Description
Hiccup takes another step towards his dream of becoming a dragon by discovering how to enjoy the effects of Dragon Nip.So after Old Pic I realized I had another pic along the same vein. Dragon Nip is fun for Dragons dry, but also fun for humans when smoked.
Come on; I can totally see Hiccup smoking a pipe when he's older. Smoking wasn't bad for you then. It was just seen as something people did.

Using puff paint underneath pottery paint can create a unique texture that will add beauty and charm to any pottery project. Once the pottery has been fired, the design you painted will appear raised. This application is easy to achieve and should be done before painting and firing your pottery.

Wonderful poses for both of them here...totally spaced out! Hiccup's pipe hand is priceless.
Gotta say, your imagination spins off to some really neat places.

I tell ya man, I used to have to fight people about the likelihood of Hiccup smoking (far different than today) and now they're all into the nip.
Thanks very much!

Indeed. Just two buddies getting high together.
Something I love about your works is their dynamic quality. Their is a story behind each thing you put out, even the quick sketches.
And Toothless is adorable. Unholy Offspring of Lightning and Death Itself indeed.

The first thing I thought about when I saw this was That 70's show lol.
Though after reading a reply I'm not sure if it would affect Hiccup like that if it's more like tobacco. I can see him doing this, especially in the movie canon, where running the village and introducing dragons to Berk has to have it's stress factors ( to say nothing of a wife who might or might not be Astrid)
Also the old picture cracked me up, all I could think about was an episode where Hiccup did that and had to deal with Berk acting crazier than usual and trying to get through the day ( on top of it it'd be Hiccup's fault lol)
At any rate, great pick as always

I don't actually think it's much like tobacco. I CAN see Hiccup smoking tobacco as it was in ye-olde-days, but I think dragon nip will be more… ah, recreational.

I dunno...I can just see Hiccup lighting it up for the first time and then inhaling and then gagging and coughing for like five minuets before he finally just dry-heaves and vows to never smoke again. ; )
I'm pretty sure Hiccup would be smart enough to associate anything that causes your lungs to feel like they're burning as being unhealthy.

I have to agree with you, Tasermon. I feel like Hiccup would take one or two pulls on that, possibly throw up or something, and decide never to put himself through that agony ever again.
On the other hand, I can definitely imagine Daddy Hiccup with a pipe. XD

AvannaK In reply to TasermonsPartner [2013-08-10 19:40:49 +0000 UTC]
Well.. the thing is, it isn't bad for you. Not any more than eating a full red-meat diet as httyd vikings do (though Hiccup does pick at his meat). What people put in cigarettes now is bad, of course. But someone alluded Hiccup to Gandalf and Bilbo, which I feel is much more accurate. It's not a matter of being 'smart' or not; it's culture.
I can picture Hiccup seeing Gobber and older Vikings he likes/admires and smoking and learning from them. He'll try it, yeah he'll cough, but it's not an overwhelming sense of 'this is bad for you!' you get. He'll feel the calming effects of the tobacco (or dragon nip, in this case). He'll find he's able to focus better on his projects… it'll become a habit and a tool for him. I actually see him more likely smoking as he works in the shop when he's older. Getting away from the kids, from the wife, from his job, for an hour or two, sitting down with a pipe and designing the next project.
Remember, smoking today isn't like smoking a pipe back then.

In reply to your comment, I wanted to note that smoking back then certainly wasn't as bad for you as it is modern day.
The thing that changed? We started smashing the atom, and use that technology. Tobacco plants will pull radioactive elements from their surroundings, and with the increased amounts of radiation in our environment, they fix more radioactive elements within the plant. Those elements stay there through the drying process, and when smoked, settle in the smoker's lungs.
Most of the radioactive elements it pulls in are relatively low-danger Beta-emitters. Normally, the skin will stop incoming Beta particles. However, the membranes in the lungs are not thick enough to stop a Beta particle, and they pass into the bloodstream, where they react with a water molecule to form Hydrogen Peroxide, which then goes whereever it pleases and damages whatever it feels like. If "whatever it feels like" is one of the genes in a cell that regulate cell reproduction speed, it causes cancer.
(Looks at the above and notes that I have been hanging out around world-class Nuclear Physicists WAY too much.)

Yes, thank you (and sorry for the late reply). I think kids growing up with the 'smoking is bad and stupid' kind of makes them ignorant in a sense too. I mean, just look at Gandalf! He wasn't an idiot…

Oh thanks! Yeah, a lot of modern stigmas kind of cloud our judgement in how we see, or want to see. the vikings behave. Hiccup smoking a pipe when he's older isn't shocking or rebellious at all.
