even lying flat out in a bed.

AvannaK In reply to FjordMustang [2011-01-31 02:06:43 +0000 UTC]

Yep, Hiccup got stitched. But nerves got damaged as well, so it does take him forever to even sit up. I've been researching medical whatnot for that time period and it seems the Humors were big then, especially with the Greek, which is what his Healer practices. I doubt I'll get too in detail with it, I don't want to take away from the story, but I know I'll get sidetracked with reading up on it

FjordMustang In reply to AvannaK [2011-01-31 02:21:09 +0000 UTC]

I know, I am guilty of that sidetracking reading, too. I am on chapter 5 and way too into Sarmatian relgiion than I should be.

But it's good this is going to be a realistic healing process. I don't like thinking of Hiccup being injured like this, but it's also to expected that this type of injury takes time to heal, considering he should have been killed or- at the best- paralyzed. Even if you have the gift of longer life, you still can get hurt. There is no such as a blank check guaranteeing life will be pain free. Poor fellow took quite a blow. I never even considered the damaged nerves- that would keep him flat out. You are right about the Greek humors theory.

The blood does look real. And I like the atmosphere you created with this light coloring style.

Thanks! Now that I think about it, I did have 'paleness' on my mind with the blood loss and shock. Good to know it created an atmosphere and didn't just look 'washed out'

I think this is good for a first time! The blood looks real for soaking in gauze, shading can be realistic or in comic layers - you have the latter which is fine, it still looks better than a flat straight colored peice with no value. What did you use? You don't have a mouse?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AvannaK In reply to ch4rms [2011-01-30 22:38:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I suppose I gotta start somewhere. I actually took your advice and am using a trial run of adobe elements, so thanks for that

I'm still not quite sure how to manage this layers business; I just kind of winged it. Though I would much prefer to one day work my way up to 'realistic' shading. I kind of relied on what I did with the pencil before hand. I have the horrible combination of impatience and senselessness, in that I'll rather spend forever doing things trial and error than sitting through a tutorial.

As I said, I just have a mac, which means I only have the little finger pad to move with. I haven't needed a mouse for years :<

My family will at least get me that for my birthday

ch4rms In reply to AvannaK [2011-01-30 22:46:19 +0000 UTC]

OH! Sorry I assumed you had a desktop Mac since that is what I use, ignorant of me Of course! laptop coloring yikes!

Layers are helpful because you can color skin on one, add another and do hair so if you make a mistake, then the problem is isolated on that one layer and you don't go erasing or applying filters to everything visible.

I have a lot of impatience too, and usually I skim through and find their secrets and apply them without following the tutorial directly

AvannaK In reply to ch4rms [2011-01-30 22:58:25 +0000 UTC]

Haha, nope. Just me and my laptop. Its like my teddy bear; I hug it to my chest and take it everywhere with me. I mean, what if I'm suddenly inspired and I need to write something down?!
It's a problem that I'll someday have to ween myself of.

I'll be sure to figure out that layers business on whatever next project I start...without following the complete tutorial. It sounds vital
