Description The only thing Astrid found more unsettling than finding Hiccup on a secluded beach, soaking wet and staring off against another dragon rider, was his conduct.

An hour earlier she had caught sight of him flying off after storming from his father’s home—a common enough occurrence.  Hiccup was often more willing to open up after a good fly, so Astrid had given them an hour’s period to cool off before she and Stormfly tracked them down.   Usually she’d find them on some abandoned outcrop or seated in the branches of a high tree.  They’d talk, tease, fight, kiss, and go home.

This time was different.

Hiccup offered no acknowledgement of Astrid’s arrival, not even when she dismounted in a jingle of metal and leather loud enough to disturb the thick tension strung between he and the stranger.  His fixation on the woman across from him remained undisturbed; he stood with empty hands, parted lips, and naked disbelief raked across his face.

The hair on her arms prickled.  Astrid did not dare step away from her Nadder’s side, choosing instead to keep a hand closed on the packed axe and observe the stranger from afar (who had spared Astrid a look when Stormfly first landed and nothing more; it was more than Hiccup gave her anyway).

The woman was tall and able-bodied, with bared teeth and poised spear.  The unknown, grisly dragon at her side looked every bit as aggressive and feral as its rider.

Where Hiccup appeared to have lost all self-awareness, she was ready for attack.

“Hiccup?” Astrid asked after the tense silence drew on. “Who’s this?”

Hiccup remained silent—still staring, barely breathing—as though he hadn’t heard her.  His hands trembled.

Once more, it was the stranger who gave her response.  The woman’s grip first loosened from her spear.  Her spine straightened and her stance dropped.  All of her aggression dissipated and Astrid could see—even through the distance—how her eyes grew impossibly wide, trailing over Hiccup’s from.

“Hiccup?” the stranger repeated.  She had the gruff, tight voice of a throat rarely used, but somehow still managed to portray something aghast.

Hiccup jolted—perhaps from hearing his name carried in her voice.  The appall was thrown from his features and overridden by a sudden, hard scowl.

Astrid watched a deep, thunderous energy overtake Hiccup, frightening in its potency.  His chest swelled, his fingers curled, his cheeks flexed over a tight jaw.

“Hic—,” her voice caught halfway through the name.  She saw the dark turn of his brow and the unfamiliar rage that lit his eyes.

Astrid tried, instead, to step toward him and in a flurry of movement Hiccup was suddenly on Toothless.  The Night Fury was ready for it—ready before anyone else could have predicted, as though he knew exactly what Hiccup needed.  They were off.

Astrid swore and followed.  She had a leg over Stormfly before she even thought to spare the stranger a thought.  The woman hadn’t moved—rooted in the sand and staring after Hiccup with a hand fisted over her breast.

Astrid faced no indecision in leaving her behind—that would come later.  Answers would come later.  Right now Hiccup scared her.  The venomous rage she had never seen in him before scared her. She felt scared for him.

She pushed Stormfly to keep up.

“Hiccup!” she cried at his back. “Hiccup, wait!  Who was that?”

The wind drowned her voice; cold and salt seared her throat.  Even if he had heard her, she doubt he’d answer.  She tried to level out with him but he and Toothless did that thing where they become a unified, supernatural force of flight, and Astrid got an abrupt, hard reminder of why the racing games didn’t appeal to Hiccup.  He said he had other things he wanted to do, but the truth was in his rapidly diminishing form. There was no challenge—Not when it came to speed.

Fortunately, his designation was clear. Astrid followed him all the way back to Berk, barely managing to keep him in sight.

She saw him dismount from Toothless on the hill of his home.

“Hiccup!” she screamed loudly as she skyrocketed towards the Night Fury, hoping to stall him.

Astrid landed as he passed.

“Hiccup!” she snapped again, throwing herself from Stormfly. She’d honestly never seen him like this—rigid and angry.  Furious.

He continued to ignore her which, in any other circumstance, would have left Astrid livid, but something was wrong.  Nothing was getting through to him.

He blazed a warpath up the steps and kicked open the door to his home. It swung open with a bang. From inside she heard Stoick’s muffled cry of shock.

Scandalized, Astrid scrambled to follow.

Hiccup never stopped, he strode forward with such purpose that Stoick barely had the time to lower his mug of evening mead before Hiccup thrust his palm into the man’s chest.

Astrid remained in the doorway, riveted in horror.  Hiccup had just attacked their chief.

Stoick looked equally appalled. “Son—”

“You said she was dead!” Hiccup snarled. He jabbed his finger into his father’s chest again and Stoick, a man twice Hiccup’s size, staggered back.

“You said,” Hiccup gasped, as though the fervor quickly drained from him, “she—was—dead!”

He shoved Stoick one last time and stepped back.  Astrid couldn’t see Hiccup’s expression—just the shake of his shoulders from ragged breaths—but she imagined it mirrored the pinched, heartbroken look of the chief.

“Son,” Stoick said again, but this time his voice sounded defeated, his face aged. “I don’t—I didn’t think—”

“Don’t lie to me!” Hiccup shouted over him, raw with grief.  He lifted a shaking fist to his mouth.  “I can’t believe—after all these years—“

“Hiccup, please,” Stoick begged in a quiet, wretched whisper.

But Hiccup couldn’t stop. He paced the floor in short, jittery steps.  His voice thick and shaking as he pushed on.

“And you let me…you let me think that she was…she was…”

Stoick wet his lips, brow high, “Son, you have to understand—”

He took one step forward, one movement, and Astrid immediately knew it as a mistake.

Hiccup bolted.

Astrid stepped aside.

She could have stopped him—Thor knew she had the strength—but Hiccup was in far too much pain to corner.  He hated being cornered; she knew that, if nothing else, of him.

So she ran a hand down his back as he passed.  She saw his throat bob and swore he caught her eye in gratitude, but the sun had already started to set and the long shadows made it impossible to tell.

He moved towards the forest, Toothless at his side in an instant with his unwavering support.  Astrid looked back into the household, realizing her hands ached with the strength she clutched the door frame.

“Chief,” she started delicately, “I’ll—”

“Yeah,” Stoick whispered to the contents of his cup. “Go.”

Astrid paused long enough to see Stoick settle heavily into his armchair and cast a blank stare into the beating hearth.  Then she turned to seek out her boyfriend for the second time that day.
She knew where he’d be, she knew he’d be alone this time, and she knew, finally, the identity of the stranger on the beach.

Wonderfully written.

I would beg you to continue this, but somehow, I get the feeling it was meant to be more of a one-shot, especially with the movie so near (but /please/, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!)

I'm very conflicted about Val being in the next movie, but I'm reserving judgement until I see how they handle her. her not being there for Hiccup was one of the things that defined and shape him as a personality in the first film, and I was sure that they wouldn't cross that line of her being away on a Viking quest or something (even though they never explicitly stated she was dead, it was /heavily/ implied).

When the rumors first came up that the dragon equivalent of a "crazy cat woman" named Val would show in the next movie, I thought it was coincidence, or that she may end up being Stoick's new love interest, but that this woman wasn't the same as Hiccup's mom. But now, I'm pretty sure that they're going with the whole "lost" mother theme.

What really potentially annoys me about this is that she apparently was training dragons long before Hiccup discovered Toothless. This kinda covers a no-no for me, since it implies that Hiccup's views of being compassionate to his enemies and being the first Viking to make friends with dragons means less than it did before, and implies that the personality traits that allowed him to do it were more inherited, rather than coming about independently from his own experiences.

Plus, the loss of his mom, along with his leg, help make the story more "real" in that the hero suffers tragedy throughout his life, but is still able to overcome it and doesn't let it get him down. Now, it may turn in the direction of a "campy" cartoon where the good guys never die, and neither do the bad guys, as long as they look remotely human. I mean, I know it's that way in the animated series (with even the bad dragon surviving), but I expected a bit more of the movie.

But again, I guess I just wait to see how they handle it all.

Sorry, I ramble.

But anyway, really great writing, as always! Very detailed, emotional, and what I would think of as in-character!

Oooh, goodness, thank you!  Yes, I had only intended for it to be a one-shot. I got a few "haddock-family" driven drabbles on my tumblr, but I was so excited about the new Valka-picture I wanted to share this one here.

I too have reserved judgement about Valka, but mostly in how they would play out both her absense and participation.  I didn't mind the idea of her being alive. Not only did it give me great material to work with for dramatic family drabbles and come to my own fun conclusions as I wait for the movie, I also didn't find the idea of her being alive to be far-fethed either.

I always found it suspicious that they intentionally avoided not only saying "death" about Val, but also anything thing that would cement her death. No mention of graves or anniversaries… she was just absent.  Also, with her alive and active in the book, but also absent, I felt this was a great little book-nod for the movies to pull.

Also, I don't think it cheapens Hiccup's progress at all! It doesn't mean anything less. If anything, I'm more amazed by it!  Hiccup grew up being told to kill dragons--he was a child and raised to only know dragons as dangerous, enemies, and to be killed on sight.  And as a child Hiccup made the decision to free Toothless.  He threw away safety, law, rearing, viking values… all of it, and as a kid.  That's something Valka didn't do. She left well into adulthood, with more reason and worldly experience under her belt.

This is pure nature vs. nurture.

Hiccup is compassionate and empathetic… but not only towards dragons, but humans as well.  He's the balance Valka never managed--his parents are both extremists on either end, and he's in the middle.

Hiccup stayed, he chose to find a way for humans and dragons to live harmoniously which is something no one, certainly not Valka, had managed to do.  She had written humans off as hopeless and abandoned them for dragons. Hiccup stayed and united two previously warring species. He actually stopped a war.  Hiccup wins all the awards.

Besides… Hiccup isn't unusually compassionate--having a super compassionate mother wouldn't ruin that.  Tons of Vikings probably are and don't act on it simply because it's culturally unacceptable.  Hell, once again, Hiccup's attempts to keep the peace between two sides of an old war is what makes him a unique leader for his time.

(It's already basically confirmed that Hiccup's a pacifist and neither of his parents are)

Sorry, this got super long, I just get really into trying to alleviate doubts.

Finally, there's no WAY Valka being around is going to lead into campy, family good times--I actually found it bold and refreshing! Bringing back an abandoned mother means pain and drama. It's not bringing a character back from the dead (for the far above reasons) and it's not going to be a smooth transition (or maybe not even a permanent one?(. They don't have a problem with doing the nitty gritty character interactions.

Er… don't read if you don't want to be spoiled but they definitely don't have a problem with offing a character

I have complete faith in Dreamworks, and having that faith, and having the little information I do, just feeds me lots of great, great ways for it all to play out.

Thanks for the pic of Valka!

I dunno, I always that the "breastplate/helmet", even though it was more of joke, kinda "cemented" her death.  Plus, since they never mentioned the cause of her death, and since Vikings often burned their dead, I figured that might be a good reason for a lack of grave/body.  And I figured they didn't want to get too explicit with a mother's death in animated movie targeting a young demographic (though that seemed to fly out the window with Dreamworks' movie about that caveman family).

I'm still not sure that she intentionally left them either.  For now, I'm kinda leaning somewhat towards "memory loss" or "amnesia", as soap-opera-y as that may that seem.  I just can't really see her purposefully abandoning a young Hiccup like that.  That would be like a mother dragon abandoning a hatchiling, evcen if it's father was still around, and (I would hope) Val would know better.

Although, if she /did/ purposefully leave, it would kinda fit in with the theme of Hiccup's wanderlust and he could see the potential consequences, both good and bad, of it.

Guess we'll wait and see.

Oh, but if any of your Haddock family drabbles are recent additions, could you maybe post them here?  Or at least link them either here or post 'em over at Sticks and Stones forum?  I'd love to read them!

I do feel sorry for Valka, but she does deserve a bit of chewing out. She's like the mom in The Curious Incident of the Dog at Nighttime, though I won't spoil the book about that.

I don't think that motherhood "defines" a woman, but I'd like to think that a mother who has a child makes an effort in the beginning. Granted, one could argue that Val was in a rebound relationship with Stoick after Humongous the Hotshot "died," and thus wasn't thinking through the consequences of her actions. She also had her quest to think of, her quest to save the dragons.

What irks me about Valka isn't that she's an absentee mom. Hiccup and Stoick did seem to think that she was dead, and I'm going to believe that Stoick believed she was really dead. What irks me is that she sees her son for the first time in maybe twenty years and nearly kills Toothless while kidnapping Hiccup, leaving him to the mercy of underwater dragons and apparently she does this for every dragon that she "rescues". Yes, run away from your responsibility and freely snatch people off their dragons because you don't believe in that bond!

I know that book!!! I had to do art for it for a school project! It's been a while, but I would have to disagree--I don't think Valka's like that mom at all.  She's on a whole other level in badass, for one thing.

And who's to say Val didn't make an effort? She was clearly with Hiccup for a portion of his life, he remembers her, after all.  Really, we don't know anything about their circumstances yet.

Also, and this is an issue I've take up before, there is no way Valka knows it's her son.  Or very unlikely.  He is an adult.  Now a son recognizing his mother after a long time separated? That makes perfect sense--adults don't change as much.  But kids? They make insane transformations.

Maybe that bond between humans and dragons isn't worth what it may ultimately lead for dragons?  Like I've written in fics before (though stemming from Hiccup's concern), maybe dragons will be used more often for warfare, as a tool of humans. It is, after all human nature to put things at our disposal. And I can see Valka finding it a despicable pattern, and choosing to wholly side on the dragons. Doing everything in her power for their good, not for the good of mankind.  I find it nicely diverse from the characters we've seen so far in HTTYD.

I agree and sympathize with that point of view. Humans have a pretty shameful track record with other creatures (even in modern times), and Valka has only seen the worst side of human interactions with dragons. Hiccup will have a tough slog convincing her that dragons are equal to humans in Berk, partly because... well, they aren't. Even though Berk no longer kills dragons, they are still valued more for their utility than for companionship, except by Hiccup and a select few others. Valka probably has visions of dragons being treated like livestock or domestic pets; their reproduction and every aspect of their existence controlled by humans. Obviously, that's not something that Hiccup wants to see happen either, but I think it will take something bigger than him alone to convince Valka that dragons and humans should be together. The only thing that might help is for her to witness the dragons taking ownership of their own destiny.

On the other hand, I've heard a few rumours about the ending of the trilogy that suggest Valka may have been right all along...

Val is. This drabble just reminded me of the novel, of that particular twist regarding the mother.

She did seem to make an effort at the beginning, but then she stopped coming home for years on end. when her quest proved fruitless Even the books reflect that, with her being around when Hiccup wakes up from his coma in book one. Then we only saw her in the epilogue of book five, AFTER the battle, once again. We do know that she's clever, and as articulate as her son.

Whoops, I forgot to add that the other thing is that Valka had graduated into randomly kidnapping people off their dragons. Even if she had done it to a villain on a Nadder or Astrid, for example it wouldn't matter to Valka if her captive was a nice Berk Hooligan or an Outcast. That it's Hiccup is just even worse, but you're right; there was no way she would have known.

That is a fair point. Valka is supposed to represent the extreme that Hiccup could become. I'd imagine that she'd believe that she knows that the dragons want, even if the dragons crave companionship.

This is heartbreaking TT^TT I feel for Hiccup and Stoick. They are both deeply hurt, and don't know how to deal with it.

I'm not as sympathetic towards Valka. I know the repercussions of what happens when a woman chooses to put her own needs before that of her children (My sister walked out on my niece for the first four years of her life.) I don't care if her reasons were sound or just, when you're a mother your children are ALWAYS first no matter what. There is nothing more that I hate more in this world than selfish parents.

Sorry about the rant. I loved your story though, it was lovely.

AvannaK In reply to kyuuley [2013-12-16 00:32:46 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you liked the story! Thank you!

See… I'm a bit different.  I do understand the responsibility you undertake when you bring a child into this world, but I just hate 'mother' as a defining quality for a woman.

Not everyone is meant to be a parent--some realize it early on as they try to raise children, others stumble along and end up messing their kids up beyond belief because they couldn't let go when they should have.  Seriously, there's was a lot of people who have children who simply shouldn't.  I think Valka never wanted to be a mother, but society pushed it on her (which pretty much still happens today).  Being a mother is not in her nature.  She had a higher purpose, and higher ambitions. She only has one life to live, and she wanted to spend it rescuing dragons. Just because she's not around, doesn't mean she doesn't love Hiccup.  It just wasn't a part of --in fact, it may have even been damaging for her to do it.

Parenthood is portrayed as a milestone that people should strive for, like it's the one thing everyone should achieve in their lifetime, when really, less people should.  Only those who truly want to be parents should try and raise children--children that aren't even theirs.  That's the true marker of being ready to rear a child.

So the position Valka put Stoick and Hiccup in is painful, and sad, and hard, but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve sympathy, or that it was entirely unjust of her.  Both parties were wronged in their own way, both had to suffer. Perhaps Stoick pushed the marriage and family ahead, headless to Valka's personal dreams because he had a duty to the village, and Valka made the very painful decision to pull herself away from a poisonous situation and make a difference in the world while she was still alive.

Sorry--I know you have a personal bias against mothers who leave their children, but it's also a situation I feel strongly about as well

I understand your reasons. Some people really SHOULDN'T be parents (especially those that only do so to get free well-fare). But I still don't like the scenario in general.

I agree that Valka isn't all to blame. I'm sure that Stoick, being chief and a strong upholder on traditions, pushed her to conform when they both could have tried to compromise.

I guess that my heart mainly goes out to Hiccup. He's a kid stuck between two parents doing what they think is best. And in the end he's dragged along their messes. Yeah, he's nearly an adult now, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't hurt any less.

Yeah, poor Hiccup. I think by now he's kinda hardened himself to his mother's absence--but that's going with my headcanon that Valka was like her HTTYD-books self, where she was absent all the time anyway questing (and Hiccup starts to resent her a bit as he ages. He might disagree with his father a lot, but his dad was at least around to raise him)

Stoick might not understand Hiccup all the time, but he's a good Dad regardless. (I think that he might have been the only one ready to be a parent, though, that doesn't mean he was ready for Hiccup )
